It took some time to locate the correct Cornelius. At first, we thought he was the one who appears in some Ohio census records in Adams and Highland Counties, born in Virginia in 1805. The 1850 census listing shows migration from VA to OH occurred about 1834. In same household is Mary Steadman b. 1780 VA, who signed a marriage permission 07 jul 1843 for her son John W. Steadman to marry Eliza Bennett. That would make John W. b. after 1822, which is just possible. Eliza's permission from her father James Bennett is also on file, 25 jul 1843. C. Palmer witnessed the Steadman permission. A deed of 1842 (vol. 23 p. 4) has Cornelius with wife Harriet J. selling 100 acres to Andrew Bradney.
Then we found the father of this Cornelius, also named Cornelius, born in Vermont in 1788 (and thus of a far more appropriate age to be the husband of Anna Smith) and died, as Smith family descendants said, in McLean Co., IL. In 1850, they are in Pike Co., Ohio, where Cornelius was a school teacher, and in 1860 in McLean Co., Illinois. From the 1850 census, it is clear that they had no children from this marriage.
[4904] Based on age 71 years, reported in 1920 census.
