He is apparently the Jacobus Mayor or Jacobus de Vernay alias Mayor who acknowledged property in the terrier ACV Fh 137 in 1507, a document that also mentions a brother Humbertus. This reconnaissance is specifically mentioned in the later terrier Fh 175 under the name Jaques Mayor, mentioning another brother Claude. However, there does not seem to be a mention of his brother Humbert in 1570, nor a mention of his brother Claude in 1507. It could be that shares of the estate of Pierre had been exchanged or sold at least twice since Pierre's death, so that Humbert would be a part-owner in 1507 but by 1570 the heirs of Claude had his share. Other records raise the possibility that a generation has been missed, another Jaques Mayor, but those records seem to misquote the terrier Fh 137.
We first thought he was the same Jaques Mayor of Ballens who had married Pernette Darzier, daughter of Laurent, and who made a "reconnaissance" on her behalf on 04 feb 1564 for property formerly recognized in 1506 by her grandfather Claude Darzier. If this is so, then their son Claude Mayor married his first cousin once removed, Pernon Bellosat, daughter of Claudaz Darzier and Pierre Bellosat. This degree of consanguinity was permissible under the rules of Their Excellencies of Bern, and was also permissible before the Reformation. This Claude Mayor died about 1566 (shortly before his son Claude began his own notarial registers, ACV DB 26), leaving Pernon Bellosat his widow and three sons who had reached the age of majority by 1570 (they made a "reconnaissance" of property in 1570, cited in the terrier of 1622, Fh 175—the terrier of 1570 is apparently lost) . In other words, the elder Claude should have been born about 1520 or perhaps even a little earlier, and it is thus entirely feasible that Claude's father Jaques would have reached the age of majority in 1507 (thus born no later than 1482). If he were still alive in 1564, he would therefore have been 82 years old, not impossible but not very likely either.
The history of a vineyard at Aubonne "en Chevrajon" (modern spelling Chivrageon), discussed in the notes for the paternal ancestors of Jaques, confirms many relationships and ties apparently all of the Mayor family of Ballens together.
Michel Mayor, son of Jaques and of Pernette Darzier, and François, son of this Michel, inherited other property at Aubonne from the Darzier family. The reconnaissance of François son of Michel son of Jaques is found in the terrier ACV Fh 176bis (fol. 492v, 23 oct 1623), involving a number of parcels that had come from the sisters of Pernette Darzier. Additional mentions of Michel, Jean, and Jeanne children of Jaques and of Pernette Darzier are found in Fh 164, dating from 1580—but this would make Jaques impossibly old, and seems to confirm our suspicion that a generation has been missed. In other words, the Jaques Mayor who was apparently the father of Pierre and Claude, and the later Jaques Mayor who married Pernette Darzier and had a brother Antoine who married Pernette's sister Françoise (Fh 164), were two different men.
But might there have been another Jaques Mayor, a contemporary of the present one? The terriers Fh 31 and Fh 175, taken together, say that in 1570, the guardian of François son of the late Claude Mayor was someone identified as Claude Mayor son of Jaques Mayor of Mollens (the passage is ambiguous, signifying certainly that Claude Mayor was from Mollens, but possibly that his father was from Mollens as well). Since the only Jaques Mayor known at Mollens in that period does not seem to have had a son Claude, it may be that the original Claude Mayor of Mollens, called Mayor dit Mathey because he married Mermette Mathey of Mollens, was the guardian in question, and thus also the son of a very early Jaques Mayor. Either the present Jaques Mayor had two sons named Claude (not an uncommon situation at this period), or else there was another Jaques who still needs to be separated from the present one.
But how was Claude Mayor of Mollens related to his ward, François? Guardians and their wards are normally found to be related fairly closely, either by blood or by marriage, but not so closely that there would be a conflict of interest. This François appears to be the son of Claude Mayor "dit Graton" and his wife Hennarde. While the origin of the dit name has not been discovered, Claude Mayor "dit Graton" seems to be the son of Michel Mayor, brother of the present Jaques. If this is correct, that would make guardian and ward first cousins once removed. Michel does not seem to have left any other male heirs, so under this hypothesis Claude Mayor of Mollens would be the closest male relative who could serve as guardian for François. The other son of the late Jaques, Pierre, had already died by about 1569, and his sons would be second cousins of François, and in addition, they may have owned property jointly with François. In other words, and in spite of the apparent evidence for another brother Claude (the notary, deceased by about 1566) son of Jaques, the evidence seems to support the existence of two sons of Jaques Mayor named Claude, one the notary, the other the one who settled at Mollens.

