Famous, after a fashion, as the least-mourned individual ever buried in the parish of St. Mary's, Islington. His life was the subject of a biography by W. Chamberlain, The life of Mr. Thomas Cooke, late of Pentonville (a miser), London: Law and
Gilbert, 1813), which ran to at least three editions and included an engraved portrait. According to Chamberlain, Cooke began his career as a porter in Norwich, but found his way to London, where he became an excise inspector at the paper mill in
Tottenham. Upon the death of the proprietor, whom we know to be Israel Johannot, he blackmailed his way into marriage with the widow, by informing her that he would report fraudulent practices at the mill unless she agreed to his proposal. He was
known as "Cabbage Cooke", because of the time he spent tending the cabbage patch he established at his home in White Lion Street, Pentonville, where formerly there had been a flower garden. He roamed the streets at night equipped with a bucket and
trowel, gathering horse manure for his cabbages, and was also known to squat over them when the supply of horse manure proved insufficient. Shortly before his death, he tried to bargain with Mr. Bodkin, the undertaker, for an especially cheap coffin.
His funeral was attended by women of the neighborhood who threw rotten cabbage stalks in his grave, so that he would have some to take with him to the other world. His estate was estimated at £ 127,250, including bequests to a wide variety of
charities, including £ 50 to the Humane Society, which was devoted to the "resuscitation of persons apparently drowned."
He was cited as the owner of the paper mill in 1757 and 1761 (insurance records), and it is known the mill was rented in 1770 to Edward Wyburd, who converted it to a corn mill. The mill burned in 1788.
