There are at least five documents pertaining to his testament, not all of them completely copied and deciphered. Images of these documents and additional information about the current state of research can be found on this web page: www.realmac.info/bachoffen.htm. In the course of these documents and others from the Protocolls of the Chancelry of Bischwiller, it is clear that he is called Abraham Dufour when the record is written in French, and, usually, Abraham Bachoffen when it is written in German. The occurrence of the names of witnesses and relatives make it clear that we are indeed dealing with the same Abraham in all cases. One example that proves the equivalency of the names is an original testament in French , 10 apr 1682, by Susanne Mercier, widow of Claude Ribelet, of which one of the witnesses is "Abraham Dufour", who makes his mark (AB, not AD!). Later, 26 jun 1684, the same testament was copied into the Protocoll of the Chancelry of Bischwiller, in German. At the end, the names of the same signers are given, except that Abraham is now called Bachoffen.
The documents that have been discovered are from the registers or Protocolls of the Chancelry of Bischwiller, now at the Archives Départementales de Bas-Rhin (ADBR) in Strasbourg, France, in a box labeled 6E5.2/166:
These documents seem to confirm several points: First, Abraham's own children by his two wives are not mentioned and are presumed to have died before 1684 without issue. Second, the siblings attributed to Abraham in the genealogies of the minister Poulet are confirmed, with the addition of a second sister Anna. Abraham's father is not named, so Poulet must have had additional sources. Third, the equivalence of Bachoffen and Dufour in Bischwiller is clearly demonstrated. Fourth, the origin of the family in Westrich, a region to the west of Alsace but whose boundaries are difficult to define, is stated directly, a fact not found in the Poulet genealogies. Evidently the search for the origins of the Bachoffen family must now move into "Westrich", and most likely to a Protestant parish about 1600.
The part of France often known today as Westrich is centered approximately at Sarralbe, in the Département of Moselle. There are only a few surviving church records of any denomination from this area for the period when Abraham Bachoffen would have lived there. The few survivals include protestant records from Fénétrange, Mittersheim, and Hangviller, plausibly near enough to be called Westrich, plus the voluminous registers of Metz (probably not considered part of Westrich during the period of interest to us). So far, we have found no mention of this family in those records. Internet sources, not yet verified, tell us that Abraham's sister Judith and her husband lived at Kirberg, near Fénétrange, until they moved to Bischwiller about 1650, along with other families displaced by political developments in Lorraine. Even if this migration scenario is correct, there must be more to the story, since Abraham Bachoffen and his wife Jeanne Luroth (from a family that seems to have followed a different path to Bischwiller) baptised a daughter Anne Marie in the Eglise Réformée in 1645. It was not the case that the entire extended family moved to Bischwiller at the same time.
(Where is Westrich? One list of the "principal towns" mentioned by Goethe: Ses bourgs les plus importants étaient, à l'époque de Goethe qui en parle dans son ouvrage "Dichtung und Warheit" ( Fiction ou réalité) en 1770: Saarbrücken, Sarrebourg, Fénétrange, Sarrewerden, Sarre-Union, Sarralbe, Sarreguemines, Sarrelouis, Blâmont, Badonviller, Faulquemont, Morhange, Phalsbourg, Bitche, Landstuhl,... pour ne citer que les plus importants. Another explanation is that it is the area to the east of the Moselle (river) and west of the Vosges (hills).)
Internet sources also provide a possible connection between the Abraham and the "Nivard" family. Abraham's sister Judith "DuFour" had married Jean Vautrin; their last child Jean Pierre is supposed to have been born at Bischwiller 18 nov 1657 (only the records of the Eglise Réformée go back that far) and married as his first wife Elizabeth Nivard. Elizabeth could easily have been the one who was baptised in the Eglise Réformée of Bischwiller 23 dec 1659, daughter of Nicolas Nivard and Jeanne Paris.