Witness 07 jan 1575, also witness specified as son of Pierre 16 mar 1578. Were there one or two Jaques at that time? Parentage not specified in marriage of 1578. Could this be the "late" Jaques Mayor whose son Pierre married in 1582? Appears as early as 1568 as Jaques nourry de Pierre Mayor (Claude Mayor notary), and in 1596 (Claude Mayor notary) there is a Pierre fils de Jaques nourry de Pierre Mayor. In another record, his relationship is "donné", suggesting he is the illigitimate son of the late Pierre. It remains to be determined if there was more than one Jaques Mayor still alive with adult children between 1575 (the first mention of Pierre fils de feu Jaques nourry de feu Pierre Mayor -- this Jaques reported alive as late as November, 1569) and 1600. Jaques dit Mathey was one, son of the late Claude Mayor and Hennarde, and brother of Claude dit Mathey whose wife was Marguerite Mayor, daughter of the late Jaques. There was also a Jaques Mayor who had died before 1580, whose widow was George (Baudin?), aunt of Jaques Baudin whose testament was recorded that year, though he have been the same one who had died before 1575. Humbert Mayor (or Pierre?) had a son Jaques, minister at Oulens and Lignerolles, who is mentioned several times before he makes partition with his brother Felix in 1603. No children have been attributed to him, at least not in the parish of Bière.
While several records have Marguerite as daughter of Pierre, several other records name her father as Jaques and her brother as Anthoine. Anthoine appears to be brother of Pierre identified as son of Jaques nourry of Pierre. No record has yet been found to prove that Pierre, Anthoine's brother, is the same Pierre identified as dit Mathey.
The Marguerite Mayor who married Claude Mayor was the daughter of a Pierre Mayor whose widow was Francoise and whose other children were Egrège Anthoine (d. 1595), Egrège Michel, and Pernon. The other Anthoine, son of Jaques, was certainly alive after 1595 and may have been the Chatelain d'Yens as late as 1608. This Anthoine had a brother Michel and apparently Pierre as well. Their father Jaques died before 1585, and may be the Jaques Mayor of Ballens whose widow George was the aunt of Jaques Baudin (testament 1580). This Jaques seems to have been alive as late as 1573.
The elder notary Claude Mayor who died before 1569 was a son of Jaques, who was apparently the son of Pierre. It is not clear from the records examined so far whether this Jaques was still alive circa 1570. The 1622 terrier of Ballens (ACV FH 175) traces all of the property it enumerates back to a previous terrier of 1570, compiled by George Dunant and Pierre Tripod, and none of those citations mention "Jaques nourry de Pierre Mayor". However, the records of the younger notary Claude Mayor, covering the same period, seem to cite only "Jaques nourry de Pierre Mayor", and no other Jaques Mayor who was a son of Pierre. While we have not yet been able to locate the terrier from 1570, a related terrier, Fh 155 (fol. 197), contains a "reconnaissance" for the Monod family that was witnessed 14 mar 1569 by, among others, Jaques nourry de feu Pierre Mayor de Ballens, as well as Jaques Mayor resident of Aubonne, proving that these were two different people.

