The best source of information is the pension file for his widow and minor children. He served in the Civil War in Company B, 70th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The pension file contains affidavits concerning his death (killed in action, but another part of the file says he died of extreme fatigue and sunstroke during the battle, while carrying the body of Capt. J[ames] F. Summers from the field, near Atlanta, Georgia on 28 jul 1864— this was the battle of Ezra Church), his marriage, all of his children, and the remarriage of his widow. These marriage records no longer exist in the records of Adams County, Ohio, due to the courthouse fire in 1910.
