By 1579, he was Sr. d'Echandens and councillor at Bern. In 1580, he entered military service against the Turks, then settled in Fribourg, where he converted to Catholicism and took the given names "Peter Jakob". He was bourgeois de Fribourg in 1586.

Secretary of Bern, he was one of the negotiators for the peace treaty between Savoie and Valais in 1505, and negotiator in 1515 for the treaty between François I of France and the Swiss Confederation.
The von Roth genealogies at the Burgerbibliothek of Bern show Niklaus Schaller and Elsbeth von Diesbach as the parents of the second wife of Antoine Gachet.
