There are many questions concerning John J. Dings and the wife that Jennie Patten reported for him, Mary McDougall, supposed to be a daughter of Ronald and Effie McDougall. In 1831, and without mention of Mary, who, if she was indeed his wife, must have been dead by then, John sold a part of lot 75, about 36 acres, to Alexander R. and John McDougall. However, it is far from clear that this transaction had anything to do with the residual property from Ronald and Effie McDougall. The Dings genealogy does not seem to know about John J. Dings and his wife Mary McDougall, and we found little substantial information about either of them. The closest thing to evidence of their marriage is the burials in the McEacheron Cemetery (also known as Cossayuna Lake Cemetery), Mary Dings, wife of John I., died 26 mar 1830, age 52 years (however, Asa Fitch's notes on that cemetery, in published form in the "Fitch Gazetteer", give her age as 51). For lack of any better source, we tentatively accept this information, which is at least consistent with John J. Dings appearing without a wife in the deed of 1831.
However, in Washington Co., NY Deeds, Liber XX, pp. 352-354, we found Polly Lylliana ? Scott, widow, Henry Scott and Hannah his wife, Eunice Scott, John J. Dings and Sarah his wife, being the widow and heirs of Noah Scott late of the town of Hebron, selling to William Powell, 28 mar 1839, for 15 acres of land in Hebron. We found no indication that there might be two men called John J. Dings in this area, so by 1839, the wife of John J. Dings was apparently Sarah Scott. An earlier deed, Liber K, pp. 169-171, involves Peter Dings and his wife Jane, and John J. Dings (no wife mentioned, so he was unmarried at that time) of the town of Argyle, farmers, selling to John Hill of Argyle, property in farm lot 85 of the Argyle Patent, 16 jan 1810. They (as Peter Dings and John Dings Junior) had obtained that property from Jacob Dings of Argyle, yeoman, and his wife Margaret, by a sale on 26 may 1808 (Liber I, pp. 87-89). We believe this establishes that John J. Dings was in fact the second of the sons named John of Jacob Dings. Jacob's wife had been Elizabeth Knickerbocker, but it is clear from the record that he must have remarried after the death of Elizabeth at some point. Also, from the known baptisms of the children of Jacob and Elizabeth at the Dutch Reformed Churches at Mount Ross and Claverack, we can identify Peter as the one baptised 21 jun 1773 and John (junior) as the second John (the first was a Johannes Adam, baptism apparently lost, and later known as Adam I. Dings), baptised 20 mar 1782.
There are US census entries for a John Dings in Argyle in 1810 (John A. Dings), 1820 (John Dings), and 1830 (John Dings), the last two listed near Duncan R. McDougall. While the one for 1810 could conceivably be someone else, the entries for 1820 and 1830 suggest a man born in the 1770's, a wife of about the same age, and a much older woman born in the 1730's. In 1820, there are a male 10-16 and a female 0-10, suggesting that there may have been children, but there is as yet no evidence that either of them survived past 1830.

According to LDS Ancestral File, son of Jacob Dings and Lisabeth Knickerbocker. Source lists marriage to Jane McDougall, but shows no descendants.
[7183] date cut off in MS of Jennie M. Patten. Peter was son of Jacob and Eliz. Knickerbocker Dings of Argyle, NY. Likely Peter was brother of Jacob J. Dings who m. Jane's cousin Mary McDougall.

Dave King, of Bourbonnais, IL, has suggested that she might have remarried to Andrew Purcell. The latter couple settled in Madison Co., Iowa. Their tombstone in North McDonbald Cemetery gives the following dates: Andrew Purcell d. 02 mar 1891, age 93 years, 2 months, 3 days (yielding a computed birth date of 27 dec 1797), Mary A. Purcell d. 30 apr 1909, age 85 years, 8 months (computed birth date of 30 aug 1823). The picture of the gravestone on the internet is accompanied by a caption that gives Mary's maiden name as Doak. Andrew's estate packet is no. 1079 in the Madison Co., Iowa probate court. Two marriages of Laura, a daughter of this couple, give the name of the wife of Andrew Purcell as Mary Doak or Doke, as does the death record of another daughter, Ellen. However, the marriage itself has not been located, either under Doak or Uran.
Dave eventually found the marriage, transcribed as Andrew Pensal and Maryan Unes! The 1860 census listing for the Andrew Purcell family (Warren Co., Iowa) leaves no reasonable doubt: the household includes Hariet M. Uran, age 10, born in Illinois, in addition to three Purcell children born after 1853.
