There is a William Whiteside in the 1800 census of Orange Co., NY, plausibly his father. Perhaps the William Whitesides on 1808 tax list of Sycamore Tp. Hamilton Co., OH along with James is the same person, explaining absence of further records in Orange Co., NY. Also a marriage of Mary Whitesides age 20 to Nathaniel Terwilliger age 60 (04? jul 1807, Hamilton Co., OH, Burress, Early Records p. 202), and a Mrs. Margaret Whitesides in congregation of Hopewell Presbyterian Church 01 oct 1824 - ?? sep 1826.
The 1810 census of Orange Co. NY shows a John Whiteside with a wife and 5 children. This is the same family identified in the lists of resident aliens made in October, 1812, showing John Whiteside, farmer, age 48 with wife and 5 children, in the US for the last 10 years, residing at Montgomery, Orange Co. Probably the same family is the one who arrived from Ireland in 1803 (wife Ann) in Brian Mitchell's compilation, Irish Passenger Lists 1803-1806 (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1995). Clearly, this John is not directly connected with our family, but he might be a relative.
The recorded will of James Whiteside was among the volumes lost during a fire at the Hamilton County Courthouse in 1884, but the original will and the papers related to its probate survived. They were then re-recorded into what is now the Will Record, volume 8, as described in that volume on pages 139-140:
[Will Record 8, pp. 139-140, Hamilton Co., Ohio, Re-recorded will of James Whiteside, deceased.]
It appears to the Probate Court that on the 18th day of October A.D. 1847 the last Will and Testament of James Whiteside deceased was duly admitted to Probate and Record in the Court of Common Pleas of Hamilton County Ohio and that the Record of said Will was afterwards by law transferred to the Probate Court of said County and that the original Record of said Will and the Probate thereof upon the Record and Journal of said Court were destroyed in the burning of the Court House on March 29th A.D. 1884 but that the original Will and the testimony of the witnesses thereto were preserved, it is now ordered by the Probate Court on its own motion that the Record of said Will and the probate thereof be and the same is hereby restored from the said original Will and Testimony as provided by the Statute in the words and figures following to wit: State of Ohio Hamilton County S.S. Hamilton Common Pleas. Be it remembers that on the day and year aforesaid the last Will and Testament of James Whiteside late of this County deceased was this day duly presented to the Court for Probate and Record clothed in the words and figures following to wit: In the name of the Benevolent father of all, I James Whiteside of the County of Hamilton and State of Ohio do make and publish this my last Will and Testament. 1. It is my will that my just depts and charge be paid out of my Estate. 2. I give and devise to Robert Whiteside my Son five dollars. 3. I give and devise to my Son Isaac Whiteside five dollars. 4. That I give and bequeath of my daughter Mariah McDonold two hundred dollars. 5. That I give and bequeath Louiza Cross five dollars. 6. That I give and bequeath to Caroline Buchark twenty five dollars. 7. And Jane Hand one hundred and fifty dollars. 8. And my Grandson son of Nancy Whitside Benjamin Franklin Whiteside I give and devise two hundred dollars, and when eche of my hears receives what is alowed them in my last Will and Testament what Remens of my Estate is to be Equely divided and Eche one to have a Equel share. I do hereby nominate and apoint Charles C. Cross and James Terwilleger Executors of this my last Will and Testament hereby authoresing and Inpowring them to Compromis against to have and discharg in Mannor as they think proper the depts and Clame due mey. I do hereby Revok all other wills by Me made heretofore. In testimony wharefor I hereunto set my hand and seal the Second day of June one thousand Eight hundred and forty six James Whiteside signed and acknowledged by said James Whiteside his last Will and Testament in our presence. Witnesses Jonithan T. Martin, Robt. Martin. Thereupon on the same day Jonathin Martin and Robert Martin the subscribing witnesses to the last Will and Testament of James Whiteside deceased personally appeared in open Court and were duly sworn and examined according to law touching the due execution of said Will and their testimony therein was reduced to writing and filed in manner and form following to wit: The State of Ohio Hamilton County S.S. Hamilton Common Pleas. Probate of the last Will of James Whiteside deceased presented on the 13th day of October A.D. 1847. Personally appeared in open Court Jonithan Martin and Robert Martin the subscribing witnesses of the last Will and Testament of James Whiteside deceased who being duly sworn according to law to speak the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth in relation to the execution of the said will, depose and say that there were present at the making of said will and at the request of the deceased subscribed their names to said will as witnesses in the presence of the deceased and of each other; that they saw the said James Whiteside deceased sign and seal the said Will and heard him acknowledge the same to be his last Will and Testament; that the said James Whiteside was at the time of making signing and sealing said Will, of legal age and of sound mind and memory and under no undue or unlawful restraint whatsoever. Robert Martin, Jonithan T. Martin sworn to and subscribed in open Court this 13 day of October A.D. 1847, E. C. Roll Clerk, H. C. C. P. by Wm. Piatt D. Now here to wit: on the same day our said Court made an order herein as follows: In the matter of the last Will and Testament of James Whiteside deceased, the last Will and Testament of James Whiteside late of this County deceased was this day duly presented to the Court for Probate and Record, Whereupon Robert Martin and Jonithan Martin the subscribing witnesses to said Will personally appeared in open Court and were duly sworn and examined according to law and their testimony therein was reduced to writing and filed. It appearing to the Court from the testimony so taken that said Will was duly executed and attested and that the testator at the time of executing the same was of full age sound mind and memory and under no restraint, the Court now admits the said Will to Probate and orders the same together with testimony to be recorded according to the Statute in such case made and provided. It is further ordered by the Court that said Will and the Probate thereof be re-recorded and the same is now done and that said Record have the same force and effect as said original Record. Records of St. Anthony Cem., Sycamore Tp., Hamilton Co., OH, reveal 3 wives for Isaac, with various children. There are likely others! However, a marriage record for Jane Whiteside and Samuel R. Hand, 27 jul 1841, has also surfaced. There is no direct evidence that either one of these belongs here. Samuel Hand 1850 census Colerain Tp. has wife Malinda!

