Michel MAYOR       (ID #I14323)

(male)
Father: Pierre MAYOR (b. bef 1430, d. bef 1507)
Mother: Nycolleta SAUDAN (d. bef 1485?)

Family 1 :
  1. +Claude MAYOR (d. abt 1568)
  2.  Thevenaz MAYOR (dates unknown)

Michel is added as a son of Pierre Mayor and Nycollete Saudan in order to explain the joint ownership of property between his grandson the "pupil" François son of Claude Mayor son of Michel, and the grandchildren of Jaques Mayor son of Pierre. In order for François to have a half interest, he would have to descend from a branch separate from that represented by the descendants of Jaques (including, among others, the notary Claude Mayor). In addition, he would have to attach to the common ancestry at approximately this point in the descent from the "original" Antoine Mayor alias de Vernay. François could not descend from Antoine's son Michel, whose descendants already have a reasonably well understood genealogy and a different set of jointly owned properties.

Michel MAYOR       (ID #I14274)

(male)
Father: Antoine DE VERNAY ALIAS MAYOR (b. abt 1400, d. bef 1455)
Mother: Johanneta MAYOR (d. bef 1488)

Family 1 :
  1. +Antoine MAYOR (d. aft 1514)
  2. +Jean MAYOR (d. bef 1565)
  3. +Ottonin MAYOR (dates unknown)
  4. +(daughter) MAYOR (dates unknown)

His three sons Antoine, Jean, and Ottonin are mentioned several times in the terriers. The terrier ACV Fg 125 (compiled by Eg. Etienne Mayor, reconnaissance dated 04 oct 1603, fol. 967v ff.) , covering Mollens, reveals that the three brothers were the owners in 1531 of the mill at La Goille (usually called Gollies, Goillie, etc., apparently the same location as Goiles or Goylies, site of a leprosarium between the villages of Mollens and Ballens circa 1257), on stream called Le Veyron. The brothers also had a half interest in property for which the other half belonged to the Claude Mayor who had married Mermette, daughter of Jaques Matthey dit de Ballens. This fact might be taken as an indication that the Mayors of Mollens derive from a brother of Michel, father of the three brothers Antoine, Jean, and Ottonin. We hope to find more information in the earlier terriers for Mollens, particularly the one from about 1530 compiled by Egrège François Gros of Bière, the source of the information about the history of the mill in Fg 125.

A further set of reconnaissances in Fh 137 and Fh 153 concern vines at Aubonne "en Chevrajon" (modern spelling Chivrageon), property that was already divided between the representatives of Michel and his brother Pierre as early as 1506, consistent with the present analysis.

The reconnaissance in Fh 153 (fol. 318), dated 25 feb 1566, is especially important for our purposes. The text describing the parties and the vineyard "en Chevrajon" reads as follows:

(fol. Notice that the payment listed here is 1/8 of the original 18 deniers, corresponding to 1/4 of 1/2 of the original 2 poses of vines. Another 1/4 of this 1/2 is assessed in a separate reconnaissance (fol. 704) to Jeanne daughter of Anthoine Mayor. The solution required to generate the total of 18 deniers still due for the original 2 poses is as follows:

  1. For the 1 pose that went to Jaques Mayor, and now held jointly by François son of Pierre son of Jaques and his brothers and cousins, 9 deniers.
  2. For the 1 pose that went to Michel Mayor, and now held by his descendants:
    1. 1/4 due from Pierre son of Jean son of Michel Mayor, 2 1/4 deniers;
    2. 1/4 due from Humbert son of Ottonin son of Michel Mayor, 2 1/4 deniers;
    3. 1/4 due from Gabriel and Jaques Vioux, sons of Loys Vioux and his wife, presumably a daughter of Michel Mayor, 2 1/4 deniers;
    4. 1/4 due from Jeanne daughter of Antoine son of Michel Mayor, separated from the preceding sums probably as a result of her marriage settlement and therefore the subject of a separate reconnaissance, 2 1/4 deniers.

Thus, the present reconnaissance appears to be in error in not stating that each of the parties represented by Pierre should pay 2 1/4 deniers annually for this particular property.

