Surname is known from presence of "wife's sister" Barbary McNeil b. 1837 in 1855 census listing for this family. 1865 census shows Nancy and her only surviving son Orren boarding with another family. Her husband and 4 other children died of diphtheria in 1861-62. 1865 census notes she bore 6 children, all accounted for.
1865 census notes she bore 6 children, only 5 accounted for. At first it appeared that there was an earlier son Lorenzo b. about 1853, parents given as James and Jane. Both the latter couple and James H. and Nancy have now been found on the 1860 census, so Lorenzo is now assigned to a different family.

1950 census: 104-B Singleton Ave., Alameda, Alameda Co., CA, Harold R. McNichol, 28, b. Pennsylvania, married, Navy, wife Alda M., 26, b. Arkansas, son Ronald J., 6, b. California, son John B., 3, b. California, family lived in Island Co., Washington a year ago.
He was named after his uncle, who had served in the Marines in World War II and was lost in the battle of Tarawa in 1943. His uncle was buried on Tarawa, but his remains were not recovered until 2017, and finally buried at Arlington National Cemetery in 2018. The younger John V. McNichol was therefore sometimes known as John V. McNichol II. Two more brothers of Harold McNichol also served in World War II.
