The parentage of Charles has not been established. We once thought he might be another son of Etienne Riou and Isabeau Jarjat, but Charles is identified as "Riou de Laroue", a name associated with St. Voy in Velay rather than the area around Vernoux.
Of the children that might be attributed to Charles, only Marie is certain. Another three belong together, but we lack direct evidence that their father was Charles. So far, none of the others has surfaced in church records anywhere in Vivarais, though there are still more registers that need to be studied, particuarly the Catholic registers that might contain abjurations. This Charles may be the one named in connection with the Audoyer affair of 1683 (noted as "greffier", a plausible alternative to "juge"), and thus probably closely related to the 4 Riou brothers who were also involved in this affair.
Marie's marriage was attended not only by her father, but by her first cousin Pierre Riou, and the coincidence of names with the participants in the affair of 1683 suggests a connection of some sort. Or, it may simply reflect the fact that certain baptismal names, such as Matthieu, were extremely common in this area.
Arnaud indicates that Charles Riou lost his life in the same ambush that resulted in the capture of the minister Audoyer, 01 oct 1683. Also involved were "the two La Brune brothers", whom we identify as Riou dit LaBrune, based on a number of details in the story. However, the documentation supporting this story seems not to be an eye-witness account (Anne Homel, "Histoire de la mort et du martyre de M. Homel", published in the Bullétin de la Société de l'histoire du protestanisme français, vol. 9, pp. 312-330). The story preserved by Anne Homel, evidently dictated long after the events, could easily be inaccurate in details other than those relating to the La Brune brothers. The story of the incident should be preserved in official records; we noticed a footnote at the end of Arnaud's account that includes a reference the famous "Série TT" of the French National Archives (dossiers 355 and 356), in which corroboration might be sought. There is also one reference to a Charles Riou from Velay on the assistance rolls at Frankfurt-am-Main (originals not examined, reference from "La Base de Données du Refuge Huguenot") on the internet.
It is possible that the records will eventually be found to refer to two or more men bearing the name Charles Riou. The Charles whose daughter Marie married Mathieu Johannot in 1673 is likely not the son of Etienne, and may not be the one involved in the Audoyer affair.
[3222] The Montgiraud in question is undoubtedly the hamlet of Montgiraud near Le Mazet-St. Voy, but that it ever was a barony has not been confirmed.
[3223] Arnaud's Histoire des protestants du Vivarais et du Velay says (vol. 1, p. 503) that Charles Riou, traveling with the minister Pierre Audoyer, the 2 La Brune brothers, and others, was killed in an ambush.

La France Moderne notes the origins of this family in "La Roue, paroisse de St.-Voy-en-Velay", evidently now Le Mazet-St.-Voy. Most of the other "en Velay" towns are in Haute-Lorraine (including St-Didier-en-Velay, one possible location for the elusive Pierre Johannot after he left Annonay). There are a number of Riou families in the records of Chalencon, Ardèche, including twin sons of Jaques Cros and Isabeau Riou. It is not known if she reached Switzerland.

The data from that source, giving the age and circumstances of birth, preclude the hypothesis that the Etienne Riou who married Madelaine Foubert was the same person; that connection to our Riou family remains to be explained. The published account makes a serious error in the way it connects the Johannot family, clarified by the will of Etienne's uncle Matthieu Riou alias La Brune.

"In the Name of God Amen, I Stephen Riou Merchant living in the parish of Saint Bartholomew near the Royal Exchange London considering the frailty and uncertainty of human life do make my Last Will and Testament in manner following, ffirst I recommend my soul to God its Creator through Jesus Christ my saviour who has redeemed it by his precious Blood and by the Merits of which I hope for the remission of all my sins and as to my Body I order the same to be buried in the Parish Church of Enfield in a decent manner at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named upon Condition however that all my ffuneral Expences shall not exceed the sum of ffifty pounds sterling. As to my Worldly Goods I dispose thereof in manner following, I give and Bequeath to the poor of the ffrench Church scituate in Threadneedle Street London one hundred pounds sterling.
