Witness in 1608. He was deceased by 24 dec 1622, when his widow Jaquemaz Convers, as guardian for her children Louis, Isaac, and Jeanne, made a reconnaissance for property she owned (ACV Fh 175 fol. 175). Another reconnaissance of the same date (fol. 171) says she was the daughter of the late Abraham Convers and of the late Leonarde Barbier.

Isaac MONOD (ID #I12666)

His existence is inferred from his appearance at a baptism 09 jul 1671, which, unfortunately, is not completely legible. On that date, Isaac son of Egrège Isaac (?) Mayor and Susanne Jaquemard was baptised, presented by Elizabeth Barbille Asperlin wife of honorable and prudent Gabriel Monod, and also Isaac Monod .... of Gabriel and Elizabeth his (?) wife. The relationship between Isaac and Gabriel is thus in question. One theory is that Isaac is another son of Gabriel Monod and Elizabeth Barbille Asperlin. This, however, seems extremely unlikely. Gabriel was born in 1640 and his wife in 1645. They would not have married until after 1660. A son of theirs, born about 1662, could not possibly have reached the age of confirmation by 1671 in order to be eligible to serve as a sponsor for a baptism. If, however, we read the relationship as brother instead of son, this objection disappears and the second Elizabeth becomes the wife of Isaac instead of the wife of Gabriel! It remains to be seen if any corroborating evidence can be found. At least as presently captured on microfilm, the word or words in question are simply unreadable.
Another baptism, 22 feb 1691, is even more problematic. The child is Isaac son of Joseph Viande and Gabrielle Chanay. The sponsors are Jaques Monod Juge du Venerable Consistoire, his nephew Isaac, and Susanne Monod, sister of the Juge, and Marie Monod her (or his?) niece. The construction is ambiguous; it is not clear whose niece Marie is, and it is not absolutely certain that Isaac is a Monod! Other baptisms, 01 jul and 01 oct 1691, make it clear that the nephew is indeed an Isaac Monod. This persistent association immediately suggests to us that Isaac had recently reached a marriageable age—certainly past the age of confirmation—and that his father had already died.
A further complication is the death record at Apples of "Mr. Isaac Monod de Balens... chez sa soeur Madame la Chatelaine Bory le 31 Janvier 1747. Il étoit âgé de 80 ans." His sister is evidently the Marie Monod who died at Apples, widow of the late Jean Gabriel Bory, 24 aug 1757, age 86. That would put her birthdate about 1671, and that of her brother Isaac about 1667. These two might be the Isaac and Marie who appeared with their uncle Jaques in 1691, a hypothesis which suggests that the Isaac Monod at the baptism in 1671 is not the same person. Thus, we are left with the presumption that Gabriel and Jaques, sons of Félix Monod, had a brother Isaac. Could he have been the father of the younger Isaac and of Marie, nephew and niece of the judge Jaques Monod?

Parentage from the critical edition of the Livre de Recteur of the Académie de Genève. Isaac François studied at Lausanne, Zurich, and Geneva, and possibly elsewhere. He was consacrated at Lausanne 06 apr 1697. He served as deacon at Château-d'Oex 1700-1701, Lutry 1701-1705, Nyon 1705-1716, and then as pastor at Nyon from 1716 until his death in 1746. The record of his marriage in Geneva has not been examined; it might be the source of the information about his parentage.
He published one of his first sermons, delivered 22 may 1697 at Lausanne, without the permission of the "Vénérable Académie", for which he was censured. However, his talent must have been recognized, for he was given a stipend to study literature and theology abroad in Holland or England, but not in France (Henri Vuilleumier Histoire de l'Eglise Réformée du Pays de Vaud sous le régime bernois, vol. III p. 179, 1930). Perhaps some trace of his studies may yet be found at one of the universities in England or Holland. He was back in the Pays de Vaud by December, 1700.
An article in the Revue Historique Vaudoise (Maxime Reymond, "Mandat du gouvernement berois, du 13 septembre 1715 sur les mariages mixtes," 34:345-347, 1926) reveals that the minister "François Isaac Monod" left some papers, which were found by Louis Bonnard, a lawyer at Nyon. The most likely explanation is that the papers were in the archives of the Eglise Réformée there.

He is usually called Isaac Monod. A "reconnaissance" by Benjamin and Louis, sons of the late Isaac Monod of Ballens, for a vineyard at Yens 22 jun 1740 might relate to this family (ACV FH 246 fol. 371). The property in 1676 belonged half to Philippe and Etienne Gabriel Mayor (the latter the father of Isaac Monod's wife), and the other half to Félix Monod "charge ayant" of his brother Jean Louis Monod. The Monod brothers were probably sons of Augustin, but no proof has been found. If Benjamin and Louis are indeed sons of the present Isaac Gabriel Monod, it is perhaps worth noting that Benjamin had still not quite reached the age of majority and thus should have had someone acting for him. However, his brother Louis, if he was the one baptised as Pierre Louis Gabriel in 1710, would have been old enough and so the question of the exact age of Benjamin might not have arisen.

Birthdate from secondary sources. His baptismal record appears to have been inserted between two others, but the handwriting appears to be that of the minister who should have performed the baptism, Gabriel Convers. The entry reads "Isaac Samuel fils de Mr. Monod de Froideville &c."
His first marriage was difficult to find. Secondary sources placed it at Nyon 29 aug 1756. We finally found it under the name de Froideville instead of Monod, 30 jul 1756: "Isaac Samuel fils de feu Monsieur Gabriel De Froideville Seigneur de Ballens, et Emelie Elizabeth fille de feu Docte Jost De Martigny, F[idèle] M[inistre] D[u] S[aint] E[vangile]". The second marriage is recorded in the parish of Apples.

Her baptism might be the one dated 15 may 1603, the name of the child omitted, the father Gabriel Monod, and the name of the mother not given. The terrier ACV Fg 151 mentions her (fol. 53) in 1663 (?) as the widow of Jean François Mayor and the sister of "Phoelix" Monod, Châtelain de Bière.

Appears as a sponsor at a baptism in 1642. Appears at baptism in St. Livres, 1651.
As the mother of the minister Gabriel Convers, she was supposed to be a grand-daughter of Gabriel, son of Anthoine Monod (ACV DK 82/9, miscellaneous papers of the notary Jean Pierre Monod, Châtelain de Berolle: an account of the division of a woodlot called the Bois de Bourguignon among Jean Louis and Jean Pierre Monod, brothers, and Gabriel Convers, minister, 1713-1714). Eg. Pierre Champion, Châtelain de Gimel, was one of the claimants, on the grounds that his mother, not named, was also a grand-daughter of the same Gabriel Monod. The fact that he made such a claim suggests that the original title involved Gabriel Monod, but this is not actually specified in the procedings. The Pierre Champion in question would have been the son of François Champion and Susanne Monod, sister of the present Jaqueline.
