Famous reformer and scholar, he came to Geneva in 1566. Surname wavers between Goulard and Goulart, with occasional misspellings such as Goular. His publications had an enormous influence, extending to Shakespeare and Montaigne, whose essays he also edited (some would say censored).

Théodore Agrippa d'Aubigné memorialized him with these lines:

Simon Goulart senlisien ayant employé LX années de LXXXVI qu’il a vescu, à prescher la vérité à Genève, rempli l’Europe de plusieurs livres, en la doctrine & multiplicité desquels chacun admire celle des dons qu’il avoit reçeus du ciel, cependant tousjours fourni à sa charge, jusques à la dernière semaine de sa vie: les sept jours du silence de sa chaire remplacez par l’escole de son chevet: en fin en une saison où les siens avoyent besoin d’exemple de constance, il a justifié ses escrits sur le mespris de la mort part ses contenances joyeuses & propros d’exultation continuez parmi les hoquets & derniers fumeaux:

Ainsi la mort le delivre Plein de joye & nous d’ennuy, Luy rassasié de vivre Et nous affamés de lui.
