[10244] Records about John A. Brock are scant. Like all of the Brock men, he seemed to suffer from wanderlust and did not stay in one place for any length of time. A letter from John Brock to his sisters in Ohio, dated 1859, suggests that the Brocks made almost yearly trips from Chicago to California before they settled permanently in the San Joaquin Valley in about 1862. From one record to another, his occupation changed. Variously listed as a clerk, store-keeper, merchant, book-keeper, deputy assessor and stock-raiser.
[10239] Bureau of Land Management records online (http://www.glorecords.blm.gov) show that John A. Brock purchased a tract of land on this date. Aliquot Parts: NW; Sec./Block 26, Range 7E, Mount Diablo Meridian, State of California, San Joaquin County, 160 acres. Document #962. Accession/Serial Number: CACAAA 044712. BLM Serial number is the same. The actual document is not yet online.
Sutro Branch, California State Library, San Francisco, CA; Vol. 7, part 21, pg 17: Brock, John, male, white, age 27, b. IL; res. IL; Brock, Mrs. female, white, age 23, b. NY.
John Brock died in Livermore, CA, while visiting his son, George.
Index to these records shows John A. Brock, died 13 Jan. 1887. He was buried in the Masonic Cememtery, Livermore, CA. Age given as 64 yrs, 1 mo, and 4 days. These figures agree with the vital statistics in the Brock family bible. This puts his birthdate two years earlier than we previously thought.
[10243] Early on, it was difficult to decipher the handwritten vital stats in the family bible. The age for John A. Brock differed from census to census, so we had a date range of ca 1823-25 and had settled on 1824 to use in the genealogy program. Date of birth has now been changed to 1822.
License was dated 29 April 1847; marriage was performed on 2 May 1847 and recorded on the 27th of May. Parental consent was obtained for Sarah....probably from her mother, since her father was deceased by that time. Certified copy in my possession.

[14999] The marriage record of Thomas Brock to Nancy Moore has been incorrectly recorded in the LDS records in Salt Lake City, as well as in the Indiana Magazine of History, vol. 52, 1956. The name was written BEACH, instead of BROCK, and it was many years before we had a letter of correction from the clerk in Fayette Co., IN showing that the entry was Brock, not Beach.
[15514] Marriage record for Thomas Brock and Esther (Eskham) Minor can be found on the internet: cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/marriage.html IL Marriages.
[15515] Marriage date was estimated from the 1850 census, showing that the couple had a two year old child "A" (known to be Amanda).
[10304] Section about Thomas Brock provided by Alice McCoy, 1987
Chicago City Council Proceedings Files, 1833-1871, show that Thomas Brock took the official oath of Assessor of the 2d Ward on 21 March 1839. The following month he submitted a proposal for ferries at Clark and State Sts.
Indexed as "Thos" Brock but name written in full in the actual record. Thomas Brock, age 60, Cattle Dealer, b. NC; Elizabeth, age 50, b. NY.Matilda McHenry, age 23, b. NY; Euphema Brock, age 11, b. IL; Henry Gilbert, Farmer, age 20, b. OH; Isreal Stimpson, age 31, b. NY; Montcalm Stimpson, age 35, b. NY; George McHenry, Clerk, b. IRE, age 21; Ann Leary, Servant, b. IRE, age 18; Jimmie McHenry, age 1, b. IL.
[10308] Matilda McHenry was Elizabeth's daughter by her first marriage. Obviously, George was her husband and their child was Jimmie, b. ca 1859 in IL. Euphema, as we now know, is the same child as Amanda. Others in household b. in New York could have been relatives of Elizabeth, hired help or boarders.
Listed with the French family was Thomas Brock, age 67, b. NC. Occupation: Goat Herder; estate valued at $6000. (The herd of goats in Amador Co. was mentioned in the estate papers filed in San Joaquin Co, CA, later that year).
"DIED -- In Sacramento, Sep. 13th, Thomas Brock, a resident of Stockton, aged about 70 years. The funeral will take place from the residence of the son of the deceased on El Dorado St., at ten o'clock today."
[10311] Research by Helen Toal, local historian, Stockton, CA, ca 1975; See also, research notes of Laurie McCoy, May 1978. Death notice in newspaper "Alta", 14 Sep. 1870, pg 1, col. 8.
"A Coroner's inquest was held on the remains of Thomas Brock, who died suddenly at the Fountain House in Sacramento, last Tuesday evening. The evidence showed that he was seventy years of age and he had been subject for several years to severe attacks of illness, during one of which he doubtless died. The verdict of the jury was that he came to his death from natural causes. It was deemed unnecessary to hold a post mortum examination. The remains were brought to this city last evening, and the funeral of the deceased took place at ten o'clock this morning." (Symptoms given in the coroner's report would appear to be those of a classic heart attack).
"I have begun indexing the early marriage books. There is a marriage for a Thomas Brock to a Nancy Moore on 4 Feb. 1821. I do not know where the original is, but on the top it has Thomas BEACH, but on the bottom it states BROCK. Many such errors were made when the records were copied."
[14998] Marriage record of Thomas Brock to Nancy Moore of Fayette Co, IN, was incorrectly filed under the surname "Beach". Indiana Magazine of History, Vol. 52, 1956, as well as Index to LDS Temple Records, Salt Lake City, UT show this error.