Michel MAYOR       (ID #I1202)

(male)
Father: Mondet MAYOR (b. bef 1453, d. aft 1478, BEF 1488)

Family 1 : Françoise LAMBERT (d. aft 1561)
  1.  Collette MAYOR (dates unknown)
  2. +Sebastienne MAYOR (dates unknown)
  3. +Jean MONOD (b. bef 1544, d. aft 1585)

This is the Michel "Mayor" whose descendants seem to have taken the family name Monod, placed here for lack of a better alternative. Michel seems most likely to be a son of Mondet Mayor son of Aymonet Mayor of Ballens, but it is also possible that he was another son of Aymonet, or else of Mondet's brother Estivent. Because the Monod family was also known as Mayor (as well as other names) until approximately the middle of the 16th Century, it is more difficult than usual to distinguish this Michel from others who might have been known by these names about the same time.

One of the many transactions recorded by the notary Claude Mayor (ACV DB 26) dealing with land owned by the "pupil" Francois Mayor son of the late Claude Mayor of Ballens goes one step further: Claude is said to be the son of the late Michel Mayor. Is this correct? And if so, is Michel the one who was also known as Monod? In the terrier of 1622 (ACV FH 175) there is a "Michel Mayor autrement Monnod" who would be about the same generation, but the only son noted for that Michel is a Jean Mayor alias Monod, who seems to be the one called Jean Monod of Ballens in the records of the notary Claude Mayor. (All of the "Mayor alias Monod" cited in the terriers seem to be known exclusively as Monod in the records of this notary.) After extensive research, we feel we have a sufficient understanding of the several men called Claude Mayor to begin to deal with the identity of one or more men named Michel Mayor (or Mayor alias Monod).

In the terrier ACV FH 31, circa 1580 (see fols. 46v-64), the Lambert family shares a number of properties with a Jehan Monod son of Michel. Reckoning from the descriptions of the properties, the Jehan Monod in question is none other than Jehan Mayor aultrement Monod whose parents were Michel Mayor aultrement Monod and Françoise Lambert. Françoise seemed most likely to be a daughter of the Michel Lambert who made a reconnaissance (Fh 137) in 1507, but see below, where she is said to be the daughter of Pierre Lambert instead.

At the moment, we leave several children who apparently belong to Michel Mayor and his wife Françoise Lambert, while moving the Claude who left the orphan son François circa 1568 as the son of a different Michel whose descendants were never called Monod. The Claude Mayor who was dit Mathey is removed to his own branch, of uncertain parentage (but now attached, at least for the moment, as son of the Jaques Mayor who was also the father of another Claude Mayor, notary). Further, since Jean son of Michel Mayor dit Monod shared many properties with Pierre Monod in the middle of the 16th Century, we first thought to attach Pierre to this same parentage. This idea had to be abandoned, however, when we discovered a "reconnaissance" dated 14 mar 1569 (ACV Fh 155, fol. 197) in which several representatives of the Monod family recognized their obligation for an annual rent in support of the clergy of the Barony of Aubonne. While the details are still rather murky, the total sum of 18 sols was to be shared as follows:

This division of the obligation immediately suggests that Claude and Michel were brothers, and that their father was a brother of Estivent. The same rent was, according to this reconnaissance, paid in the past by Estivent Monod, but the passage is vague and does not tell us if it is the same Estivent who was the father of Antoine, or an earlier Estivent. It is also not clearly stated how the Monod family came to owe this rent, since the previous tenant was someone named (Noble?) Jehan Hugonyn (of La Tour-de-Peil?). The property itself is not clearly described, but it seems to have been somewhere in the territory of Ballens, if we can judge from the way the terrier is organized. In spite of the uncertainties, this is so far the only reconnaissance that appears to link several branches of the Monod family who were living at the time the reconnaissance was signed.

We are guessing, also, that the father of this Michel Mayor alias Monod should be Mondet Mayor, son of Aymonet. Further study of the terriers will be needed before this assignment can be given much weight.