Bourgeois of Aubonne in 1573 and 1580. He recognized property from his late wife Pernette Darzier on behalf of their children Michel, Jean, and Jeanne 24 dec 1580 (ACV Fh 164 fol. 68, commissaire Antoine Mayor), and also for his brother Antoine Mayor and his wife Françoise Darzier, sister of Pernette. All of the property was from the Darzier family, so nothing further is revealed in this reconnaissance concerning the parentage of this Jaques. The relationship to the Darzier family immediately suggests a connection with the elder notary Claude Mayor, whose wife was Pernette, daughter of Pierre Bellossat and Claudaz Darzier. Claudaz was the aunt of Pernette Darzier. However, the father of the elder notary Claude Mayor is believed to be Jacobo or Jaques Mayor who was already an adult in 1507, evidently from the wrong generation to be also the same Jaques Mayor who married Pernette Darzier. The identity of Antoine, brother of Jaques, is also unclear. He was certainly not the same Antoine Mayor who was the commissaire in 1580, nor was he the Discret Antoine Mayor who first appears as an adult a few years later.
His son Michel sold a large number of properties at Ballens on 19 and 26 mar 1587 (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/6 fols. 40-49v). One of these transactions also mentions a son Pierre.
Another reconnaissance for approximately the same parties is found in the terrier Fh 158 (fol. 23v, 24 oct 1573), Jaques Mayor again acting for his children Michel, Jean, and Jeanne, with Blaise de la Pierre acting for his children Jean and Pernette, and with Anthoine Mayor acting for his wife Françoise Darzier. Even earlier (Fh 153, fol. 71, 04 feb 1564), Jaques Mayor recognized property for his wife Pernette, as did Blaise de la Pierre for his wife. Françoise was represented by other relatives, so she had not yet married Antoine Mayor.

Unfortunately, the church records of Lignerolles prior to 1647 have not survived. It is very likely that later ministers Jaques and Isaac Mayor at Lignerolles and adjacent parishes (Chavornay, for one) were his sons or grandsons.
His is cited as minister at Lignerolles as early as 1590, and was definitely still the minister there in 1624, when he made a "reconnaissance" for property at Ballens (ACV Fh 175 fol 277v, dated 20 jan 1624). Other reconnaissances discovered so far, all indicating he was then minister at Lignerolles, are in the terriers Fg 125 (07 jan 1605 represented by his brother Félix, and 04 oct 1603), Fg 132 (03 mar 1624 represented by his brother Félix), and Fh 173 (19 jun and 03 aug 1618). Further, the Dictionnaire Historique, Géographique et Statistique du Canton de Vaud (Martignier & de Crousaz, 1867) cites a transaction (p. 552) of 1625 in which Their Excellencies of Bern purchased Jaques Mayor's personal house at Lignerolles for 7000 florins, to be used as the residence of the successive ministers in that parish.

Identified as the brother of Claude Mayor whose father was Claude. First mention with dit name, 1569. As dit Mathey, connected with his sister Pernon and her husband Gabriel Vieux, known to be daughter of late Claude Mayor, 1569, and evidently already adult. It is likely there was a prior marriage, as Jaques Mayor whose brother was Claude Mayor had a daughter Marie who was married in 1580. This would likely put Jaques' birth before 1540 and his father's before 1515 (there is other evidence that places his father's birth date even farther back, since he was married and apparently already of the age of majority in 1529).
The name of the first (?) wife of Jaques Mayor dit Mathey is revealed in a document of 06 dec 1574 (Claude Mayor, notary at Ballens, ACV DB 26/3 fol. 55v) in which Jaques acknowledges receipt of 120 florins and other considerations from the unnamed brothers of his wife Claudaz, daughter fo the late Sermoz Baudin. In the corresponding minutaire (DB 26/4 fol. 87) we find that the heirs of the late Sermé Baudin have the alias Termoz. Jaques received a further 83 florins for the settlement for the second marriage of Clauaz Cristin 14 feb 1582 (DB 26/5 fol. 37). He acknowledged receipt of another 247 florins from his wife Claudaz Cristin de Bogneuz 03 dec 1586 (DB 26/3 fol. 125).

In the terrier ACV Fg 328, he is the subject of a reconnaissance, fol. 66v, dated 19 dec 1657, Egrege Jean Mayor de Ballens au nom de ses enfans heus de feu Jeanne fille d'Egrege Isaac Monod sa femme, including the statement that some of the properties came from the inheritance of Judith, fille de Pierre Munier, soeur uterine of the said Jeanne Monod, which confirms our analysis of Jeanne's origins.