Following Poulet's genealogical table of 1753, we assign her as another daughter of Jacob Bachoffen. She is apparently the Marie daughter of Jacob du Four who appeared as a sponsor for a baptism at the French church in Bischwiller, 07 feb 1683. She may be the Maria Bachofen who died 24 mar 1723 at Olwisheim, wife of Jacob (illegible) des alter, herrschaftl. Muller. Jacob's surname was apparently indexed as Foltzel, but that reading does not seem plausible.

Her baptism calls her mother Dorothea geb. Lanxin, wife of Joh. Georg Bachofen. In this register, the sponsors signed their names, but many are extremely difficult to read. The father signed Johan Jorg Bachhoffen als Fatder. Also among the sponsors was Carolina, daughter of the organist Nicolas Morgenroth, and thus a cousin of the child.
However, a burial record at St. Michael's Church in Philadelphia is for Christina, daughter of the same parents, and born and baptized at Bischwiller on the same dates, giving the names of her godparents as Christian Eckhard and his wife Christina. The burial record also indicates that "Christina" came to "this land" with her parents in 1750, and that they are George Bachofen, a resident of Germantown, and his wife Susanna.
At the baptism of "Dorothea" on this date in the Lutheran congregation at Bischwiller, the witnesses include Christian Eckhardt (signed Eckart) but do not mention his wife. None of the witnesses is named Dorothea, but there are many baptisms in this congregation where the child's name is not shared by any of the witnesses.

As Esther du Four, daughter of Jacob du Four, miller at Olwisheim, she married Paul Guillemin 18 may 1668 at the Eglise Réformée of Bischwiller. Her death record at Olwisheim calls her Esther Bachofen, wife of "Paul Guilmins des alter" and gives her age as 70 years, 1 month. However, a record with the same information, including the date, is also found at Bischwiller.

The genealogies compiled by the minister Jean François Poulet of the Eglise Réformée of Bischwiller (dated 1753, rubric P4742 in the collections of the Archives of Bas-Rhin, Strasbourg) call him Jacob Dufour (Dufour is the French translation of Bachofen) with dates 1613-1693, implying that Poulet had access to a death record, perhaps even a tombstone. Further, he identifies Jacob's wife Elizabeth as Elizabeth Drouin, married to Jacob "Dufour" at Bischwiller in 1654 in the Eglise Réformée. As a consequence, Poulet realized that Jacob's children, or some of them, must have come from a prior marriage. Poulet, however, seems not to have been aware of the records of this family at Olwisheim, nor of the related records in the German Reformed congregation at Bischwiller. Secondary sources give Eckbolsheim, near Strasbourg, as the source of the death record in 1693 (no such entry found in the records of the Lutheran congregation there). However, there is considerable disagreement among the secondary sources. In a number of cases the secondary sources give exact dates of birth or marriage in a particular parish, but no church records covering those dates seem to exist for those parishes.
There are about 40 mentions of the family name Dufour (du Four) in the records of the French protestant congregation at Bischwiller. The name Dufour does not seem to occur in the records of the two German-speaking congregations. There also seem to be scattered references in other parishes, with the result that at least a few genealogists have called the family "Dufour dit Backofen". One genealogist has even cited an oral tradition that Jacob's father Joseph was a "Huguenot" from the region of Westrich, the area immediately west of the lowlands of Alsace. Jacob and his descendants are well documented in the German Reformed records at Bischwiller, with additional records at Olwisheim (some recorded at the church of Berstett). Poulet gives Jacob a brother Abraham who married Eve Rapinet or Rapinier. Abraham is mentioned several times as Dufour in the French records, and his wife turns up as a witness in 1688 in the German Reformed congregation as Eva wife of Abraham Bachofen.
The marriage record for Jacob "Dufour" and Elizabeth Drouin says Jacob was then living at "Expercé", a name very clearly written but otherwise unknown. The place in question should be close to Bischwiller, and several other passages in the church registers of Bischwiller (notably those of the German Reformed congregation) place him at Olwisheim. Therefore, we would expect that "Expercé" must be in the vicinity of Olwisheim. Working from the idea that "Expercé", like Dufour, might be a translation of a German name, Catherine Minck noticed the tiny village of Weitbruch, about 10 km from Olwisheim. If we take "weit" to mean "far from" or "outer", and "bruch" to mean a "break" or "opening" (rather than the other meaning, a marsh), we could translate into French as "ex" (outside of) and "percé" (from percer, to dig a hole, or to make an opening). The German translation of percer is durchbruchen. Weitbruch is about halfway between Bischwiller and Brumath; Olwisheim is just a few kilometers beyond Brumath, to the south. (The actual derivation of Weitbruch seems to have nothing to do with this meaning, but no other village in the region would give rise to a French translation of "Expercé".)
Confirmation of the parentage of Elisabetha is found in a collection of correspondence and other papers relating to the rights of citizens and immigrants to Bischwiller (the document on microfilm from the Family History Library bears the rubric 5J2/2, apparently from the Archives of Bas-Rhin at Strasbourg) . A petition written from Strasbourg by the seigneur with jurisdiction over Olwisheim, Jacob von Berstett, dated 04 mar 1662, concerns Elisabetha, wife of Jacob Bachoffen, miller at Olwisheim. Elisabetha is identified as the daughter of Hannss "Truing", and it appears that her step-mother had resided in Bischwiller. The step-mother's name is written "Cartrinna", perhaps a misspelling of Catrina. She had died and had left an inheritance to Elisabetha. When the Bachoffen family tried to claim the inheritance, they were required to pay a tax. Von Berstett reminded the authorities in Bischwiller that, in the past, the subjects of the Berstetts should not have been charged any fees in such a situation, and requested that the agreements of the past should be observed. In 1662, the Bachoffen family was still at Olwisheim, if we can judge from the baptisms recorded in that area for their children as late as 1666. While this much is clear, no trace of the supposed inheritance has turned up in the town records of Bischwiller that are now preserved at the Archives of Bas-Rhin in Strasbourg. If, for example, "Cartrinna" had remarried after the death of the elder Jean Drouin (noted as deceased as early as 1648), we might no longer be able to recognize her in the records, because she would appear as the widow or wife of someone else.

