Presumed to be the Barbille Gachet who married Joseph Portefaix at Combremont-le-Grand in 1673. The record is strangely written: "Vertueux et Prudent Joseph Portefaix", then a sign corresponding to a notation below the record that says "D'Yverdon et de Payerne", then the record continues "et Vertueuse Damoiselle Barbille Gachet." We interpret this to mean Portefaix was from Yverdon and Gachet from Payerne, since the Portefaix family, from the Dauphiné, had acquired citizenship at Yverdon but not at Payerne.

It is now certain that there were two men of this name, one the son of Roletus, the other the son of Johannes, one of two sons of Roletus of that name. We are not entirely certain which Bartholomeus is intended in some of the citations listed here. It is possible, therefore, that the children and wife that we list here actually belong to the younger Bartholomeus.
The elder Bartholomeus, definitely the son of Roletus, appears with his brother Johannes (or one of them) in the terrier ACV Fl 395, on 03 feb 1459. There is no indication that Bartholomeus required the approval of his brother, so we may assume that he had reached the age of 25, and thus was born no later than 1434.
He is mentioned in several sources after his death, but usually he is a figure of the indefinite past. One exception is a terrier (ACV FL 14, dating from about 1534) for the clergy of Avenches that includes brief descriptions of several properties belonging to the "heirs" of Bartholomeus Gaschet, as well as one attributed to his "wife" Margareta, daughter of Johannes ...lles". Her family name is not written clearly, and we found no similar name in the index of this terrier. The phraseology might mean that Margareta was still alive about 1534, but it could also mean that the property had come to the heirs of Bartholomé by inheritance from their mother. However, another wife of Bartholomeus is clearly identified in the terrier AEF Grosse St. Aubin 22, in a reconnaissance dated 15 apr 1518 (fol. 126v). In the description of the first property in this reconnaissance, for property of Vuilliermus son of Uldrisetus Perriard and Girardus Perriard, brother of Uldrisetus, we read the following history: "de bonis antiquitus recognitis per Ysabellam uxorum Nycodi Ramuz filiam Nycodi Bessonet Johanni Mazon, et successive Marie filie dicti Johannis Mazon uxori dicti Bartholomei Gachet per Uldrisetum Perriard patrem mis dicti confitentis filii quondam Johannis Perriard et Anthonie eius consortis filie quondam Jaqueti Ramuz". That is, "for property recognized in the past by Ysabella wife of Nycous Ramus daughter of Nycodus Bessonet to (or in favor of) Johannes Mazon, and next to (or in favor of) Maria, wife of the said Bartholomeus Gachet, by Uldrisetus Perriard, my father, son of the late Johannes Perriard and of Antonia his wife, daughter of the late Jaquetus Ramuz". The name Mazon may be the same as Maczon, at Payerne.
The identity of Margareta was discovered in a donation by Anthonius de Adventhica to the clergy of Avenches, 12 jan 1489 (ACV IB 1:29, notary Petrus de Dompnopetro), in which Anthonius recounts how these properties came into his hands. Among them is a group of properties and censes that had been sold by his father to Johannes Gachet, brother of Bartholomeus, on which Bartholomeus owed the censes. Some of these, if not all, had previously been held by Johannes Ancelles, and then by his daughter Margareta, wife of Bartholomeus. In this sale, recorded 25 apr 1466 by Girardus Hugoneti, notary of Estavayer, the right of repurchase was evidently retained by the elder Anthonius, and so the younger Anthonius still held the rights of "reachept", which could be donated, transferred, or sold, with the option to exercise these rights. The notary Girardus Hugoneti (or Hugonet) had married a Gachet as well, see his entry in the present database. The donation to the clergy of Avenches in 1489 explains why the heirs of Bartholomeus would still owe censes to the clergy of Avenches in 1534.
Bartholomeus was alive for the terrier Fl 402 (fol. 588, 12 jan 1496; this volume is a continuation of the terrier Fl 400, dating from 1491) and he was already dead by 1526 (Fl 460, terrier for the Fivvaz brothers). He was also alive and an adult 24 nov 1486 for the terrier Fl 399 (fol. 265) for the Cure de Bellerive (church of St. Veran). The terrier that immediately preceded Fl 399 for the holdings of the church of St. Veran of Bellerive was compiled in 1471 (Fl 398), where the corresponding reconnaissance seems to be the one for Johannes filius Roleti Gachet. The reconnaissance of 1486 says that the property was previously recognized by Johannes Gachet his brother, in the names of himself and of his other brother Petrus, now deceased. From this, we presume that it was the present Bartholomeus who was intended, and that he was therefore still alive in 1486.
The terrier Fl 460 (fol. 23 ff) identifies three of his daughters, Claudia (already deceased as of 1526, she had married Petrus Jaccollet, and her daughter Claudia Jaccollet had already married Goddefroy Griset and produced a son Vuilliermus—thus, we should place the birth of Claudia, daughter of Bartholomeus, about 40 years or more in the past, thus likely before 1486), Margareta (living, and married to discret Johannes Jaccollet of Estavayer), and Jaqueta (living, and married to Guidonus Jaccollet of Autavaux). The same reconnaissance (fol. 26v) also refers to property that had been held by Francesia, daughter of Johannes Gachet of Le Landeron son of Bartholomeus son of Johannes son of Roletus Gachet. Assuming that this reconnaissance had no reason to mention both of the men named Bartholomeus, it may be that this one pertains to the younger Bartholomeus only.
A register of the notary Anthoine Perrin of Avenches, covering approximately the years 1485-1511, contains several mentions of Bartholomeus Gachet. On fol. 55, Bartholomeus purchased property from Alexia widow of the late Anthonius Falliobaz (?) alias Gollion. On fol. 60, 07 may 1493, Johannes Bovet de Juressyn recognizes a debt to Bartholomeus. On fol. 102, 01 jul 1499, Bartholomeus Gaschet of Villard en Vuillie sells property to Petrus Bergey. Finally, on fol. 127v, die festi Sancti Thomae (21 dec) 1503, we find a mention of Aymon, nepoti quondam Bartholomei Gaschet, thus fixing the death of Bartholomeus in a period of about three years. However, this could easily refer to the younger man.
The name Bartholomeus Gaschet appears in a list of militia compiled the Sunday before the feast of St. Matthew, 1474, at Estavayer, during preparations for the impending siege of the city, which followed the disastrous battle of Morat in 1475. There is also a Petrus Gaschet in another company of soldiers on the same list. See Annales d'Estavayer, by Dom Jacques Philippe Grangier, edition of 1905, edited by Ernest Grangier and F. Brülhart, pp. 240-241.
The three daughters of Bartholomeus son of Roletus Gachet are again mentioned in the terrier AEG Gross St. Aubin 22, compiled in 1516 by Petrus de Molendino specifically for the heirs of Johannes and Bartholomeus, sons of Roletus Gachet. Specifically, the various tenants or "reconnaissants" were to pay annual "censes", of which half went to "Margarete uxoris providi viri Johannis Jaccolleti burgensis Staviaci, Jaquete uxoris Discreti viri Guydonis filii Girardi Jaccollet de Autavoulx, et Glaude uxoris egregii viri Goddofredi Griseti burgensis Staviaci filie honesti viri Petri Jaccollet et quondam Glaudie eius conjugis (elsewhere she is described as the first wife of Petrus Jaccollet) sororum filiarum quondam Bartholomei filii quondam Roleti Gachet de Villard en Vuilliez". Thus, as of 1516, Margareta and Jaqueta were still alive. There is at least one passage in this "grosse" that appears to name previous terriers: on fol. 101, we find a reconnaissance "de bonis alias dicto Bartholomeo Gachet in manibus Petri Garineti notarii Cudriffini recognitis per Johannem Bardet et successive eidem Bartholomeo recognitis per Johannem Bardet patrem nostrum dictorum confitentes recognitis in manibus Andree de Arsina notarii Staviaci." The previous reconnaissances for the property held by the Gachet heirs in 1516 were thus recorded, either in the registers of the notaries, or in terriers, compiled first by Petrus Garinet of Cudrefin, and then by Andreas de Arsina of Estavayer (known to have been a notary from 1479 until 1540, and secretary of the city council of Estavayer in 1482). Can these sources be identified? There is a fragment of a terrier ACV Fm 102 (apparently only fol. 151-163 survive) for which the known commissaires are Johannes Garineti, Andreas de Arsina, and Petrus de Arsina, containing reconnaissances with various dates from 1457 to 1498, for property subject to the Confrérie du Saint Esprit de Grandcour. There are several other fragments, various dates, with similar descriptions, at the ACV. The catalogue of the AEF does not yet show the names of the commissaires or the seigneurs for the terriers in its catalogue, but there are two previous "grosses" for Saint Aubin, numbered 23 (1483) and 24 (1448). The same Gross St.Aubin 22 also mentions that some property of Bartholomeus Gachet was subject to "religiosus conventus Staviaci", meaning presumably the convent of the Domincans at Estavayer, for which at least two other "Grosses" from the mid-15th Century are in the collections of the AEF.
In the genealogies compiled by Hubert de Vevey, the one designated "Pontherose II" d'Estavayer contains some interesting information. This family is know as des Graz or de Gradibus alias Pontherose. A member of this family, Alexandre des Graz or de Gradibus alias Pontherousa, had married Marie Mascon or Maczon, daughter of Johannes Mascon or Maczon, who made his testament 15 nov 1452 at Estavayer (Archives de la ville d'Estavayer, parchemins XV 357, not yet examined), at which time Maria had already married Alexander de Gradibus. The same Marie Maczon made a reconnaissance for property at Estavayer in 1465 (AEF Grosses d'Estavayer 116, fol. 113v). Later, in AEF Grosses d'Estavayer 104, fol. 110, a reconnaissance dated 05 jan 1522 shows that Marie remarried to Bartholomeus Gachet.
The citations discussed above prove that his wife during the period 1452 to at least 19 nov 1466 was Maria, and that the other wife, Margareta, was his wife at some point prior to 25 apr 1466. Therefore, we show Margareta as the first wife and Maria as the second, but there is still nothing that establishes which children came from which marriage, apart from the vague notation in FL 14, which suggests that at least some of them should logically be the children of Margareta.

