Parents are listed as John and Martha on the transcribed cemetery record of a William A. McNeil, apparently belonging to a different family. The William (T.?) who is the child of John J. McNeil is still alive at the 1880 census.

1950 census: 104-B Singleton Ave., Alameda, Alameda Co., CA, Harold R. McNichol, 28, b. Pennsylvania, married, Navy, wife Alda M., 26, b. Arkansas, son Ronald J., 6, b. California, son John B., 3, b. California, family lived in Island Co., Washington a year ago.
He was named after his uncle, who had served in the Marines in World War II and was lost in the battle of Tarawa in 1943. His uncle was buried on Tarawa, but his remains were not recovered until 2017, and finally buried at Arlington National Cemetery in 2018. The younger John V. McNichol was therefore sometimes known as John V. McNichol II. Two more brothers of Harold McNichol also served in World War II.
