DUTOIT: A Family from Moudon, Switzerland

This brother of Nicod is mentioned in an act of partage 15 may 1568, J. Jaquier, notary, but on 22 oct 1568, when a woodlot owned half by the brothers and half by Roux son of the late Jean Dutoit, was divided, Jean is not mentioned in the beginning of the document, where the parties are named, but farther into the document he is named twice. Thus, there is an error in the documents. Very little is known about him.
It may be significant that the partage of 15 may 1568 gave Jean title to all parcels of land involved in the "disme" of Chavannes that had previously been owned jointly by the five brothers Nicod, Pierre, Jean, François, and Guillaume Dutoit. While this does not rule out the possibility that one or more of the other four brothers also owned parcels of the "disme" individually, analysis of the later holders of the "disme" might reveal desendants of the present Jean Dutoit. The "disme" of Chavannes, known also as the "disme des Dutoit", is documented as early as 1449. It appears to have originated as a feudal tax, in the form of a fraction of the harvest of specified crops, that was given to the Seigneur de Chavannes (in the 15th Century the Seigneurie de Chavannes belonged to the Vidomne of Moudon, later to the de Glane family, the Loys de Villardin family, and eventually to several other families before the extinction of the feudal regime after the revolution of 1798). At some point, the Dutoit family, and perhaps others, seem to have acquired the right to collect the tax on behalf of the Seigneur, and also to keep a portion of the proceeds for themselves. The right to this part of the income from the "disme" was evidently passed to the sons of the Dutoit, but could also be sold to others, with the result that, by the end of the 17th Century, we find frequent references to individuals who owned a "particule" or a tiny fraction of the "disme". If detailed records of the "disme" have survived, they would most likely be found among the "terriers" of Chavannes, which have not yet been investigated.
There are scattered references in the records of the notaries in the early 17th Century of property inherited from the estate of the late "Johannod" Dutoit. Could the present Jean be that Johannod? Arguing against this is the fact that this nickname is applied several times to a brother of Paul Dutoit son of Jaques in the terrier ACV Fn 347, 1595.

A document in the archives of Moudon, dated 1450 and signed by P. Ensis, involves a sale by Jacob Dutoit with his brothers Rolet and Jean to Jacob Malle.
Due to several citations that connect the de Curia or de la Cour family with the sons of Nycodus Dutoit around 1450, with additional later citations, it seems most likely that this is the Johannes de Tecto whose son Petrus had married Agnes, daughter of Johannes de Curia. This Petrus had already died by 1452, and his widow seems to be the Agnes who next married Nicodus Escofferii (modern Escoffier). If this scenario is correct, it might explain why no male descendants of this Johannes de Tecto are mentioned in the terriers Fn 27 (1459) and Fn 323 (1493).

Earliest Jean Dutoit clearly identified in the church registers at Moudon, several of his children married before 1582, when it appears another Jean Dutoit died, and became the next "late Jean Dutoit". Both had sons named Pierre. The confusion is still being untangled!

A number of his children can be identified easily in notarial records from before about 1560. However, the situation by the time the church registers begin at Moudon (1564) is already confusing. Nevertheless, we begin to suspect that he had at least one more son, the Jean Dutoit who was the father of Pierre Dutoit the minister. In 1585, we find both Antoine son of Louis Dutoit (son of the present Jean) and Maurice son of the late Jean Dutoit (perhaps son of the present Jean Dutoit) selling vineyards at La-Tour-de-Peilz to Louis Tappioz of Vevey (his wife was Magdalaine daughter of Eg. Claude Bize of Treytorrens). In the transaction involving Antoine Dutoit, we note that the vineyards are adjacent to those belonging to George Dutoit and his brothers (21 nov 1585). One of those brothers was Maurice, who sells vineyards in approximately the same location on 21 dec 1585. We think it very likely that the property at La-Tour-de-Peilz originally belonged to a common ancestor of Louis and Jean Dutoit, most likely their father, who should thus be the present Jean Dutoit.
No mention of his estate has been found so far. We would have to depend on transactions among his heirs to discover with certainty whether Jean father of the minister Pierre Dutoit really belongs here.
In the earliest surviving notarial records at Oron (those of Claude Blanc, 1555-1567), we find Louis "du theyct" of Vuarmarens who is the son of Jean Dutheyct. Louis's brother Claude is already deceased (1556), and has a brother Antoine who resides at Palézieux. It certainly appears that this is the same family discussed here. The father, Jean Dutheyct, seems still to be alive 17 nov 1556 and again in 1558 and 1559. The first document in this series showing that Jean the father of Louis Dutoit has died is dated 05 feb 1561 (ACV DO 2/2). These records need to be compared with other of other notaries from Moudon and Vevey to be sure that they all concern the same Dutoit family.

Jean DUTOIT (ID #I6260)

Appears in several notarial records at Vevey, e.g. those of Clement Butty, about 1600. Unless there are two "late Rod Dutoit's" of Chavannes-sus-Moudon at that period, this Jean should be the brother of the Abraham Dutoit of Vevey. He is also mentioned in the terriers ACV Fn 347 and 349, with his brothers Abraham, Pauloz, and Nicod, in the course of which reference is made to an "abbergement" to which he and his brother Abraham were parties, recorded by Eg. Michiel Frossard 17 oct 1592.