Her husband Bendich de Praromon donzel de Fribourg acknowledged receipt of the marriage settlement for his wife Catherine, from her brothers Jean Amey and François Gachet of Payerne, on 01 aug 1553 (Aymé Chuard, notary at Payerne). It is now clear that the occasion for this settlement was the death of Catherine's mother earlier in 1553. There is some confusion over whether she later married one of the Claude Fivaz.

Last of the Gachet family at Payerne. After her death, the private chapel of the Gachet family in the parish church of Payerne became the property of the commune, and in 1818 it was "transformed" (apparently obliterating the old inscriptions of the Gachet tombs) to hold the presumed remains of Queen Berthe of Burgundy, which had just been discovered in the Abbey of Payerne by Col. de Dompierre.
[6201] She was catechumen at Payerne in 1746. Her baptism has not been located, but the age at first communion is normally about 15-16.

Seemingly one of the coheirs of Denise Regnault, late wife of Jean Gachet, in a document of 30 aug 1583, Jean Ballif, notary. He is not mentioned in this family by Petitpierre (Patrie Neuchateloise, 1935), and nothing else is known about him. A Claude Gachet is cited as a member of the council of Payerne in 1543, but it does not seem likely that this is the same person.
It is possible that the Claude Gachet intended in the document of 1583 is not a coheir of Denis Regnauld through her second husband Jean Gachet, but rather through her first husband, George Muriset. Denise's daughter Antheine Muriset married Petermand Gachet, who had a son Claude.

Identified as the son of the late N. Pettermand Gachet in a settlement of 800 florins for his marriage to Françoise Nible, Jean Marcuard, notary at Payerne 12 mar 1582 (ACV DP 62/2). He was still a minor 18 dec 1574 when his uncle Noble Jean Gachet, conseiller de Payerne, is identified as his guardian (Jean Amey Bondu, notary).
He gave Jaques Bovard of La Crausaz power of attorney to sell some of his property, as well as some belonging to Magdeleyne daughter of the late François Gachet, to François Destraz of Lutry, 06 feb 1586 (Claude de Place, notary, ACV DI 48/16, fol. 86).