Although a different set of properties is involved, the terrier Fh 31 (about 1580) speaks of some these same parties: Pierre son of the late Claude Monod alias Mayor, and Jean son of the late Michel Monod alias Mayor. Fh 31 also includes several other Monods whose relationships are more difficult to reconcile with other sources: "Anthoine filz de feu Pierre Monod et Claude filz de feu Thivent Monod et ses freres", "Jaques filz de feu Thivent Monod", and Claudaz and Genon, the daughters of the late François Monod. It is certainly possible that these last parties are all descendants of the Estivent Monod who was already deceased by 1568. And Estivent may be the person known as Stephanus Monod alias Cigoen in some of the earlier terriers.

A small sheaf of "reconnaissances" involving the noble de Mont family (IB 296b/896) includes one dated 30 aug 1561, resolving a dispute between: Jehan Vuallisfin (?) bourgeois de Gex and his wife Françoise, daughter of the late Jaques de Mont, and Noble Claude de Mont as administrator for Jehan minor son of the late Perrod de Mont of one part, and Michel son of the late Philibert Lambert in his own name and also for the heirs of Christine daughter of the late Michel Lambert formerly the wife of Estienne Bernard of Martherey, also Anthoine son of the late Humbert Lambert, Françoise daughter of the late Pierre Lambert, formerly the wife of the late Michel Monod and now the wife of Jehan Jaquenod of Estuey (but later in the document he is called Michel Jaquenod), and Pernon, widow of the late Jaques Lambert, for her children Pierre, François, and Claude Lambert. The de Mont family had obtained title to the property from the de Plaict family, and their subjects the Lamberts and the others had inherited their feudal obligations on these properties from the late Soudans family of Ballens, as cited in a previous reconnaissance (Egs. Pierre Cuynssin and Pierre Malliez dated 16 nov 1474, and before that by a reconnaissance in favor of the de Mont family by Pernette daughter of the late Perrod Soudans, wife of Aymonet de Plaict and mother of Jehan de Plaict, 16 jun 1450 (Eg. Pierre Thomasset). There was a further obligation to repay a debt in 1468, guaranteed by the following parties: François son of the late Jaques Mayor, and his brothers and nephews, sons of the late Egrege Claude Mayor (this is the elder notary of that name, not the younger one, his son, whose registers begin in 1567), and François son of the Claude son of the late Michel Mayor, and also Pierre son of the late Nycod Soudans and Pierre his nephew son of Anthoine Soudans of Ballens. The effect of the settlement is to determine the exact amounts that each of the party owes or is entitled to collect.

  2.  Zacharie MAYOR (dates unknown)

He was probably still under the age of majority in 1580 when his father made a reconnaissance on his behalf (ACV Fh 164 fol. 68). By 19 mar 1587, he had definitely reached the age of majority, since he sold a large number of parcels at Ballens on that date (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/6 fol. 40). The sales continued until 26 mar 1587, when one of them mentions also his brother Pierre (fol. 48). Many of the parcels adjoined property of the notary Claude Mayor, but otherwise there is nothing that established the parentage of his father Jaques Mayor. Michel also sold his share of an unspecified woodlot at Ballens on 05 may 1588 (fol. 100).

His widow Jaquemaz made a "reconnaissance" for her children François and Zacharie (Fh 171 fol. 218, circa 1606).

Michel MAYOR       (ID #I297)

Father: Pierre MAYOR (b. bef 1512, d. bef 1570)
Mother: Françoise _____ (d. aft 1570)

Family 1 : Barbille KUCH (dates unknown)
  1.  Jeanne MAYOR (dates unknown)
  2.  Françoise MAYOR (dates unknown)

Witness with Sulpice Mayor 1582, both of Ballens. A long series of sales is noted in 1587 (Claude Mayor, notary), naming Michel's father as the late Jaques Mayor de Ballens, and naming other relatives.

He was a notary.

One document shows his widow Barbille, heir according to the testament of the late Egrège Michel Mayor, selling a vineyard at Lavigny 11 nov 1616, Claude Mayor notary. As no similar documents appear in the minutaire, it is likely the rest of his holdings were disposed of in transactions handled by some other notary. In the document, Michel is listed as bourgeois d'Aubonne. This raises the possibility that the man who died about 1616 was a different person from Michel Mayor of Ballens.

