We suppose that Fanny Wells Snider was adopted and raised as Fanny Haven upon her mother's second marriage. No explanation for the middle name has been discovered yet, apart from the fact that her mother is mentioned in the accounts of the estate of Samuel Wells (Sr.) — but Elizabeth was apparently not one of his children.
Information on marriages and children from Dwight Haven's genealogy, FHL microfilm number 0001204: Married first _____ (first name lined out and illegible) Russell, by whom a son Samuel Russell, then second, to Thomas Alverson, by whom a son Thomas Alverson (junior). Notes say she lived at Moriah[, Essex Co., New York] in 1832 (last digit of year not very clear), and died in Michigan. The source of her birth date in this genealogy is from the Nathaniel Haven family bible, copied in 1868 by Mrs. Louisa Edgerton, one of his grand-daughters, while visiting her aunt Polly Flagg (Haven) Williams, who at that time had possession of the bible. The date is consistent with her reported age in the guardianship record of 1785 ("about four years" as of 01 apr 1785), and also with her age at death on her tombstone in Lenawee Co., Michigan. However, in the 1850 census record, as Frances Russel, evidently the mother of Samuel H. Russel, in Hudson, Lenawee Co., Michigan, she is listed as 70 years of age, even though she would not quite have reached her 69th birthday.
In fact, we found her burial in Medina Village Cemetery, Medina, Lenawee Co., Michigan, on Find-a-Grave: "Fanny Wells Russel" (name stated to be from DAR cemetery reading done in 1942, the reference is to Gravestone Records of Lenawee County, Michigan by Harriet Cole Clark Bowen, vol. 5, where the name is recorded as Fanny Russell, the rest of the inscription as indicated here), died 14 jun 1850 (thus she had already died when the family was enumerated for the census that year), age 68 years, 11 months, 26 days (this part of the inscription is clear, and it yields the same birth date recorded in the family bible, 19 jun 1781), "mother of O. W. Alverson". This is Oliver Wells Alverson, born 18 mar 1805, died 01 oct 1887, buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Hudson, Lenawee Co., Michigan. More of the story is contained in an unusually detailed obituary notice, see the entry for Oliver in this database. Fanny died after the 1850 census day, and so was (properly) not included on the Mortality Schedule.
Taken together, the records of Samuel H[avens ?] Russell, Thomas Alverson, and Oliver Wells Alverson establish that they share a mother named Fanny. There are obviously connections of friendship, if not kinship, with the Haven(s) and Wells families, based on the names given to her children, but much remains to be explained.
We also need to acknowledge the previously unstated assumption, that Fanny's surname in 1785 was indeed Snider. She was the daughter of the widow Betsey Snider, clearly, but it never seems to be stated that her father was in fact the elusive Mr. Snider. It seems plausible that Betsey might have been married previously to someone from the Wells family, and then, after the birth of Fanny, who would thus be a Wells, to a Mr. Snider, who died before 1785. This would be consistent with the first marriage, of "Miss Faney Wells" to Thomas Alverson. However, the guardianship record of 1785 explicitly calls her "Fanny Snider". There are several possible conclusions, but we are not yet able to decide among them. First, the surname in the 1785 record could be an error, from the assumption that Fanny had the same surname as her mother, the widow Snider. In other words, Wells might have been her original surname, from a previous marriage of Betsey, and that in turn would provide a possible scenario whereby Betsey would be owed a substantial sum from the Samuel Wells estate. Second, the surname in the 1804 marriage record could be an error, her name was actually Fanny Wells Snider instead of Fanny Wells. Third, the Fanny of 1785 could be a different person from the Fanny of 1804, but in that case we would have to suppose that the 19th Century correspondents who provided information for the Haven genealogy (at a time when none of the supporting records were published) were misinformed, yet somehow managed to create fictitious information that is a strong partial match with a number of obscure records that reside in widely scattered locales.
The supporting documents for the Haven genealogy are on microfilm, but many of them are exceedingly difficult to read, either from fading or from a poorly executed microfilm. More study is needed, in order to establish who provided the facts about this family, how they were related to the people involved, and when. On the face of it, the information about Fanny in the Haven genealogy seems to establish that there was one Fanny, associated with the Snider, Haven, Alverson, and Russell families.
One thing that has been conclusively established, Nathaniel Haven's bible was in the possession of his daughter Polly Flagg Williams in 1868, when her niece Mrs. L. W. Edgerton transcribed the family record at the request of A. C. Haven (typescript of this letter is found in the Haven genealogy records collected and compiled by Dwight C. Haven, FHL microfilm #0000171). The transcript includes the birth of Fanny Wells Haven in 1781, the fact that she died in Michigan (but no date is given), as well as the information that Betsey Snyder was born in "Holland". The rest of the family information, namely, Fanny's marriages and the two children mentioned in the genealogy, comes from another source, apparently in a letter on microfilm #0000171 from the adopted daughter of Polly Flagg (Haven) Williams, Mrs. Mary Compton, now almost entirely illegible or even invisible, but the few words that can be read mention that she believed Fanny had married twice, to Russel and Alverson.
