He is no. 7 in the Bégoz genealogy. He appears in 1531 as the uncle of the children of the late Collet Bégoz. A terrier for the property formerly belonging to the Confrérie du Saint Esprit of Aubonne (ACV Fh 159) includes a reconnaissance (1578) for Gabriel Bégoz, cordonnier, son of Etienne and grandson of Pierre. The property in question had originally been divided with the children of the late Collet Bégoz.

These citations show that Etienne, son of Pierre, must be the cousin of Collet, not his brother.

It is not completely clear which of the Gabriels this is. As of about 1578 there was a Gabriel Begoz notary, and another who was a cordonnier, son of Estievent son of Pierre. We initially followed Henri de Mandrot's genealogy (Recueil des généalogies vaudoises, 1912) as to the parentage of the notary, but de Mandrot evidently combined the Gabriel who was the son of the notary with the cordonnier, whose true parentage is given in a terrier for property formerly belonging to the Confrérie du Saint Esprit of Aubonne, 1578 (ACV Fh 159, this document also giving the name of the mother of Julien Bégoz).
Gabriel the son of Collet was still a minor in 1531, but appears as a witness in 1539, implying that he was by then at least 25 years of age. By 1578, he would have been at least age 64.
The idea that this Gabriel married a de Gilliers is somewhat problematical. De Mandrot refers to Louis de Charrière's "Le vidomnat de Morges et ses attributions" (Mémoires et documents publiés par la société d'histoire de la Suisse romande, 24:425-432, 1868), in which we find Noble Marie de Gilliet appearing in 1546 as guardian of her children by Gabriel Bégoz of Aubonne (who can thus be presumed to have died), nominating François Mandrot as the next Vidomne of Morges. Further, the same Marie de Gilliet was the grandmother of three brothers, François, Claude, and Jaques de Menthon, hereditary Vidomnes of Morges, and she was party to the sale by these three brothers of the Vidomnat of Morges to Their Excellencies of Bern in 1552. De Charrière found this confusing as well, and suggested that the children of Gabriel Bégoz were in fact Marie's grandchildren. Marie died before the end of 1552, when the sale was ratified by each of the three brothers or their respective guardians.
To us, these citations seem to indicate that Marie de Gilliet had married first Janus de Menthon (grandfather of the three brothers who held title to the Vidomnat of Morges), and, possibly then to Gabriel Bégoz of Aubonne, who died before 1546. It is likely that Gabriel held the Vidomnat by a delegation of some sort during the minority of the three brothers. This would have to be yet another Gabriel Bégoz, not the notary who was son of Collet. If this is correct, some of the citations of a Gabriel Bégoz prior to 1546 might not pertain to the notary who was still alive in 1578, and the line of descent would probably be missing a generation. However, the solution first suggested by Louis de Charrière still seems the most plausible, that Marie de Gilliers was simply the widow of Janus de Menthon, and that the vidomne Gabriel Bégoz was her son-in-law.

