Mary Elizabeth (Kendrick) Case was born in Iowa and lived there until 1920 when she and her husband and family moved to Bigfork, Montana. They had a farm near the shores of Flathead Lake and also a sheep ranch in the hills.
In 1941, Grandpa retired and they sold the farm and leased the sheep ranch acreage, then moved to Grants Pass, Oregon. She lived there until her death.
She was a teacher and was loved by all who knew her. She liked nice things. I remember how carefully she dressed to go out with Grandpa. I guess she wasn't a beautiful woman, but to me she was beautiful. She and Grandpa were active in the Spanish American War Veterans Society, and for a time she was president of the Ladies Auxilliary (The Lizards). She had a lapel pin shaped like a lizard. When I was 6 years old (ca. 1944) I stayed with them for several months. Grandma would take me with her to the Lizards meetings and I would get to march in with her to the lively march music the pianist would play. After the meeting, they took me to the pot luck dinner that was always held. All of the people there were older, and they made quite a fuss over me. I loved it.
We went to the Methodist Church every Sunday. Frequently, Grandpa & I would wait in the car for her while she finished combing her hair "just so." She wore it wound around her head, but when she took it down at night, it hung below her waist.
She used to let me "help" her churn butter and cut the fresh noodles. She loved to work crossword puzzles, and was a great reader. She was an english teacher, and was very correct in her speech. While I stayed with her, she let me help her cut out blocks for a "postage stamp" quilt for my dolls. Then she quilted it and put borders on it. I treasure it to this day! I have many fond memories of curling up on the couch in the living room and looking out the window or reading.
Her friends from her teaching days in Iowa always maintained their friendship with her and they had several reunions. She enjoyed putting little notices in the newspaper when they or family would visit her in Montana. When I grew up, I was told that Grandma never had many things, but I never had that impression. She had a nice house and car, a lovely warm stove, a "service porch" with lots of food in it, nice necklaces, etc.; and she always made me feel loved and secure. I think that in the things that matter, she was a very rich woman, and I love her very much. 1995