In fact, it appears likely that there were actually two contemporary Michel's, one son of Jaques, the other son of Pierre, who have been confused in some instances. We show the records that seem to pertain to the son of Pierre, but with the understanding that more evidence is needed.

Michel Mayor the notary is also the subject of a document recorded 20 mar 1581 by Jean Jaquier, notary at Moudon (ACV DL 53/3 fol. 116), naming his wife and requesting distribution of property that would have come to his wife in her first marriage to Benoit Favre of Thierrens. This document gives the surname of Barbille and indicates her family lived in Bern. Thus, Michel the notary is the one who married Barbille Kuch and who seems to have been recently dead by the end of 1616.

It is apparently his daughters Jeanne and Françoise who made a "reconnaissance" for the hospital of Aubonne on 04 oct 1618 (ACV Fh 173 fol. 485) for property formerly recognized by Pierre son of the late Jean Mayor of Ballens 27 feb 1565 based on another "reconnaissance" (P. Cuinsin, commissaire) made by Antoine Mayor of Ballens. This is not the property, originally comprising two poses, in the territory of Aubonne "en Chevrajon" (modern spelling Chivrageon) that is also enumerated in the terriers Fh 137 and 153 and taxed for the benefit of the Baron of Aubonne. Rather, it is a different vineyard in the same vicinity that was taxed for the benefit of the hospital of Aubonne. The version in Fh 173 adds some significant history that should eventually help to place some constraints on the dates of the early generations of the Mayor family.

It is apparent from the above that the Benoit Favre of Thierrens who was the first husband of Barbille Kuch was not the same Benoit Favre of Aubonne who was still married to Sara Tripod as late as 1607.

Egrege Michel Mayor is also noted in several places as bourgeois de Lausanne. A volume devoted to the "anciens bourgeois" de Lausanne (AVL D 438), apparently compiled in the late 17th Century, lists Eg. Michel Mayor among those who were received as bourgeois about 1570, the original records and the dates even then having disappeared (fol. 22).

Mondet MAYOR       (ID #I14263)

(male)
Father: Aymonetus (junior) MAYOR (d. aft 1455?)

Family 1 :
  1. +Pierre MAYOR (b. aft 1473, d. aft 1531, BEF 1536?)
  2. +Michel MAYOR (b. bef 1520, d. bef 1561)
  3. +Johannes MAYOR (d. bef 1531)
  4. +Franciscus MAYOR (dates unknown)

Exactly who were the children of Mondet Mayor alias Monod is still far from clear. We can be completely sure about a son Pierre (called junior in 1496) who is attested many times. Two additional sons Johannes and Franciscus left children, cited in Fg 52, fol. 167 ff (1531). The terrier ACV Fh 155, fol. 197 ff, contains some language suggesting additional possibities that have so far defied explanation. Also, Mondet may have had a brother Estivent (this is stated more or less directly in Fg 125, but could easily be an error). Beyond that, there are some very confusing citations in the terrier Fh 175 (from about 1622) that paraphrase a terrier of 1570 that has not yet been located. This terrier of 1622 quotes apparently the same reconnaissance of 1570 in at least three or four contradictory versions. Whatever it said originally, the paraphrases are so garbled that they cannot be used to clarify relationships; however, one of the versions is somewhat similar to the one reported in 1569 in Fh 155 (fol. 197). The same properties that were described in the missing terrier of 1570 should also be described in Fh 31, a summary of the same jurisdiction compiled about 1580.

The somewhat confusing information concerning the early Claude Mayor may be resolved by a statement in Fg 125 that Pierre Mayor/Monod, nephew of Thivent Cigoen, was a son of Claude son of Estienne Mayor, who was in turn apparently a brother of Mondet Mayor. This Pierre son of Claude may be the same one who is known from the records of the notary Claude Mayor, thus perhaps tying the generations together. For the moment, it seems best to rely on the relatively clear account in Fg 125, and thus attach the early Claude Monod as a son of Estievent Mayor, son of Aymonet Mayor.

For the moment, we also attach the Michel Mayor alias Monod whose son Jean Monod was active at Ballens around 1580. There is evidently some connection with the children of Mondet, but we have not yet found any document where Michel appears in his own name and that might thus help to establish his dates.