He was at the University of Basel in 1537, "Daniel Gazetus, Paterniacensis". The year before, a "Joannes Gachzedt Bernas" was admitted at Basel, perhaps Daniel's brother, or perhaps someone from the Gatschi/Gatschen family at Erlach or Ins. It is not clear whether the rector at Basel would have used "Bernas" in a generic sense to indicate someone from the territories then controlled by Bern (including the newly-occupied Pays de Vaud), rather than a citizen of the city of Bern.
Married 15 dec 1560 at Payerne, according to the family book of his brother Niklaus, but the name of his wife was not given. We found her in the records of Jean Marcuard, notary at Payerne, in a transaction regarding their marriage settlement, 02 may 1569. The marriage settlement was received in thirds, "soyt en sommes pecuniayres que aultres choses." He was Avoyer of Payerne 1578-1583. The surname of his second wife is still unknown.
An argument arose regarding his wife's inheritance, recorded by Jean Marcuard, notary at Payerne (ACV DP 62/1, this section unpaged, 22 sep 1573):

Even though the account of von Roth says David married Benedicta Wysshahn, the death date given by Niklaus Gatschet in his family book seems to preclude such a marriage.
His uncle Nyclaus Gaschet sold property at Cully on his behalf 11 nov 1580 (Simon Pierre Chalon, notary, ACV DI 22/2, fol. 148v-151v) to Noble Anthoyne Chalon.

Banneret of Payerne 1659-1660 and Avoyer 1660 -1678. Also a notary. Although he would have been very young for marriage, he must be the one who married Jeanne Dessibord in 1640. He may also have been the David Gachet who married Anne Comte in 1638. The church records of Payerne appear to be incomplete in this period, or else this family baptised their children in another parish. The only other solution would be that there was a second, later Jeanne Dessibord who also married an older David Gachet that has so far escaped detection, a possibility we consider unlikely. It is possible that this is the same David who married Anne Comte, who died soon after, and whose father settled with David Gachet regarding restitution of her dowry in 1642. A marriage at age 15 would probably not be impossible, but it would be extremely unusual at that time. Such a marriage would be slightly more likely if his father had already died, since his family would try to get as many of the children as possible out of the household, and he would have at least limited access to the proceeds of his father's estate.
There is a settlement relating to the dowry after the death of Anne Comte, daughter of Pierre, wife of David Gachet, 30 nov 1642 (Samuel Marcuard, notary at Payerne, ACV DP 63/1). The present David had already remarried, if his first wife was indeed Anne Comte. In that case he would have been exceptionally young, and his wife several years his senior.
He died before 11 may 1680, when his son Noble David Gachet sold property to Gabriel Marcuard in the name of his son Jean Marcuard whose mother was the late Salomé de Trey, with the advice of Madame de Trey, Gabriel's mother-in-law. The property was "tout son tenement de la Breytonneyre", "le tout en la mesme forme que feu d'heureuse memoire Monsr. L'Advoyer Gachet l'a heu possedé", for the price of 50 écus. The document, recorded by Samuel Comte, notary at Payerne (ACV DP 21/1), clearly says David Gachet, but the Marcuard genealogy says the seller in this transaction was Daniel Gachet.
We might wonder, in fact, if we have correctly identified his baptism. Could it be that the one we read as David should actually be Daniel, and vice versa? If that were the case, he would now be of a reasonable age to have married first Anne Comte, then Jeanne Dessibord, and finally Marie du Moulin.
[14827] Date of contract, Samuel Marcuard notary.

He was Avoyer of Payerne on several occasions (alternating with a member of the Rouge family), 1695-1698, 1701-1704, 1707-1710, 1713-1716, and 1719-1722. He was also banneret of Payerne 1693-1695. Identified as the son of the late Advoyer in a document dated 05 feb 1679, Samuel Golliez, notary at Payerne (ACV DP 47/2). This document says that David Conte (b. 1627, later Avoyer) was his god-father.
Through his wife, he was one of the heirs to the Logis de l'Ours at Payerne. Transactions among the heirs are found in the registers of several notaries.
