One document suggests that Jennis Patton may have been in error in placing Mary McDougall here. While it is certain that John J. Dings (and presumably his wife Mary McDougall) purchased part of the middle third of lot 75 from Ronald and Effie McDougall, it does not necessarily follow from that fact that Mary was the daughter of Ronald and Effie. In volume 21 of the deeds of Washington Co., there is a quit claim by Nancy Town and Jane Dings (not naming their husbands, if indeed their husbands were still living) of St. Lawrence Co., NY to John McDougall of Argyle, for their interest in the 35 acres in the middle third of lot 75, executed on 19 oct 1849, and witnessed by John J. Dings, who could not have served in that capacity if he were the husband of Jane. While the description of the parcel is extremely vague, Nancy and Jane were presumably selling off their interest in the remaining parcel of lot 75 that had not been divided after the death of Ronald and Effie. Thus, it may be more logical that Jane McDougall, who had married Peter Dings, was a sister of Nancy McDougall, who had married Edward Town. Peter Dings had died in 1848, so Jane was indeed a widow when the quit claim deed was made. Edward Town, too, had already died, before 1830, so Nancy was also a widow in 1849.
However, it is indeed possible that Mary, apparently the first wife of John J. Dings, was also a sister of Jane McDougall, wife of John's brother Peter Dings. We found no indication that John and Mary had any children, and we have no information about what became of John and his second wife Sarah Scott.

1855 census has Mary and Catherine McDougall in separate family. The ages given in the 1860 and 1870 censuses are inconsistent, and there is a gap in the birthdates of the children. It is possible that Mary McDougall Sheffer died before 1869, and that the last child who appears on the 1870 census is the child of a different wife, also named Mary. The state census records may be able to resolve this problem.

Records of Lorraine Wallace indicate Mary Elizabeth married John Lamb 20 aug 1870 in Iowa. GAR marker for John Lamb signaled that Mary was a Civil War pensioner. The pension file, however, had been transferred to San Francisco where one Larry Heacock of 230 Buckingham Way wished to examine it! At the time of her death, Mary had 5 surviving children and 9 grandchildren.
[7464] Date pension file. 1880 census indicates parents b. NY. Birthplace from Phyllis Pellet, only grand-daughter of Ralph Lamb (Pigeon falls was then part of Crawford Co.) but pension affidavit says Madison, WI.
[7465] Obituary in Bulletin-Journal, 10mar1938 says she died at the home of her son Jesse Lamb in Chicago, of a heart attack. She had lived until the previous July with her son Ralph in NY state.
[7466] row 15. Stone reads Mary McDougal Lamb, according to communication from Buchanan Co. Gen. Soc.
[15045] Pension file of Mary Lamb, certificate dated 06 may 1893 prepared by O. J. Lamb, Clerk of District Court of Linn Co., her son. Minister given as A. Young.
