He worked as an "Indian Agent" in the "White Shield Camp" or "Old Camp", later to becom the town of Hammon, in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma. He was assigned there after "opening" of the Cheyenne- Arapaho land in 1892, in the position of "Additional Farmer". He worked for the Red Moon Agency, to build a reservation school and to teach the Cheyenne and Arapaho to farm. A post office was established in his home on 30 jun 1894, his wife Ida M. serving as postmaster. In 1896 he was transferred to the Sugar Creek Sub-station, at Kiowa Agency.
A bit more can be gleaned from a pension index card, for James H. Hammon, last rank Sergeant, Co., C., 1st regiment US Cavalry, enlisted 17 aug 1873, discharged 17 oct 1878, died 16 feb 1905 at Wilmington, Ohio. Invalid pension filed 12 sep 1891, and widow's claim 11 may 1905. The enlistment was at Cincinnati, and his age at enlistment was 18, thus placing his birth in about 1855. The 1900 census (Wilmington, Clinton Co., OH) gives his age as 44, born February, 1856. At that date, interestingly, we find his stepdaughters in the household, Pearle (born July, 1877) and Jessie (born August, 1878) Whitesight (indexed, unfortunately, as Whitelight).
Some family trees (e.g., on FamilySearch.com) call him Hammond, but the documentation cited above is clear.
