On earlier group sheets James and Hiram were probably placed in the wrong birth order as the birthdate of James was then thought to be circa 1823. James and Hiram might even have been twins....in the 1850 census, both are shown as age 30 (Hiram in Crawford Co., WI and James in Mackinac Co., MI). Later census readings would indicate James was probably born in 1819. [9654] Found on Ancestry.com, this shows that James was still alive in 1884. [9647] Michilimackinac Deed Records, Bk C:, Family History Microfilm #1007577, Salt Lake City, UT James Rice witnessed a deed between James Converse and Jonathan King, placing him in Mackinac Co, MI as early as April 1841.

By 1890 these same parcels of land was deeded over to Harriet Dabb only, with her husband witnessing the transaction.

See notes of Sarah Clark. Her family had dire things to say about Dabb....he supposedly poisoned his wife, took her estate as well as that of her uncle, James Rice. Based on family legends which may or may not be true. Dabb supposedly died in about 1913.

[9560] Civil War Certificate of Disability and Discharge, dtd. Feb. 1863 During the Civil War (1862-65) James Harvey Rice served in Co. E, 100th Indiana Volunteers, with rank of Private. He was discharged because of a knee injury but was carried on the Army rolls until 1865. Medical record and certificate of disability, dtd 25 Feb. 1863, were issued in the name of Harvey. Service record does not contain date of birth. Physical description given in his service record showed that James was 6' 1" tall, had a light complexion, grey eyes and auburn hair.

Buried in those four plots were Ezra, Nettie, Leon & James....James was brought to Maplewood Cemetery from Luverne Cemetery in 1886. He died of pneumonia in 1873. [9563] Apparently James Harvey Rice served as Sheriff of Rock Co., MN and must have died there in the fall of 1873. His brother, Ezra, was appointed to serve out his unexpired term.

[12124] Inscription from the Old Burial Grounds in Worcester, MA: "In memory of Jonas Rice, Esq., who died Sept. 20, 1753, in the 81st year of his age".

He was the first settler in Worcester. Came from Marlboro and settled here in 1713. Deacon of the first church from 1748 to 1753. Selectman, 1722, 1724, 1728, 1730, 1732, 1735, 1738, and 1740. Town Clerk 1722-3; 1724-29, 1731-53. Schoolteacher as will be seen by the following vote: 1726 Apr. 4: voted that ye selectmen forthwith take care and provide a sufficient schoole for ye Education of Youth in sd Town of worcester.

Selectmen agree with Mr. Jonas Rice to be ye schoole master for sd Town of Worcester and to teach such children and youth as ye Law Directs --- to keep such schoole untill ye fifteenth Day of December next Ensuing ye date hereof; Sd schools to (be) Supported at the Towns Charge.