He is no. 10 in the Bégoz genealogy, but that entry calls him a cordonnier, who was actually the son of Etienne (no. 7).
Once we realized that Henri de Mandrot's account of the Bégoz family (Recueil des généalogies vaudoises, 1912) had combined two separate Gabriels (the notary and the cordonnier, who were contemporaries in the 1570's), it became clear that there must be at least one more Gabriel. The cordonnier is named as the son of Etienne, son of Pierre, in the terrier for the property formerly owned by the Confrérie du Saint Esprit of Aubonne, 1578, and the document was recorded by the notary Gabriel Bégoz, thus proving that there were two men of the same name at that date. De Mandrot says that the Gabriel who was a minor in 1531, and was later Vidomne de Morges circa 1546 left two sons, Gabriel and Jean Jaques. In fact, the citations provided by de Mandrot suggest that Gabriel the Vidomne died in 1546, but he also states that "en 1548 il rend des comptes de son vidomnat, au nom des nobles de Menthon". This seems illogical, and may be a misinterpretation of the original documents, which are not further identified. In 1546, Noble Marie de Gilliet or Gilliez, guardian of the children of Gabriel Bégoz, appeared before the city council of Morges to nominate François Mandrot as the next Vidomne of Morges, and the phraseology seems to presume that Gabriel had died. But if in 1546 he left minor sons Gabriel and Jean Jaques, it does not seem possible that Jean Jaques could have survived until 1645 (as stated by de Mandrot), and we have already seen that de Mandrot has wrongly identified the son Gabriel with the cordonnier. Louis de Charrière later surmised that Gabriel Bégoz must have had some other reason for giving up the vidomnat of Morges, as accounts were submitted in his name for 1546, 1547, and 1548. But that does not explain why Marie de Gilliet would be identified as guardian of his children in 1546, when those children would seem to have no interest in the proceedings. Based on the other citations, it is barely possible that the accounts for those years could have been prepared by Gabriel the son. Gabriel the father could have married before age 25 (thus still technically a minor in 1531, but already married and with a son Gabriel born about 1528). The son would then have to become a notary, following in his father's footsteps, at the age of about 18-20. Both of these contingencies are possible; the requirement that a notary should have reached the age of 25 was not established until 1762 by Their Excellencies of Bern. Further research in the terriers should eventually clarify this confusing situation.
From the available evidence, we might suggest the following scenario: Gabriel son of Collet, born after 1506, married a daughter of Janus de Menthon and Marie de Gilliers before 1528. This Gabriel was appointed Vidomne (representing the interests of the Noble de Menthon family) and produced two sons, Gabriel and Jean Jaques Bégoz, who were still minors when Gabriel the Vidomne died in 1546. The position of Vidomne must have been regarded as hereditary at that time (similar to other administrative offices, such as the Mayor of some villages), and Gabriel's mother-in-law, for reasons that will likely remain forever hidden, decided it was in the interest of the two sons of the late Vidomne that the office should be next given to François Mandrot. Perhaps she had obtained a financial settlement from Mandrot that would relieve the debts of her own family. In any case, it was Gabriel Bégoz son of the vidomne who was the notary who survived until at least 21 jul 1575, and the other son Jean Jaques Bégoz (no. 11 in the Bégoz genealogy, but there apparently confused with someone else) likely died without issue.
A further difficulty is that "Gabriel the cordonnier" who made the "reconnaissance" in 1578 was very likely not the same Gabriel, also a cordonnier, whose daughters Gabrielle and Jeanne Françoise were evidently married much later. Jeanne Françoise, in particular, married first in 1635, to Nicolas Valier, and second, in 1638, to Isaac Vouchy. Further, Jean Jaques, brother of "Gabriel the cordonnier", baptised a daughter Magdelaine in 1629, and his other daughters married in the 1640's. Clearly this cannot be same Jean Jaques Bégoz who was a son of the Vidomne. A plausible solution to this part of the puzzle would be that the cordonnier who died about 1620, and Jean Jaques who died about 1645, were sons of an elder Gabriel the cordonnier, who was the son of Etienne. Thus, we posit the existence of two cordonniers, Gabriel père and fils, in order to fit the chronology.

His parentage is given explicitly in the terrier ACV Fh 159, fol 80v, 27 sep 1573. He is no. 10 in the Bégoz genealogy, but there assigned to a different set of parents. It is also possible that some of the citations for Gabriel (no. 8), son of Collet Bégoz, actually pertain to him. A third source of possible confusion is the real son of Gabriel (no. 8), another Gabriel. We show the Gabriel whose daughter Gabrielle married Laurent Gonvers and whose other daughter Jeanne Françoise married Nicolas Valier as the son of Etienne, following ACV Fh 159.
Given this parentage, he must have been fairly old by 1573. His father had already reached the age of majority in 1523, so it seems likely Gabriel was born around 1530. However, that leaves us with the problem of the parentage of the Gabrielle Bégoz, daughter of one of the Gabriels, born in 1565. For the moment, we suppose that the present Gabriel had a son Gabriel who was in turn the father of that Gabrielle.

