During King Philip's War John was shot at by Indians in 1675 as he passed their fort on the road between Hatfield and Northampton; but he escaped. He was a miller, and during the second settlement of Northfield in 1683 he built a mill on the Cowas, though he maintained his residence in Hatfield. In the Indian attack on Northfield, 16 Aug. 1688, John Clary, his daughter Sarah, aged 15, and four others living round the mill were killed.

John was a prominent and influential citizen. He was a "trader"; owned Lot #13, West side, and probably lived there. He removed to Conway before 1777 and died there.

SAR marker on this gravesite. Tombstone reads: In Memory of Lieut. Joseph Clary who died June 8th, 1748 in the 71st year of his age. (His death occurred long before the Rev. War. Why did SAR place marker?)

[11022] The Clarys lived in both Leverett, an extension of Sunderland, and Amherst, the latter perhaps because they held onto their Hatfield property, from which Amherst evolved. In 1750 the Clarys lived in Leverett at the foot of Cave Hill. On a list of residents in the town of Leverett at the time of incorporation were Joseph Clary and Joseph Clary Jr. (See Corbin's Vital Records of Leverett, Mass., Bk 3, pp 1-243, LDS Film #928669).
Author gives death date of 1748, which must be in error as son Gershom was born in 1755.

[10229] Feb. 19, 2005: Until I discovered the Alameda Co. death records on the internet, I had thought that Sarah E. Brock was buried in Stockton, CA. In her will, she had requested that her husband's remains be moved to her lot in Rural Cemetery in Stockton. In about 1970, when a local researcher was working on the puzzle of where the Brocks were buried, she discovered that the cemetery lot had been sold a year after Sarah's death and the remains of the child "Frederick" had been shipped elsewhere, but no destination was given. Sale participants were those named in Sarah's will.....son, Thomas Brock, his sister, Alice (Brock) Riggs and her daughter-in-law, Dora (Mendenhall) Brock.
For whatever reason, it would appear that the family thought the burials should be in Livermore, where John A. was already interred in the Masonic Cemetery. From the Alameda records, we now know that John, Sarah and Alice are all buried in Livermore. With further exploration we may find that the child or children, formerly buried in Stockton, are also interred in Livermore.
Sarah identifed as the 5th daughter of Isaac B. & Elizabeth Clary. Bible, dated 1850, was a gift to Sarah from her mother. (There must have been another daughter who died young, as Sarah is the 4th daughter listed in the bible).
Given name shown as Eliza S., rather than Sarah Eliza as per the family bible.
BROCK: In this city April 28, 1895, Mrs. S.E. Brock, widow of the late J.A. Brock and mother of Mrs. J.S. Riggs, a native of New York aged 65 yrs., 10 mo., 20 days. The funeral will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m. from the residence of J.S. Riggs, number 324 E. Washington St. The deceased had long been a resident of Stockton, where by her gentle, winning manner and kindness of heart, she endeared herself to a large circle of friends. Her loss is most severely felt by her children, Thomas J. Brock, of Livermore, and Mrs. J.S. Riggs of this city.
Entry #16, Pg 105 of the Callaghan records shows date of burial as 1 May 1895, with no cemetery listed. Person who made arrangements was Tom Brock, her son. Another section on this website had early Livermore, CA obit information, showing that Sarah E. died in Stockton but was buried in the Masonic Cem. in Livermore. Obit was carried in the Livermore Echo, 2 May, pg 3, Col. 1 & 2.
[10227] From obits published in Stockton we had assumed that Sarah was buried in Stockton.
The remains of Mrs. Sarah Eliza Brock, who died in Stockton on April 28th, were brought to Livermore yesterday, and interred at the Masonic Cemetery. Deceased was the mother of T.J. Brock, and the late George Brock, of this valley. (Newspaper research by Jane Everett, Livermore, CA, Apr. 2005)
License was dated 29 April 1847; marriage was performed on 2 May 1847 and recorded on the 27th of May. Parental consent was obtained for Sarah....probably from her mother, since her father was deceased by that time. Certified copy in my possession.
