He is presumed to be the same Claude Richard, notary, whose registers 1574-1579 are catalogued as ACV DL 78. There is a marriage contract in the records of Jaques Richard, notary at Moudon, for Claude son of the late Jaques Besson, métral de Chappelle Vauldane, to Jaquemaz daughter of the late Bernard Richard, assisted by her brother the notary Claude Richard (04 mar 1577). Unless there was another notary of the same name at Moudon (no evidence for this has been found), this document apparently establishes his parentage.
In the registers of the notary Jean Jaquier (ACV DL 53/3, fol. 104v), we find an interesting document dated 06 feb 1583 bearing on the Richard family: Egrège Jaques Richard is commissioned to take custody of the registers of the late Claude Richard, because Claude's son Pierre Richard is still too young to act as a notary.

Was she Claudine Pivard, or Claudine Richard? We found both versions. The marriage to Sébastien DuBrit says Richard, and there is a settlement dated 26 sep 1663 in the records of the notary Faucherres (ACV DL 40/13) involving "Sbastian" Dubrit and his wife Claudine Richard, with her son Denis Burnand, secretayre conseilliayre de Moudon. Futher, this document calls Sebastien the "beaupère" (step-father) of Denis. Nevertheless, the Burnand genealogy calls her Claudine Pivard, daughter of Pierre. We assume this was a misreading of the original documents (somewhere in the church records?), and we wondered if Claudine should be understood as the daughter of Pierre Richard, possibly the one who was a notary at Moudon.
However, since we had not located any document that actually mentions her father, we wondered if she might be the same Claudine Richard (born in 1592, daughter of Jaques Richard, notary at Moudon) who married Antoine Trolliet in 1615. As far as we have been able to determine, the Claudine who was widow of Daniel Burnand had no further children by Sebastien Dubrit; her last known children were born in 1631, so she must have been born after 1586.
Proof that the Claudine who married Antoine Trolliet was the daughter of Jaques, the brother of the notary Pierre Richard, is found in documents recorded by the notary Jaques Jayet of Moudon (ACV DL 57), including a testament of Pierre dated 11 sep 1628 with a codicil recorded 16 sep 1628. Since we have the baptismal date of Pierre son of Jaques Richard (26 jul 1579), as well as the name of Pierre's wife, Pernette Curlat, we can begin to assess the plausibility of the information published in the Burnand genealogy.
Further, we found the testament of Claudine Richard, wife of "Sbastian" Dubrict l'ayné, hoste and bourgeois de Moudon, among the records of the notary Pierre Gavin of Moudon (ACV DL 45/1, dated 09 aug 1655). The testament names as heirs only her son, "Egrège Denys Burnand notaire et bourgeois de Moudon son cher et bien-aymé fils". The fact that she does not name anyone else implies very strongly that she was not the same Claudine Richard who married Antoine Trolliet. Could she have been the daughter of Pierre Richard? Apparently not: the testament of Pierre Richard names, instead of his children, his sisters Claudine and Marguerite, and his widow Pernette Curlat. That leaves one other possibility: perhaps the Claudine Richard who married Daniel Burnand is the daughter of a different Pierre Richard, and perhaps not one from Moudon.

His marriage record of 1578 at Moudon identifies him as a notary, citizen of Lausanne, resident at Moudon. His surviving notarial registers cover 1572-1606 (ACV DL 89). It is possible he is the son of Pierre Richard, a notary at Lausanne (surviving registers ACV DG 218, covering 1554-1612). Jaques might also have been a brother of the notary Claude Richard (son of Bernard, see marriage contract of Claude Besson and Jaquemaz Richard 04 mar 1577, in register of Jaques Richard, ACV DL 89), also working at Moudon (ACV DL 78, 1574-1579). Jaques may have been somewhat older, however. The baptisms at Moudon, beginning in 1568, already show children of a Jaques, Jacob, or Jacobé Richard, habitant, apparently all the same person based on the intervals between the children and other evidence.
He was a "commissaire", that is, a notary appointed to compile terriers. After his death, his son Pierre made a "reconnaissance" for property mortgaged by his father (ACV Fn 343 fol. 601, 08 jan 1612).
Father's name listed as Jaques Richard, habitant.

Witnesses at baptism were: Daniel Richard son père (i.e., father of the child's father) and Magdelaine Malvesin "a elle present le main Magdelaine Terrasson sa mère et femme du Sr. Pierre Malvesin". (Magdelaine Terrasson is thus mother of Magdelaine Malvesin, but it is not clear if there is a relationship to the child.)

She is named in a partage 23 feb 1611 for her sons George, Benoit, and Jean. The document, recorded by Jaques Jaquier, notary at Moudon (ACV DL 52/1 fol. 33), also names her nephew Pierre Richard.
Based on the church records and other documents, he could not be Pierre Pivard, as stated in the Burnand genealogy. The father of Claudine Richard may have been Pierre Richard, and perhaps the one who was a notary at Moudon, but we have found no proof. We found no baptism at Moudon that could be hers. Some of the Richards of Moudon came from Lausanne, so it is possible her parentage should be sought there.
However, the parentage of Pierre Richard the notary is apparently established by an entry in the index for the terrier ACV Fn 346 (circa 1600), indicating that Discret Pierre Richard is the son of Egrege Claude Richard, and that the widow of Egrege Claude Richard was Françoise, daughter of Jehan Caney of Sottens. (Again, there is a conflict; other records say she was the daughter of Louis Caney.) Further, this citation allows us to equate the present Pierre Richard with the "commissaire" Pierre Richard: the title commissaire designates someone appointed to compile a terrier. In the church records of Moudon, we find the widow of Pierre Richard, commissaire, Catherine daughter of the late François "Peyterlin" (=Poeterlin), marrying Esthyvent Delachenaulx, conseiller et bourgeois de Morges. At first, we thought these must be the same Pierre Richard. It now appears that there must have been two notaries of the same name: the commissaire who died before 1587 and who married Catherine Poeterlin, and Pierre son of Claude, who was still alive 26 feb 1600, now resident at Lausanne, selling property to François Vauruz of Moudon (Jaques Richard, notary, ACV DL 79/3).
As late as 1583, Pierre son of the notary Claude Richard was still too young to exercise his profession (ACV DL 53/3 fol. 104v).

Father's name listed as Jacobe Richard in the baptismal register at Moudon. He is, however, clearly the Egrège Pierre Richard whose testament was recorded 11 sep 1628 and 16 sep 1628 by Jaques Jayet, notary at Moudon (ACV 57/4 fol. 21), naming his wife Pernette Curlat and sister Claudine Richard, widow Trolliet, among others. Later transactions recorded by the same notary show that Claudine was the widow of Antoine Trolliet; that Pierre also had a sister Marguerite who had married the notary Denis Pivard; that he had a brother Antoine (dead by 1629); that he was the son of the notary Jaques Richard; and that the widow Pernette Curlat remarried to the notary Jaques Frossard (the younger). (In lieu of the specific provisions made in his testament, his widow and his sister made a settlement between themselves 22 mar 1629, recorded by the same notary, ACV DL 57/4 fol. 49.)
The wording of his testament comes very close to stating that he had no children. Among other provisions, he says "advenant que madite femme mourust sans enfans procrées de son propre corps en legitime mariage, je veux et ordonne que ladite part doibge revenir à madite soeur et es siens..." He made also made bequests to his nephew, Pierre son of Jean Bezenson and his sister's son Jaques [Trolliet]. The testament was apparently written in his own hand on 11 sep 1628, then presented for probate 16 sep 1628, at which time it was recorded by the notary Jaques Jayet.
