Daily Illinois State Register (Springfield, Illinois), 08 feb 1888: in news items from Palmyra, Illinois: "Mr. Fred McCoy is at home for a few days." In the same newspaper, 20 apr 1897, among news items from Palmyra: "Fred McCoy of California, is visiting his father J. W. McCoy."
Found in The Galveston Daily News (Galveston, Texas), 24 feb 1889, among marriage permits issued during the previous week, Fred McCoy and Loula Lee. In the same newspaper, 26 feb 1889, "Married in Alvin. Alvin, Tex., February 25.—Married at 7 p. m. yesterday, at the residence of Mr. Jesse Hobbs, the handsome and popular telegraph operator, Mr. Fred McCoy, and the accomplished Miss Loula Lee, one of Alvin's fairest belles. No cards."
In The Daily Courier (San Bernardino, California), 26 aug 1890, list of arrivals at the St. Charles Hotel, Fred McCoy and wife, from Palmyra, Illinois. In the same newspaper, 17 oct 1890, in an account of the public sale of nearly 7,000 acres of land being developed at the town of Alessandro, near San Bernardino, including an irrigation pipeline nearing completion through the San Timotheo hills, and with a free lunch and music by the Redlands band, and preparations for planting on 700 acres of the Orange Orchard Company, the list of purchasers includes D. M. Whiteside, of Emporia, Kansas, lot 3, block 241, 10 acres, and Fred McCoy, from Cajon, lot 4, block 241, 10 acres. D. M. Whiteside is almost certainly David McCoy Whiteside, Fred's uncle. Fred must have recently settled at Cajon, in the pass above San Bernardino. Also, in the same newspaper, 13 may 1891, among the arrivals at the St. Charles Hotel, Fred McCoy and D. M. Whiteside, from Summit. D. M. Whiteside was reported to have left San Bernardino on the Santa Fe overland (railroad) for Albuquerque on 29 sep 1891.
In the San Francisco Chronicle, 05 may 1896: "VALUE PLACED ON WIFE. TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS THE SUM. Damages Asked by a Los Angeles Husband for the Loss of His Spouse. Special dispatch to the Chronicle. LOS ANGELES, May 4.—A few days ago Fred McCoy, a well-known citizen, brought suit against his wife, Lulu McCoy, for divorce. Lulu was prompt with her answer, which augurs for a lively fight. To-day the cat got out of the bag through a damage suit brought by Fred against F. B. Williams, another well-known citizen, for $25,000, in which he recites that Williams has alienated Lulu's affections from him; that she has thereby left him and refuses to treat him as a husband. The language with which Fred's sympathetic attorney details how this was done is peculiarly distressing. He says: "Said defendant, contriving, wrongfully, wickedly and not having the fear of God before his eyes, and unjustly intending to injure said plaintiff and to deprive him of the comfort, fellowship, society and assistance of his (plaintiff's) wife, Lulu McCoy, did on many divers occasions send to her, said Lulu McCoy, divers letters, with many blandishments and endearing words of love and sympathy, many beguiling promises of help in money and means and with various and many attentions." It is claimed that McCoy has been deprived of Lulu's wifely duties for two years on account of Williams' attentions."
More details turned up in the Los Angeles Herald, 01 may 1896: "SMASHED IN THE JAW. A Railroad Man Punches a Fellow Who Got too Gay. About three months ago Fred McCoy, for several years Southern Pacific agent at Palmdale, purchased a lodging house in this city for his wife, to whom he has been married about seven years. The place was purchased through a real estate agent named F. B. Williams, with an office at 206 South Broadway. McCoy says his wife had been in charge but a short time when he learned that Williams was paying altogether too much attention to her. He claims to have in his possession certain letters written by Williams to Mrs. McCoy, which place the couple in a bad light, so much so that he will institute proceedings for a divorce. Wednesday evening McCoy says that he met Williams at the corner of Second and Broadway and spoke to him, when Williams made a motion as though to draw a gun. At this McCoy landed a heavy blow on the real estate man's jaw, knocking him into the street. Williams fled, but later swore to a complaint alleging battery. McCoy did not wait to be arrested, but called at police headquarters, gave himself up and deposited bail for his appearance Saturday to answer." The next day, 02 may 1896, the same newspaper published the other side of the story: "EXPLANATION OF A SCRAP. Williams Gives His Side of a Disputed Story. F. B. Williams, the real estate agent assaulted by Fred McCoy the other night, the latter accusing him of undue intimacy with his wife, yesterday denied McCoy's imputations in the following words: "I sold to Fred McCoy the lodging house at 455 South Main street January 17. The lodging house was conducted by Mrs. McCoy, who retained me as the agent to look after the property. McCoy was not living with his wife at the time. My relations with Mrs. McCoy were purely of a business nature. I never, in any way, comported myself except as a gentleman should. Wednesday evening at 4 o'clock I drove up to my office at 206 1/2 South Broadway and hitched my horse. I started up stairs when McCoy called me back and said, 'We've had this trouble long enough. Let's call it off and shake hands.' I held out my right, not suspecting treachery, and he grasped it with his left hand and suddenly and unexpectedly struck me in the eye and then ran like a scared hare around the corner of Second street. I then swore out a warrant for his arrest, which McCoy evaded. He afterward surrendered himself. Mrs. McCoy was not anywhere about at the time. His act was cowardly and unprovoked." Williams also says he has four witnesses who will swear that the attack of McCoy was uncalled for and unjustifiable. In addition to the complaint alleging battery, another has been sworn out to cause McCoy to be put under bonds to keep the peace." A notice indicating that a divorce action had been filed on 23 apr 1896 "on the usual statutory grounds" soon appeared. The saga continued on 05 may 1896: "HIS WIFE'S AFFECTIONS. Values at Twenty-Five Thousand Dollars. M'COY SUES FOR DAMAGE. Complaint That Williams Has Alienated His Lulu. Fred McCoy, who a few days ago brought suit against his wife, yesterday morning commenced an action against F. B. Williams, claiming $25,000 damages for the alienation and estrangement of his wife's affections. McCoy's complaint alleges that within the past two years Williams, on many occasions and by divers letters sent to his wife, a with many blandishments and endearing words, also by beguiling promises of help and money, has alienated and estranged the affections of his wife; that the plaintiff has wholly lost and been deprived of the comfort, fellowship, and society of his wife, and that her affections have been so alienated that for a long time past she has refused to live or cohabit with plaintiff. U. S. Horn and Ladd & Hughes are attorneys for the plaintiff." A similar account appeared on the same day in the San Francisco Call. Fred was found guilty of assault on May 20, 1896, reported the next day in the Herald.
The divorce proceedings, however, hit a snag. Los Angeles Herald, 04 jun 1896: "Denies a Decree. In the divorce case of Fred McCoy vs. Lulu McCoy, tried before Judge Clark yesterday, a decree was denied. The ground on which divorce was asked was cruelty, but when the case was tried it was shown that the only grounds for the allegation was the rather free use of Mrs. McCoy's tongue. Judge Clark held that even the reputation of being a common scold was not sufficient ground for divorce, and denied the prayer. Mr. McCoy will now have to get another cause before he can get a divorce."
In The Daily News (Denver, Colorado), 24 feb 1898, we find Fred McCoy of Greeley, Colorado as a guest at the Inter-Ocean Hotel in Cheyenne, Wyoming. A few lines later is the report of the marriage the previous morning of Fred McCoy and Lillian G. Baird, both of Greeley, at the Inter-Ocean Hotel in Cheyenne, officiated by Rev. Dr. Winship of the First Methodist Church.
In the Daily Illinois State Journal (Springfield, Illinois), 01 apr 1898, in news from Curran, Illinois: Mrs. Fred McCoy with her two children Ray and Grace, of Denver, Colo., spent Monday night with Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Search."
In 1900, Fred and Lillian and their young son John W. McCoy were in Granite Town, Grant Co., Oregon, just in time (June 8 or 9) for the US census. Fred's occupation was listed as "Merchant, General".
By 1902, Fred was in Seattle, advertising almost daily in the Seattle Daily Times, selling property in Seattle and also agricultural or timber properties in Eastern Washington. A little article appeared in that newspaper on 01 aug 1902: "Another House Robbery. The home of Fred McCoy, 608 Eighteenth Avenue, was entered by the "shovel and axe man" yesterday afternoon and jewelry worth fully $200 was stolen. The thief gained entrance by prying open a rear window with an axe. He went thoroughly over the house, taking together a lady's watch, a fob chain, one diamond and one emerald ring."

George is the missing link to tie all of the Alexander McCoy story together. Is the George McCoy, administrator of estate of Alexander McCoy in Adams Co., OH, the same as the George mentioned by the Brown Co., IL history, and the son of Alexander Sr. who fathered Alexander McCoy b. 1847? I am willing to believe this, because it provides the simplest explanation for all the existing facts.
Brown County, Illinois Guardian's Bonds vol. A p. 18 has a bond dated 18 mar 1862, in which Alexander McCoy and Alford Simpson are appointed guardians for Alexander McCoy, minor heir of George McCoy late of said county, deceased. Since the other son, Sidney, is not mentioned, he was evidently already dead by that date. The guardians were changed by a bond on p. 53 of the same volume, 18 sep 1865, Alexander A. Curry and J. R. Curry guardians for Alexander McCoy Jr., minor heir of George McCoy deceased.
[6348] however, note Adams Co. OH land entries 1817, Alexander, John, and George McCoy, James Miller, and David McBride, entry #700, apparently Byrd Tp. George is present in 1850 census, living near the A.D. Draper family.
[6349] Listed in (indexed) 1860 Census Mortality Schedule: George McCoy, 52, MD, consumption, Brown Co. But he is not listed in the collected cemetery records of Brown Co., IL. Probate records give death date as 01 jul 1860.
[14816] Brown Co. marriage records Book A #313 has George McCoy m. Nancy Wheeler. This would account for parentage of Alexander McCoy b. 1847, the date of same, and the fact that he is being cared for by Minerva Wheeler Draper 1850.
[14817] Marriage record says George McCoy and Arrena Keys.