At least two other Bachoffen's of his generation are noted in the burial records of Bischwiller after 1710: Esther born about 1645 and Maria born about 1664. He was "the younger" at the time of his marriage in 1679, implying his father was still living. The burial record at Bischwiller calls him "der herrschaftslichen Müller in der sogenanten Kübelmühl" and gives his age as 56 years, 3 months, and 5 days.

Marriage is recorded in the Evangelical Reformed congregation of Bischwiller, without naming the couple's parents. Brother of Johann Peter Bachoffen who married about the same time, and whose marriage record gives his father as Hanss Georg Bachoffen (in the German Reformed congregation). However, his wife came from the Lutheran congregation that used the same church, and about some of his children were baptised in that congregation. So far, there is no record of this family at Bischwiller after 1750. (The sons were baptised in the German Reformed congregation, and the daughters in the Lutheran congregation, the usual arrangement for the protestant congregations at Bischwiller.)
This family apparently emigrated and settled at Philadelphia. FamilySearch.org has several databases consisting of records extracted from unspecified sources, likely church records from Philadelphia, that include death or burial dates for members of this family, along with notations apparently transcribed from the original records indicating that Susanna and at least one of her daughters were born in Bischwiller. The possible sources for these records include Philadelphia church records that have been digitized from microfilm but only accessible through the computers at FamilySearch centers, as well as some microfilms in the Family History Library that have not been digitized, presumably because of contractual obligations.
The death record has been found in the original register of St. Michael's (Lutheran) Church in Philadelphia, FHL microfilm #387894, giving her name as Susanna /diritea Backofen, born 23 dec 1709 at Bischwilr (or perhaps Büschweilr) in Elsas, her father's name Jacob Langs. It further states that she was baptized in the Evengelical and Reformed church.
