Family 1 : Mary Ann HENDERSON (dates unknown)

His will is in book "FF 6", p. 108, Cecil Co., MD, dated 11 apr 1797. His will mentions unspecified obligations from his father's will, for which he had to pay his sisters. He mentions a nephew William Rowland, son of Robert Rowland, thus establishing that he is the son of John and Frances McCay whose daughter Easter had married Robert Rowland. He mentions his wife Mary and a son John, a minor, who is to inherit an island in the Susquehannah River called McCay's Island.

His death is recorded (giving his age and parentages) at St. Mary Anne's Protestant Episcopal Church, Cecil Co., MD.

Carrie B. MCCLURE       (ID #I691)

(female)
Father: John Ocktree MCCLURE (b. OCT 1839, d. 1923)
Mother: Harriett Cynthia URAN (b. 14 NOV 1848, d. 1936)

[216] Exact date from IGI. Cemetery record has year only.

[217] Carrie does not appear on the 1880 census, but is listed on the 1920 census as the daughter of John O. and Hattie McClure. This raises a problem: 1900 census indicates Hattie as mother of 6 children, 5 living.

Edward C. MCCLURE       (ID #I692)

(male)
Father: John Ocktree MCCLURE (b. OCT 1839, d. 1923)
Mother: Harriett Cynthia URAN (b. 14 NOV 1848, d. 1936)

One additional burial at the Masonic Cemetery in Adel Tp. may pertain to this family group. Mary L. McClure 26may1890-14apr1962 could be the widow of Edward, or she could be the wife of the Orville W. McClure 29feb1884 - 19jan1958, presumed to belong to a different McClure family because he does not appear in the John O. McClure family in any census.

[218] Cemetery record shows dates as 1885-1910. Perhaps 1900 census is in error on birthdate, a very common problem in the 1900 census (often off by 1 year).

Alexander is identified as the father of Samuel McCoy and the grandfather of George W. McCoy in the following biographical sketch (Biographical Review of Cass, Schuyler, and Brown Counties, Illinois, Chicago: Biographical Review Publishing Co., 1892, p. 344):

GEORGE W. McCOY, an extensive farmer of Mt. Sterling, Illinois, was born in Adams county, Ohio, January 1, 1831. His father, Samuel McCoy, was born in Cecil county, Maryland, in 1796. The grandfather of our subject, Alexander McCoy, was born in Ireland, of Scotch ancestry. His parents were poor and he commenced very early to earn his own living, being brought up to work in a factory. He was a lad in his 'teens when he came to America and located in Maryland, where his parents who had preceded him to America were then living. He learned the cooper's trade, which he followed for some time. He was twice married but lost both of his wives before coming to Ohio. After the death of his second wife he removed with his children to Ohio and lived in that State some years, and then spent his last years in Brown county. The father of our subject died in 1882, in the eighty-fifth year of his age. He was about eighteen years old when he went to Ohio. He was very industrious, saved his earnings and finally purchased land in Adams county. He then turned his attention to agricultural pursuits but still followed his trade a portion of each year. He resided in Adams county until 1839, and then sold his farm there and came to Illinois. He was accompanied by his wife and three children, and the entire journey was made overland. After about fifteen days' travel they landed in Brown county. He purchased a tract of land near Versailles, and there devoted his time to farming. He was a resident of Brown county until his death, which occurred as before stated.

The maiden name of the mother of our subject was Sarah Pilston. She was born in Virginia, a daughter of William and Easter Pilston. She died in Ohio in 1834.

The subject of this writing was in his ninth year when he came to Illinois with his parents. At that time the country was wild and deer, wild turkeys, and other game were quite plentiful. Farming was conducted in the most primitive manner. All the grass was cut with a scythe, and the grain was either cut with a reap hook or a cradle and trampled out with horses or with a flail. There were no fanning-mills, and in order to clean the grain one man would take it in a seive and hold it high and two others would stand by with a sheet with which they fanned the air and in that manner separated the grain from the chaff.

Mr. McCoy remained with his father until nineteen years of age, then commenced farming on rented land. When he attained his majority his father gave him $250, and with that and his earnings he had enough to pay cash on 120 acres of land, which is now included in the farm he now occupies. The whole price of the farm was $680, and he paid six per cent interest on the balance. He lived in a log cabin and in that humble abode himself and wife commenced housekeeping. They occupied that dwelling about eighteen months and then built a brick house. Since that time he has erected a commodious frame house and other buildings, planted fruit and shade trees and placed the land in a high state of cultivation. He has been very successful as a farmer and has purchased other land at different times and is now the owner of about 500 acres, all in Brown county.

