Baptisms, Parish of Bière, 1717

The parish includes the villages of Bière, Ballens, Mollens, Berolle, and several smaller settlements. The minister Grivel evidently performed baptisms in each village, and recorded the location in the margin of each entry.

Notes

The infants were named after one or more of the godparents, a common practice. Women in these records appear under their maiden names (even Susanne Mayor, wife of Jean Samuel Mayor - they were distant cousins). Jean Samuel Mayor was part of the parish consistory, one of whose functions was to settle questions of church law and discipline. He was also a physician and probably a notary.

There are several common abbreviations used here. "St. Bapt:" stands for Saint Baptême, or Holy Baptism. "Sr." is evidently Sieur, but honorifics are used without a lot of precision in this parish, so I translated it simply as Mr. "pntée" and similar forms are extremely common, note the stroke over the word, indicating that it is an abbreviation. In the second line, note also the line over the "n" in "Jeane", indicating that the "n" is to be doubled.
