Nicolas and his wife settled at Sharpsburg, Allegheny Co., PA about 1850. In some records of that county, the surname is given as Long, reflecting the original pronunciation. The 1850 census lists three children in the family, all born in "Germany". In fact, the family arrived at New York May 20, 1848 on the bark "Camille", along with is wife's relatives, with only the first two children, Jean Nicolas and Nicolas.