The marriage of Mr. McCoy took place January 27, 1853, to Sarah Harper. She was born in Ohio, August 29, 1835, and was the daughter of Elder James Harper. Mrs. McCoy died November 2, 1868, and Mr. McCoy subsequently married Lucinda, a sister of his former wife, October 28, 1869. She was born in Brown county, Illinois, April 17, 1847, and died May 7, 1890. He was married to Laura J. Putman, October 28, 1891. She was born in Ohio, August 7, 1841. Her father, William Putman, was born in Bourbon county, Kentucky, October 16, 1797, and was the son of Zachariah and Winnifred (Collins) Putman. The parents of Mrs. McCoy moved to Ohio and resided in Champaign county for some years, coming from there to Illinois in 1841, at which time the father purchased a farm in Mt. Sterling township, which he occupied until his death, July 24, 1880. Mr. McCoy has five children by his first marriage: Elvira, Mahala, Mary Jane, Turner and Martha. Of his second marriage there are William and Arthur. Mr. and Mrs. McCoy are members of the Primitive Baptist Church and are good pious people. In politics he affiliates with the Democratic party. He has served long as Supervisor and has been Chairman of the Board.

In spite of the statement that Alexander McCoy spent his last years in Illinois, Ohio Wills & Estates to 1850 (Carol Willsey Bell, 1981) notes a reference to an Alexander McCoy estate dated 1841 in the Administrations & Estates Docket of Adams County, Ohio, p. 14, case # 56. Unfortunately, this volume, presumed to be one of the few to survive the disastrous courthouse fire of 1910, seems now to have disappeared, according to the Adams County Genealogical Society. Taken at face value, however, these statements suggest that Alexander may have died in Illinois but still owned property in Ohio, and that his will was therefore filed in Ohio. We did not find any mention of his estate in Brown Co., IL, but it is still possible that he was living with some part of the family that resided elsewhere in Illinois, or even in Indiana (where John Wingate McCoy lived for a time). The Adams County, Ohio court house burned in 1910, and most of the probate records were lost. If Alexander owned any real property in Adams County at the time of his death, as might be expected if there were probate proceedings, we might expect some trace of it in the deed books, all of which seem to have survived the fire. Our search of these records is hampered by the lack of a microfilmed index. Also, if Alexander really did die in Illinois, we would guess that his will or administration would have been filed first in Illinois. It might be worthwhile to search the probate records of the counties surrounding Brown.

The county history says Alexander was born in Ireland, presumably in the Scottish settlements in the North, came to US as a teen, married twice in Maryland but lost both wives, then (?) moved to Adams County, Ohio about 1815. Names in later generations suggest his full name might have been John Alexander McCoy. Could he have been the John McCoy on p. 28 of the 1810 census, Cecil Co., MD?

We have found no certain record of Alexander in Maryland, but there are several records that merit further consideration. First, the transcribed marriage record in Cecil County, rendered as "Alexander Cay (?)" to Hannah McCollough (one of many contemporary spellings of McCullough, a common surname in Cecil County), in 1796, seems very likely to be his. The original record has not been examined (not available on microfilm through the Family History Library), but we suppose the question mark could signify uncertainty about the symbol, sometimes indistinct, commonly used to abbreviate "Mc". The date is about right, and the name of the bride was predicted from the names of the children of Alexander's son Samuel. There is no other marriage that could be his in the transcribed records, although the transcript is known to contain errors.

The second record is an Alexander McCoy in the 1790 census of South Susquehanna Hundred, Cecil County (p. 325). The listing shows no free white males over 16, nor any under 16, and no slaves. The only column checked is the "other" column. Logically, this column could be used for a free non-white male, or perhaps an indentured male (thus not "free" and not "slave") of any race, or even a white male under the age of 16 who is living by himself. There are other males listed this way in the same census, so it might be possible to determine the correct interpretation empirically.

Reading between the lines, it appears that Alexander was left in Ireland in a work house or factory, and somehow managed to find his way to America while still in his teens and before learning a trade. How could he have paid for the passage, if not through an indenture? Was he recruited to work for a cooper, who paid his passage in return for several years of his labor? This scenario seems to indicate, also, that Alexander's parents remained too poor to offer any significant support. A possible scenario is that Alexander "learned the cooper's trade" precisely through his indentured service in Maryland, and that his master is one of the people listed in South Susquehanna Hundred in the 1790 census—however, the census schedule as it now exists was alphabetized, and not listed in the order in which the households were visited. Alexander and his master were probably brought together at a "sale" of new arrivals at the port of entry, presumably Philadelphia, New Castle, or Baltimore. Alexander's master would have made a payment to the ship's captain, and the transaction might have been legally recorded. It might be worthwhile to look for a cooper among the residents of South Susquehanna, and then to investigate the cooper's business dealings.

In the proceedings related to the estate of Samuel McCullough, his father-in-law, we find Alexander McCoy purchasing several items at the estate sale in 1804 (see below, and in our notes on Samuel McCullough).

The first record that seems absolutely certain is the census listing of 1820, in Scott Tp., Adams Co., OH, where his neighbors include John and Thomas McCullough! However, their presence may simply be a coincidence; there are references to John and Alexander McCullough (or McCulloch) in deeds in this area as early as 1808, mentioning surveys in their name. It may be that they are actually Virginians who had some claim in the Virginia Military District. It is also possible that they are relatives of the McCullough families found in Cecil Co., MD. So far, we have not found any of them in the 1850 census to discover where they were born.

The 1820 census listing shows Alexander was then age 45 or older (thus born before 1775). He had two sons (one under 10, the other under 16 years of age) and two daughters (one under 10, the other under 16). There is also a woman age 45 or older. Perhaps his second wife did actually come with the family to Ohio. She is gone by 1830. By 1820, Alexander's son Samuel had already married in Adams Co., but we did not find him on the census. Was he living with another family? Or were Samuel and John Wingate McCoy simply missed by the enumerator?

In 1830, we find Alexander in Wayne Township. He is then age 50-60, thus born 1770-1780. He seems to have the same two sons and two daughters as before, but there is an additional female in the 15-20 age bracket. Has one of the sons married? Or is there a housekeeper?

In 1840, we were unable to locate Alexander in any census.

A possible mention of our Alexander is found in the will of Samuel McCullough of South Susquehanna Hundred, Cecil Co., MD. An abstract of this will is found in a group of miscellaneous citations of the McCullough surname in Maxwell History and Genealogy, p. 372 (by L.A. C. Blaine and E. D. Mellette, 1916). According to the abstract, the will includes a bequest of 5 shillings (likely intended as a minimal amount to signify the testator's opinion!) to his son-in-law Alexander McCay, and 15 pounds to his grandson Samuel McCay as soon as he reached the age of 21. The abstract is a bit confused, but the original is clear. Among the residual heirs are his son Samuel McCullough, who may be the one born 14 feb 1775 (IGI) who later married his cousin Mary McVey and settled first in Rockbridge Co., VA (1815) and soon thereafter in Adams Co., OH (1816) (see extensive account of this family in the Evans and Stivers History of Adams County, Ohio, pp. 595 ff.). (The reference for the will of 1802 is to a liber formerly designated FF, and now known as will book 6, on FHL microfilm #0013868. The web site of the Maryland Archives indicates the will is on pp. 353-355 of this volume and shows the date as 01 may 1804.)

We found descendants of three of the children of Alexander and Hannah who married descendants of Nathan and Rebecca Perry: Eliza Jane, daughter of Alexander, married (2) Luke Perry; John Alexander, son of Sarah Ann, daughter of Alexander, married Margaret Ann Perry; and three sisters Louisa, Elizabeth, and Emily, daughters of Alexander McCoy Jr. married, respectively, Thomas Fielding Perry, Francis Marion Perry, and William Perry. If any of their descendants have taken autosomal DNA tests, it might be possible to establish some additional relationships.

[5543] County histories imply that Alexander spent his last days in Brown Co., IL, but there is a published record of an Alexander McCoy estate, George McCoy executor, on Adams Co. OH docket 12 aug 1841 (volume now lost???).

[14810] According to Brown Co. history. Logically, the mother of John Wingate McCoy should have been a daughter of John Wingate, and there are many Wingates in Cecil Co., MD around the time Samuel McCoy was born.