Mondetus Mayor is mentioned several times as a neighboring tenant in the terrier Fh 7, in a reconnaissance dated 21 oct 1478 (fol. 119 ff.). Consequently, we can assume that he had reached the age of majority by 1478, and so was born before 1453. It has not been established whether the Mondetus mentioned in Fh 7 might be the same person called Aymonetus in the same terrier. This possibility can be investigated by comparing the descriptions of the properties where these names are mentioned as adjacent tenants.

We suspect he is the same man called Aymonodus Mayor, a man who appeared as witness to a series of reconnaissances in 1488 (ACV IB B 735).

Ottonin MAYOR       (ID #I14256)

(male)
Father: Michel MAYOR (d. bef 1506)

Family 1 :
  1. +Humbert MAYOR (dates unknown)
  2. +Pierre MAYOR (b. bef 1512, d. bef 1570)

He may have inherited property held in the distant past by someone called Girard Cigoen or Agoen, or perhaps one of each. Some of the terriers seem confused about these names, but Ottonin's descendants ended up with a shared interest in property from this source, whether by inheritance or as the result of a sale, forfeit, or other transaction. Interestingly, there was also a Thivent Monod dit Cigoen, apparently in the early 16th Century, mentioned in a later terrier of Mollens. The connection with the Cigoen family probably dates from a period when the Monod family was still a part of the Mayor family.

Daughter of late Pierre Mayor of Ballens. She appears to be the same Pernon Mayor who appeared with brothers Anthoine and Michel and sister Marguerite to confirm the verbal will of her father in 1570, but if that is true, she would not be the daughter of the present Pierre!

  4. +Susanne MAYOR (dates unknown)
  5.  Marie MAYOR (dates unknown)
  6.  (son) MAYOR (bp. 21 MAR 1690)

In addition to the named children, there is a baptism for a son 21 mar 1690 at Mollens, where the given name is blank. In spite of evidence for some sort of inheritance from Gabriel Mayor, a document dated 29 dec 1677 has Philippe acting on behalf of his mother Marthe Cloux. In spite of the implication that Philippe had reached the age of majority in 1677, it may be that he was born at little later.

As far as we have been able to determine, there was only one Philippe Mayor in the last half of the 17th Century. He had a brother Estienne Gabriel Mayor, a sister Gabrielle Mayor wife of Jean Michel Morel, and a sister Jeanne Marie who married Jean François Baudin. These relationships, documented in the records of the notaries, help bridge the big gap in the church records.

Son of the late David Mayor, but which one? This one seems to be of the right generation.

The Pierre who was the son of David Mayor and George Convers made a "reconnaissance" 25 jan 1678 (ACV Fg 159 fol. 31v) for property that had previously belonged to Isaac Convers, son of Jean son of Jaques (Fh 175 fol. 11v). George was the daughter of this Isaac.

Pierre MAYOR       (ID #I14266)

(male)
Father: Antoine DE VERNAY ALIAS MAYOR (b. abt 1400, d. bef 1455)
Mother: Johanneta MAYOR (d. bef 1488)

Family 1 : Nycolleta SAUDAN (d. bef 1485?)
  1. +Jaques MAYOR (b. bef 1482, d. aft 1564?)
  2.  Humbert MAYOR (dates unknown)
  3. +Michel MAYOR (dates unknown)

The most significant source for the dates for this Petrus Mayor senior come from ACV Fh 123, fol. 204v, where Petrus Mayor, who appears frequently in this terrier, is revealed to be the one whose wife was Nycolleta Soudan.

There are many men called Pierre Mayor in the terriers that cover Ballens, and many of them are mentioned in the context of an indefinite past. It has been extremely difficult to determine how they should be connected. This one is usually fairly easy to identify because of his association with the de Vernay alias, the designation "senior", the association with his wife Nycolleta Soudan, his brother Michael, and his father Anthonius de Vernay.

One Pierre, already noted as feu Pierre Mayor in 1569, is mentioned in connection with the house of his son François, located next to the house owned by François pupil of the late Claude Mayor (1/2) and by Mory Saudan (3/8) and Pierre Saudan le Jeusne (1/8). This Pierre Mayor must not be the father of Egrège Anthoine, Egrège Michel, Pernon, and Marguerite, as that Pierre dictated his verbal will late in 1570. Unless there is a different Jaques who was the adult son of Pierre circa 1570, we suggest tentatively that "Jaques nourry de Pierre Mayor", mentioned as early as 1569 in the records of the notary Claude Mayor (ACV DB 26), is the illegitimate son of the same Pierre who had the son François. Another reason for this suggestion is the fact that a Jaques Mayor is mentioned frequently in the 1622 terrier of Ballens in citations from a previous terrier of 1570, with his nephews "Sulpy" and Pierre Mayor. Given the apparently ancestry of the uniquely named "Sulpy" (properly Sulpice), it is necessary that this same Pierre had a son Jaques.

However, we have come to believe that the Pierre just described must be brother of the elder notary Egrège Claude Mayor.

The present Pierre is apparently the grandfather of the Pierre just described. He must be old enough to be the grandfather of the elder notary Egrège Claude Mayor, and old enough to be the ancestor of the "François pupil de feu Claude Mayor" who is cited in 1570. In 1496 (Fj 5), because he was aged and infirm (vallitudinarius et senex), his sons Jacobus and Humbertus signed a reconnaissance for him. At that time, his brother Michael was still alive, not described as aged and infirm, but nevertheless his nephew Jacobus signed for him as well.

The terrier Fh 137, dating from 1506-1508, describes holdings of his son Jacobus (=Jaques), and tells us that Pierre had already died by 22 oct 1507 (fol. 436, also another reconnaissance on fol. 448). This reconnaissance mentions that Pierre had previously recognized the same properties (Eg. Jean Vulliet) on behalf of his children Jacobus and Humbertus, his children by his (late) wife Nycollete Saudan. During the process of describing about 20 properties held by Jacobus, additional relationships are revealed. Jacobus had a brother Humbertus Mayor, still living in 1507. Their father Pierre Mayor had married Nycollete, daughter of Aymonet Soudan. Another daughter of Aymonet Soudan, Pernete, had married Mermet Solliard. Mermet and Pernete had a son Nycollet Solliard who was thus first cousin to Jacobus and his brother Humbertus. Jacobus and Humbert were also related in some way to Antoine son of Michel son of Antoine "de Vernay alias Mayor", whose reconnaissance on fol. 421 (28 may 1506) of the same terrier actually refers to "Jacobus de Vernay alias Mayor" and indicates that Michel de Vernay alias Mayor had a brother Pierre, thus providing the link. Unless there is another generation between Antoine de Vernay alias Mayor and the present Pierre Mayor, we can add another generation to the pedigree of the Mayors.

A complication arises when we consider the ancestry of the branch of the Mayor family "dit Mathey" at Mollens. The progenitor was Claude Mayor, already an adult and married to Mermette, daughter of Jaques Mathey dit de Ballens in 1529 (ACV Fg 125, compiled about 1603-1612). At least some of the property that Claude Mayor had recognized in a previous terrier, not yet located, was stated in Fg 125 to have been jointly owned with Antoine, Jean, and Ottonin, sons of Michel Mayor alias du Vernay, who was the brother of the present Pierre. Prior to that, at least part of the same property was recognized in a terrier compiled by "Expert Aymonet Pollens" (Fj 5, circa 1490, not yet studied in detail) , by the same Michel Mayor and his brother the present Pierre. It follows that Claude dit Mathey ought to be a descendant of these brothers as well, but how? He could be another son of Pierre who settled his inheritance with his brothers and relocated at Mollens, but if that were true, how would he end up with a 50% share of property for which the other 50% was held by the sons of Michel? It would be necessary to imagine additional settlements, very plausible individually, but complicated enough that we hesitate to reach a conclusion. The earlier terriers, if they still exist, should help us resolve this proplem. One possibility is that we are missing a generation in the present lineage. Perhaps the present Pierre is not the same Pierre whose brother was Michel, but rather a nephew or uncle of that Michel.

Leaving the problem of Claude Mayor dit Mathey aside, however, the history of a small vineyard containing 2 poses at Aubonne "en Chevrajon" (modern spelling Chivrageon) provides a comprehensive inventory of the Mayor family at Ballens. In the terrier Fh 137 (reconaissances beginning at fols. 421 and 436v), among the many properties enumerated for Jaques son of Pierre son of Antoine de Vernay alias Mayor, and for Antoine and his brothers, sons of Michel son of Antoine de Vernay alias Mayor, we read that this vineyard, originally from the estate of the first Antoine, was held jointly by his sons Michel and Pierre, and then divided in half by his grandsons Antoine son of Michel and Jaques son of Pierre. (The first of these two reconnaissances attributes the feudal tax to Aymonet Mayor, "predecessor" of Antoine son of Michel son of Antoine de Vernay alias Mayor, thus providing evidence for some sort of connection between the Mayor family of Ballens and the Monod family that appears to have descended from Aymonet Mayor.)

The same vineyard is described, though not without several serious errors, in the terrier Fh 153, in three separate reconnaissances dating from 1566. The half of the original 2 poses that had gone to Jaques son of Pierre Mayor was still held jointly by his descendants. The other half had been split, whether formally or not, into four parts, of which three were treated together in a way that obscures the nature of the division. It was only by following the tax that was due that we were able to find the relationships that are implied. An additional implication is that any other children of Pierre seem not to have left descendants, or else such descendants had sold their interest in this vineyard to their siblings or cousins.

The descendants of Jaques son of Pierre who held his half of the vineyard "en Chevrajon" as of 29 apr 1566 (Fh 153, fol. 411v) were:

  1. Sons of the late Pierre son of Jaques:
    1. François fils de feu Pierre;
    2. Jaques fils de feu Pierre;
    3. Antoine fils de feu Pierre;
  2. Sons of the late Claude (he was a notary) son of Jaques:
    1. Claude (soon to become a notary) fils de feu Claude;
    2. Louis fils de feu Claude;
    3. François fils de feu Claude;

In addition to these, there is one more branch that seems to belong here, that of François, minor son of the late Claude son of Michel circa 1567. The latter Michel appears to be another son of the present Pierre, because of relationships inferred from other property owned jointly.

Pierre MAYOR       (ID #I14264)

(male)
Father: Mondet MAYOR (b. bef 1453, d. aft 1478, BEF 1488)

Family 1 : Johanneta CIGOEN (dates unknown)
Family 2 : _____ NOBLET (dates unknown)
  1.  Jacobus MAYOR (b. bef 1506)

This Petrus Mayor had not yet reached the age of majority (25 at that time) as of 23 jun 1488 (he was therefore born certainly after 1463; however, he is also called impuberis on this date, i.e., under the age of 14, which would place his birth date after 1474), when he was represented by Petrus Cigoen alias Bosson (later noted as his father-in-law, in 1508), who had married Stephana Mayor, the daughter of Stephanus Mayor. Both Stephana and Mondetus (father of Petrus Mayor junior) were grandchildren of (the same) Aymonetus Mayor (ACV P de Mestral I 1507, 326v ff, and Fh 137, 850 ff) and were thus cousins. The reconnaissance of 1588 does not mention any siblings for this Petrus, but that does not necessarily mean that he had none.

The property that he recognized in 1506 (terrier ACV Fh 137) was later held by members of the Monod family. A later terrier, Fh 175, compiled about 1622, cites his "reconnaissance" and also on another page says Claude son of Mondet Mayor executed a reconnaissance at the same time. The reference to Claude might be an error, since Fh 137 only mentions Pierre, not Claude, in this connection. An intermediate terrier from about 1570, not yet located, may help to resolve this problem. On the other hand, there was evidently a Claude who was probably the brother of Pierre, likely the one who was the son of Mondet. This Claude was deceased before 1569 and had left a son Pierre who is well documented.

The same Petrus Mayor, son of Mondetus, is cited as the late paternal uncle of the children of his two brothers Franciscus and Johannes in a reconnaissance dated 04 mar 1531 (Fg 52, fol. 167), which cites a reachept to which he was a party, dated 06 jan 1512, thus placing his death after that date.

So far, there seems to be no evidence that Petrus Mayor junior left any descendants except the son Jacobus.