Death certificate shows she died at Kansas City General Hospital 30 mar 1934, name recorded as Jessie Jewell, widow, born 18 oct 1890, age 43 years, 5 months, 12 days, daughter of George Whiteside and Addie Beckman. The informant was Miss Letha Jewell. However, the 1900 census shows she was born in October, 1885, and was then age 14. The license for her first marriage states that she was over the age of 18, as of 12 apr 1905. In the 1910 census (Coffeyville, Montgomery Co., Kansas), she and her husband are both 23 years old, implying a birth date in 1886-1887.
Her daughter Letha became known as Letha Jewell, taking her step-father's name. This name change seems not to have been noticed by some descendants, and Letha appears in a pedigree on MyHeritage.com as a daughter of Frank F. Jewell.

We had thought this child was a son, but the death certificate, giving parentage as "Lyod" Whiteside and Ida Phillips, is clear, Jessie had been married to Harry Gross and was divorced.
On September 8, 1921, she applied for a passport to travel to Czechoslovakia, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium... (the list is not clearly legible) for study and travel for about 6 months. She gave her occupation as Musician. The application was witnessed by her mother Ida M. Hammon, and they both lived in Dayton, Ohio. She lists her father as Lloyd Whiteside, deceased.

It is possible he went to California after the divorce. There is a Lloyd E. Whiteside, born in Ohio, age 35, carpenter, in the Great Register of San Bernardino Co., California, registered on 02 jul 1888. There are a few references to a Lloyd Whiteside working as a driver (i.e., automobiles) in Stockton, about 1911, but we were unable to locate him in any census or in other records.

There is a marriage record for Mrs. Mattie Hoffman age 27 to James Fields age 54, 15 may 1885, Brown Co., IL. Martha lied a little about her age, this is possibly the same person. However, the next verified marriage lists her as Mrs. Martha E. Hoffman.
There is some confusion about her death and burial. First, there is a tombstone in the Dunkard Cemetery, Concord Tp., Adams Co., Illinois for Harvey H. Hoffman, June 12, 1849 - October 10, 1894. On the same stone, the inscription says "Martha E. his wife, October 29, 1851", and then a cartouche for her death date, left blank. Evidently, the stone was originally intended for Harvey and Martha, but after Harvey's death she remarried twice. Where exactly is her grave?
There is an entry for "Martha Ellen Huffman" in the Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths index on FamilySearch.org, giving the death date of 17 jul 1930, but this entry does not seem to be linked to an official record. There is also a card index of deaths for Adams Co., Illinois, 1877-1990, listing "Martha Ellen Huffman" and the date 07-17-30, again, of uncertain authority. This record corresponds with a record in the Illinois Statewide Death Index 1916-1950 (Illinois State Archives), noting the age as unknown.
In the Concord Cemetery, Adams Co., there is a burial for D. J. Boling, Martha's third husband, but his stone shows that his first wife, Mary F., is buried with him. So far, no death certificate or obituary has been located, so the question remains.
She was alive on April 5, 1930, when she was enumerated in the household of William R. McConnell in Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, as Mattie E. Boling, his mother-in-law, age 78, widowed. At least this record rules out the 1929 death date (no month or day) found in a few internet sources.
An explanation for the lack of a record under the name Boling is found in the Quincy Daily Journal, 22 sep 1922 (Friday): "Daniel J. Boling, aged 71, of Camp Point, took the witness stand Friday morning in the circuit court and testified that his wife, whom he had married in Keokuk in 1912, had refused to live with him since September, 1920. There had been differences between them because she insisted on spending most of her time with her children by two former marriages. Finally they agreed to disagree, and they drew up an agreement to this effect, he to pay her $1,000, after she had told him she would not live with him any longer. She had even refused to make a trip to California with him, he said." A similar account appeared in the Quincy Herald the next day, adding that "the divorce decree of Daniel J. Bolins vs. Martha E. Boling, of Camp Point, was signed by Judge Fred Wolfe, Thursday afternoon." (Daniel J. Boling married again, to Mrs. Laura A. Johnson , license noted in newspapers 08 nov 1923.)
The expected obituary was finally located on the web site of the Quincy Public Library, host to an extensive digitized archives of local newspapers, in the Quincy Herald Whig, 18 jul 1930 (Friday): "Mrs. Martha Ellen Hoffman. Mrs. Martha Ellen Hoffman, 78, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Maude McConnell, 438 North Ninth street, Thursday morning, at 6:15. Mrs. Hoffman was born in Versailles, October 29, 1851, the daughter of Isaac and Georgetta Whiteside. She was married on June 18, 1871, to Harvey H. Hoffman of Kellerville, who was a merchant there for many years. Mr. Hoffman died October 19, 1893. Six children were born to them, of whom four survive, Alva of El Reno, Okla., Omer of Oklahoma City, Harry Hoffman and Mrs. McConnell of Quincy. There are also four brothers, Dave, Charles and Oscar Whiteside of Mt. Sterling, and George Whiteside of Missouri. Mrs. Hoffman was a member of the Madison Park Christian church. Funeral services will be held Saturday in Kellerville, with burial beside her husband in the Dunkard Cemetery."
If seems likely that Martha was indeed buried next to her first husband, but the inscription on his tombstone was never completed.
