His marriage contract was recorded by Petrus Chuard, notary at Payerne (ACV Dp 16/1, fol. 22 ), Nycodus filius Petri Brunet alias Chagneyz de Montet, and Johannes dou Mont alias Joly (later called simply Johannes Joly) de Cugiaco nomine et pro parte Glaudie eius filie, 02 sep 1515, with release by bride.

Daughter of Johann Brunner of the Gr. Rats 1553, and of Barbara Tillmann. Is this the same Johann Brunner who appears to have married Maria Gachet? Maria, wife of Johann Brunner of Bern, the architect, is identified as the sister of Niklaus Gatschet on the occasion of his wedding in 1559, but Catharina must certainly have been born well after that date.

Captain in the war of Cappel, 1531, councillor of Bern, and overseer of buildings 1564-1570. The Brunner family were citizens of Bern as early as 1524. After the death of Johann Brunner, Niklaus Gatschet moved his family into Brunner's house. He may have been the son of Hans Brunner, one of the donors for the "Totentanz" of Niklaus Manuel (1516), and thus the model for the figure of the Burger in that famous fresco. (The identification of the figures and donors of the Totentanz is based on the research of the coats of arms in each panel by Adolph Fluri, "Niklaus Manuels Totentanz in Bild und Wort, Neues Berner Taschenbuch, 1901, 119-266.)

He served in the same unit as his brother Thomas in the Civil War, Co. H, 21st Missouri Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted as a Corporal, age 35, married, occupation grocer, 6' 1" tall, with light hair and blue eyes, born Sullivan Co., IN, residence Upton, Van Buren Co., IA. He enlisted 17 jun 1861, was mustered in 01 feb 1862, and deserted 09 mar 1863 (?) at Union City, TN. He was in Clark Co., MO for the 1860 census (Upton is on the county and state line). Was he named after someone in the Myers family of Sullivan Co., IN? Or some distant relative? The identity of his namesake, as well as the significance of his name, is still a complete mystery.
[4693] if correct family was found in 1870 census and mortality schedule, Vigo Co., IN, then birthplace is listed as TN. However, Civil War enlistment showed IN birthplace.
[4694] mortality schedule -- consumption. In same household, January 1870, Elnor (Lamb) Bryant b. 1834 TN, also of consumption. Another death next door, Lucinda Pitts b. 1803 VA. Corresponding census families were checked too.

An abstract of her obituary is found in the transcribed records of the Van Buren Co. "Old Settlers' Association" (FHL microfilm #0967000). It notes that she arrived in Van Buren Co. from Sullivan County, IN 28 jun 1841. It also gives her name as Eliza Jane, which does not agree with other records.

George is mentioned in the few surviving documents relating to the estate of his father, but we have not been able to identify him on any census record. There are too many George Bryants! One possibility is a George W. Bryant (sometimes known as "Wash") born about 1818 in Kentucky or Indiana (per 1870 census) who married in 1840 in adjacent Clark Co., IL to Agnes Graham, survived until at least 1870 (Melrose Tp.), and whose son Burrill Bryant apparently lived there his entire life (born 10 nov 1843, died 09 sep 1920, married Annie E. Fowler, 1844-1912). So far no proof of the relationship has been found.

The authentic records of Josiah are not numerous. He is on the 1778 tax list for Henry Co., VA. He tried to purchase land from the State of Virginia on several occasions, but appears not to have succeeded. He purchased 100 acres from James Elkins 10 sep 1787 (Henry Co. deeds, 3:342-3), apparently part of Elkins survey of 04 may 1780, 442 acres on both sides of Smith River. He sold (the same?) 100 acres to William Tharpe's heirs 28 aug 1794 (Patrick Co. deeds, 1:193,where the parcel is very poorly described), but remained in the county until at least 29 may 1800, when accused of taking two cows from Deputy Sheriff William Banks (released on bond for his good behavior for 12 months and 1 day, securities Joseph Reynolds and John Sharp, Jr.).