As a parent, he is no. 10 in the Bégoz genealogy, where he is listed with the wrong parents. In our opinion, he was not the same Gabriel Bégoz, cordonnier, who is cited in 1578 as the son of Etienne son of Pierre, because that would make him too old to be a likely parent of the two daughters attributed to him. Rather, the Gabriel who died in 1620 and who was a cordonnier is more likely to have been the son of the cordonnier of 1578.
Part of the difficulty is that the two daughters must differ in age by at least 20 years. Gabrielle was already married by 1585 (to her first husband, Discret Jean Billiard), and Jeanne Françoise bore her only known child, Jeanne Valier, in 1636. Gabrielle was thus likely born before 1570, and Jeanne Françoise after 1591. This circumstance suggests that they were the daughters of two different Gabriels, or at least of two different mothers.
The terriers may eventually clarify this problem.

Gabriel son of Julien Bégoz of Aubonne appears as a sponsor at a baptism in Essertines (parish of Gimel) 20 oct 1611 (this page was omitted in the preparation of the microfilms now in use at the Family History Library; the ACV kindly provided a photocopy of this frame, ACV Eb 60/1 pp. 192-193). He must have already reached the age of first communion in order to serve in this capacity, so we place his birth date around 1595, or perhaps earlier. He is not mentioned in the Bégoz genealogy.

She is no. 15 in the Bégoz genealogy. The church registers at Vufflens-le-Château contain a "Rolle de Familles" dated 20 dec 1619. That list includes Lorent Convers, his wife Gabrielle Bégoz, and her daughter Olivière Billard, suggesting a previous marriage. The rest of the household is somewhat ambiguous, but includes Anne Marie Girouz (grand-daughter, but of whom?) and Jean Pierre Billard.
Part of the mystery is resolved by a transaction recorded 04 mar 1610 by Claude Mayor, notary (ACV DB 26/2 fol. 30), in which Gabrielle Begoz, widow in her second marriage to the late Discret Jean Billyard bourgeois de Aubonne, tutrice of their children, rents vineyards at Aubonne (en Cursillie) to Hombert Jaconyer of Aubonne. The name of her first husband has still not been discovered.
However, she is presumably the same Gabrielle daughter of the late Jaques Begoz wife of Discret Jean Billyard bourgeois d'Aubonne who sold property at Tolochenaz to Pierre (?) Jacard the elder, bourgeois de Morges, on 29 mar 1585 (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/5 fol. 92). This calls into question not only her parentage and position in the Bégoz family, but also the statement in the Bégoz genealogy on which her position is based, that she appeared as heir of her father on 23 apr 1620, at that date wife of Laurent Gonvers, notaire et châtelain de Vufflens-le-Château, and delegated power of attorney to Julien Bégoz. For the moment, we leave her where she is, on the grounds that the transaction of 1585 is quite difficult to read, might contain errors, and also that we have no other evidence for a Jaques Bégoz of the right generation to be her father.
A later transaction recorded 17 may 1586 by the same notary (DB 26/6 fol. 4v) shows that Gabrielle Begoz, wife of Jean Billyard, owned property at Aubonne, en la Praz de Montherod, adjacent to property owned by Gabriel Begoz, bourgeois d'Aubonne (who sold his property on that date to Eg. Gabriel Tripod of Aubonne). Also, on fol. 100v of the same register, dated 07 may 1588, Jean Billyard and Eg. Julien Begoz are named as adjacent property owners of Noble Samuel Dunand of Aubonne, who was selling a parcel at Aubonne, en la Petite Praz, to Eg. François Forestey of Aubonne. In the next register, DB 26/7, fol. 74, 06 jul 1591, we find Discret Jean Billiard of Aubonne acting for his wife Gabrielle Begoz, selling property at Tollochinaz to Pierre Jacard of Morges, adjacent to the heirs of Eg. Gabriel Tripod.
More information is found in the church records of Vufflens-le-Château, where Laurent Convers of Morges was the Curial. On 10 feb 1589, he married Esther Pichot. One 20 dec 1608, according to the church records at Vufflens-le-Château, Laurent Convers de Morges, curial at Vufflens, married Gabrielle Begoz, widow of the late Jean Billard of Aubonne. She bore a child in this marriage, Jeanne, born 05 aug 1610, who died 07 sep 1611. Gabrielle was thus born no earlier than 1565, and, ir order to be of marriageable age by 1585, no later than 1570.
