It is presumed that this is the Jean Bichler who later settled in Houtzdale, Clearfield Co., PA as John Beachler. It is also possible that the settler of Houtzdale was the younger brother of this Jean Bichler, if the latter died in infancy. The descendants in the US give a birthdate of 1844 rather than 1842. Part of the family in the US seems to have believed that their John Beachler came from Belgium rather than France, and we suppose that is where Jean Pierre and Anne may have gone after they left Hottviller in 1842.

Surname of this family is spelled Bichler in French and Büchler in German; occasionally, a clerk favored Bigler or Biegler. The signatures are always in German script, usually Bichler, sometimes Büchler. The death record for Jean George Bichler gives his age, but the first digit is questionable, could be a 9 or a 7, may have started out as a 6. The record states he had been married for 24 years and was from Oberfrick in the Swiss region ("in partibus Helvetorum"), burial at the church of St. Pierre, Neunkirch.
The baptisms of his children are recorded in fragmentary form in the regsisters of Hottviller. At least on microfilm, some of them seem to lack the name of the child, so we are left to assume that the child was named after one of the godparents. In other cases, we were unable to find the baptismal record implied by information posted on several internet sites, presumably because the microfilmed records are in some cases too dim to read. One significant record that everyone agrees is missing is the birth of Michel Bichler, whose parentage is also not mentioned in his marriage record. He is indicated here as a son of Jean Georges, but it is possible he might not be a direct descendant.

He is probably the Nicolas Buchler with wife Catherine who settled in Allegheny Co., PA, where 1850 census shows (6th Ward, Pittsburgh, p. 423B), Nicolas Buchler age 30 b. Germany, wife Catherine age 30 b. Germany, and daughter Eliza age 5 b. Pennsylvania. A different Nicolas, about 10 years younger, came to Pittsburgh later -- that (Jean) Nicolas, with wife Anne Desumer, was the son of Jean Bichler and Anne Marie LeJeune, and was the brother of another Nicolas Bichler who married two wives named Barbara.

No record at Hottviller after his marriage. We have come to believe that he is the "Nicolas John" Buchler who settled in West Mifflin Tp., Allegheny Co., PA with his wife Anne "Dessmer" (one of many spellings in the American records). Obituary in McKeesport Daily News gives names of 11 children, but the daughters are identified only with reference to their husband's names in all but two cases. The husbands were: Jacob Ohms of Lincoln Place, Henry Shaff of Mt. Oliver, John LeJeune of Duquesne, Nicolas Imblum of Duquesne, Roy Hesel or Hoelcel of Youngstown, OH, and (listed in 1906 but not in 1915) John Wolff.
Nicolas and his wife must have sailed for America shortly after their marriage. The 1880 census shows this family in Thompson Run, Allegheny Co., PA:
