He was a notary. His registers for the district of Morges covers 1677-1691 (ACV DB 27). During a part of his career, he also served on the council of Mollens, and his records reflect the business that came before the council. The marriage record at Aubonne omits the given name of the groom, but does specify that he is from Ballens. He was dead by 20 jan 1705, when his widow Jeanne Imberte Favre, acting for her children Jean Isaac Mayor, Andrianne Mayor, and Jeanne Susanne Mayor (this list does not necessarily include all of her children), advised by Gaspard's brother Pierre Mayor, operateur, sold property to Christophle Convers and others (Jean Pierre Monod, notary at Ballens, ACV DK 82/1). Another transaction on the same date also names their nephews Jean Isaac and Jean Louis Pirod. The last register of Gaspard Mayor is signed on the last page by his son Jean Isaac Mayor.

Witness at baptism in 1626, Bière. Beyond that, there is considerable confusion. There seem to have been 4 different men bearing this name toward the middle of the 17th Century.
One Gedeon Mayor -- not this one! -- was a minister. He served in Lavigny from around 1670 until 1677, when he became minister at Aubonne, until his death in 1704. A document of Gaspard Mayor, notary, 22 dec 1677, notes a neighboring parcel of land belonging to the "hoirs de feuz hon. Gedeon Mayor", thus referring to another Gedeon, not the minister. The same day, Phillippe Mayor sells a parcel for his mother Marthe Cloux, who was married to the second Gedeon, the one born in 1615. Also, 27 nov 1680, Jean Golaz makes his testament and includes a bequest of 50 florins to his "filiale" (goddaughter) Jeanne Marie Mayor, daughter of the late Gedeon Mayor, vivant de Mollens.
The present Gedeon was the eldest of the four. The children assigned to him are probably correct, since the second Gedeon was not married until 1641, and the other two were born after 1640.
The present Gedeon may be the one who is the subject of a reconnaissance in the terrier ACV Fg 151, honnoragle Gedeon Mayor de Ballens faicte au nom de ses enfans heus de feue Françoise Barbey sa femme, 18 jun 1662. Supporting that idea is that none of the others of this name have this wife.

This should be the Gédéon who married Marthe Cloux, based on age. The one who married Martha Cloux seems to have died by 1677, but this conclusion rests on the fact that mention of his death is found in notarial documents on the same day that a separate transaction shows Philippe Mayor selling property for his mother Marthe Cloux. He is not the minister, who was much younger.
Other records show that his daughter Jeanne Marie married Jean François Baudin and that two of his sons were Estienne Gabriel Mayor, Lt. of Mollens and Philippe Mayor.

The correct parentage of Gédéon Mayor the minister was elusive. The published edition of the Livre du Recteur of the Académie of Geneva gives his parents as David Mayor and Susanne de Saussure, which is not correct. He could not be identified with any of the baptisms at Ballens, Bière, Mollens, Aubonne, etc. The solution was found in the records of Bernard Grosjean, notary at Geneva, (AEG, vol. 15 pp. 356-357, 10 oct 1663), an obligation for 24 escus blancs for making and providing clothes, Spectable Gédéon Mayor son of the late Jean François Mayor of Ballens, proposant en théologie, declaring himself an adult over the age of 25, with his brother Isaac, to Theodore Reitter (Reiter), tailor and citizen of Geneva. Reitter had provided clothes for Gédéon while the latter was pursuing his studies in Geneva, and had also provided the wedding apparel for his brother Isaac Mayor some years previous.
He is mentioned again with another brother in a document recorded 25 nov 1668 by Henri Portaz, notary at Lausanne, in which Spectable Gédéon Mayor and Jean Baptiste Mayor his brother, acting also for their mother (not named) and their "indivis" (i.e., other relatives with whom they share an undivided interest in some property or estate) acknowledge their debt to Madame de Dignens for grain etc. This document proves that the Gédéon who was a theology student (denoted by the title Spectable) also had a brother Jean Baptiste, and that his own father had died by 1668. Among the Mayor baptisms so far analyzed, there are only two named Jean Baptiste, and only one has a brother Gédéon.

At first, it seemed this must be the Gédéon who was minister at Aubonne (deacon 1670-1677, pastor 1677-1704). However, a notarial record at Geneva proves otherwise. It is not known what became of Gédéon son of David. The published Livre du Recteur de l'Académie de Genève gives this parentage for the minister, though on what basis is not known.
By about 1720, there was also a notary Gédéon Mayor active in the area around Aubonne. Perhaps the present Gédéon was that notary?

From the vaguely known dates, this Girardus might possibly be the same person as the Girardus filius Cristini Maioris de Ballens who, with approval of his father (and that implies that Girardus had not yet reached the age of majority, 25 at that time), made a reconnaissance for property at Ballens, on 15 may 1380 (ACV Fh 101, at the bottom of fol. 72v). A later notation in the margin indicates the property was held by Petrus et Anthonius Mayor de Ballens (very clearly written), but this notation is undated.
However, there could be a problem: The preceding page, fol. 72, concerns Cristinus filius quondam dicte Mayencie filie quondam Cristini de Cabanis. By the time we reach the top of fol. 72v, apparently the same man is called Cristinus Mayencie, and his wife is Hugueta, daughter of Johannodus Vacheta. The name that may be Maioris, farther down fol. 72v, is not very clear (the last syllable is abbreviated, in any case), and could conceivably be a variant of Mayencie. It seems at least as plausible that "Maioris" could be simply a clerical error. The property is described as follows: "de laude, consensu, voluntate etc. dicti Cristini eius patris confitetur tenere imperpetui a domino predicto domino Albone et suis unam posam cum dimidia terre sitam in territorio Albone loco dicto en Sillions ? juxta terram dicti Girardi que movetur a prioratu de Romanomonasterii a juria, et terram Mermeti Pillioz de Ballens a borea, que solebat movere a Stephano Malleis ? sub censu annuo quatuor denarios Lausannenses census solvendos anno quolibet in festo Beati Michaeli." But the contemporary index of Fh 101 clearly identifies the reconnaissant as Girardus Mayoris, proving that at least some of the old scribes believed the name was Mayor.
On the other hand, there is an unquestionable Cristinus Maior cited a couple times in Fh 110 (fols. 13 and 13v, in a reconnaissance by Jaquetus dictus Bessens de Ballens dated 30 nov 1370). Cristinus was the tenant of two adjoining properties, but the descriptions are very brief and probably cannot be identified with the citation in 1380. Cristinus is also mentioned in Af 4, p. 154, as a neighboring property holder at Ballens, in an extract of a reconnaissace for properties recognized in the past by Girardus de Mollens quondam and Stephanus de Mont eius frater, and presently held by Johannes de Mollens absens a patria et Johannes de Mont, but lacking all of the introductory and closing formalities, as well as a date. Most of the dated items in Af 4 are from around 1377. Another copy of the same material is in Fg 3, also lacking the date, but preceded by what is likely a folio number, 85, from the source that was copied into Fg 3, indicated on the first folio to be "an old book covered in black leather". That volume is evidently the same Af 4, where on the original folio 85, the list of properties subject to Girardus de Mollens and his brother begins. Af 4 was renumbered at an early date, likely still in the 15th Century, replacing the original folio numbers (Roman numerals) (of which there are at least two sets in some parts of the volume) with page numbers (Arabic numerals). Af 4 begins with a dated reconnaissance, 02 apr 1377, in a way that suggests the whole volume is in fact a quernet for Ludovicus de Cossonay, the date thus applicable in some way to the entire volume, even though the individual components may have been copied from earlier individual reconnaissances. A small number of individual items in Af 4 include a date, sometimes in the margin, all apparently around 1377.
A "douz Verney" family is known at Reverolle. A terrier designated ACV Fi 8 contains reconnaissances in favor of Johannes "douz Verney chevalier de Reverolle" (inventaire of the ACV), living in 1387, compiled by Johannes de Marine, and those in favor of his son Amedeus "douz Verney", living 1431-1436, compiled by Jaquemetus douz Ructit. A noble de Vernay family is also known in the area, but there seems to be nothing to connect them either with Ballens or with Aubonne.
Fh 123 (commissaire Petrus Mangie) contains several statements concerning the Mayor family of Ballens. Among others, fol. 200 mentions property held by Aymonetus Mayor (17 mar 1455) that was previously recognized by his paternal grandfather Girardus Mayor, and that had come from Perretus Grand of Ballens. Petrus Mayor had an equal interest in the same property, and was apparently also a descendant of the same Girardus Mayor (his exact relationship to Aymonetus or to Girardus is not mentioned). This Petrus had a wife Nycoleta (fol. 206), daughter of Aymonetus Soudans, and this Petrus can be identified with certainty.

This is the same Hugues Mayor of Mollens, nephew of Isaac Caillat Châtellain d'Etoy et Lieutenant du Châtellain d'Aubonne, who was apprenticed to Jean Dentand the elder, surgeon and "operateur" in Geneva. Caillat was acting on behalf of his brother-in-law George Mayor (father of Hugues Mayor). The full text follows:
