Links to Historic Volumes of Lloyd's Register of Shipping

Titles and publication dates have varied over the course of many years. The most reliable way to locate a particular edition using Google Books seems to be to search on "lloyd's register" "for xxxx", where xxxx is the year. This will usually lead you either to the title page, such as "The New Register Book of Shipping for 1809", or to a page listing the abbreviations and codes, "Key to the Register-Book for 1806". In some years, the publication date was prior to the beginning of the indicated year.

Google and other content providers use OCR technology to index the books. In many cases, the typography and the quality of the printing for Lloyd's Register was of poor quality, so the indexes may not work. It is best not to rely on the indexes. While the arrangement is more or less alphabetical by the name of the ship, there may be additional sections, supplements, etc. at the end of the book. Search as many years as possible, in as many different ways as possible, and use the information retrieved to search for more information. For example, when you find the desired ship in one year but not in the next, you may be able to search on the name of the Master and possible locate the listing for the ship in another year. Note that the names of the ports are usually abbreviated, but the abbreviations may not be the same from year to year or even from page to page.
