He was executed in Bern in 1513 as a result of the scandal resulting from the defeat of the Swiss mercenaries in the service of France at Novarra, Italy on June 6 of that year. The elite of Bern had been secretly supporting the French in return for generous pensions. After the defeat, when the list of pensioners was revealed, the public demanded punishment for those involved, and Glaser suffered the consequences as the person in charge of distributing the pensions. He was also the innkeeper at the Lion. The city council of Bern decreed on July 28 that there would be no more external alliances without the consent of the citizens.
The death sentence was announced on July 2. "Le spectacle ne manque pas d'être parfois étrange : Michel Glaser, distributeur des couronnes et aubergiste du « Lion », est condamné à mort sur la place publique par le juge Guillaume de Diesbach, auquel il transmettait la pension française..." (Conrad André Beerli, Le peintre poète Nicolas Manuel et l'évolution sociale de son temps, Geneva: E. Droz, 1953).
Glaser, or rather one of his heirs, may have been a donor for the "Totentanz" of Niclaus Manuel. He was also a witness to Manuel's marriage contract in 1509.
Civil registration index entry for death is September quarter 1861, 1 d 236.
[14830]
Witness for the marriage was Thomas James Scalé.

This appears to be the Mathieu Gloray who married Ester Johannot. His parents are Anthoine Gloray and Marie Baibrit (? illegible), and witnesses at the baptism were Mathieu Johannot and Anne Pinet. Ester Johannot was the dau. of this Mathieu and his wife Catherine Pinet, Anne Pinet was the sister of Catherine, and the wife of the brother of Mathieu, Barthelemy Johannot. Mathieu and Ester appear in Morges 06 dec 1686 at the baptism of the daughter of Pierre Crégut, cy devant Ministre à Annonay en Vivaretz. By 1690, they were in Erlangen, Germany, as was the minister Pierre Crégut and several others of their relatives.
[14811]
Might this couple be parents of the Anthoine Gloray of Annonay whose son Barthelemi married in Aubonne 05 jun 1711 to Jaquette, daughter of Jaques de Liron, Sr. d'Ayrols en Cevennes?
