In 1570, a Jaques Monod is noted as a brother of Anthoine Monod. By 1583, there are a few mentions of "heirs" of Jaques Monod in the records of the notary Claude Mayor (e.g., ACV DB 26/3 fol. 87, 21 jan 1583). It is not known if these refer to the same person, but no evidence of an additional person of the same name has so far come to light.

It is speculated that this Jaques might be the brother of Urbain Monod cited in 1696. Whoever he was, he was probably born during the long gap in the church records at Bière, perhaps about 1652 in order to have reached a marriagable age by 1677. His marriage record has also escaped detection. Could it have been at Gimel, where the records were poorly kept at this era, and suffered later damages that have made many of them illegible? Since one of the sponsors at the baptisms of his children was the Châtelain de Mont, we might be able to locate the Croutaz family in the records of the parish of Gimel.
The case for Jaques being a brother of Urbain is not entirely speculative. Jaques Monod, of Berolle, was cited as a brother of Urbain in 1696 (in a minutaire of Estienne Vincent Mayor, notary at Morges, ACV DK 76). In the 1690's, we find Jaques Monod and his nephew Isaac Monod among the sponsors at several baptisms. And on 03 jun 1710, at Berolle, Jaques Monod, conseiller de Berolle, appears along with the minister Isaac François Monod (apparently a son of Urbain Monod) at the baptism of Jean Isaac Monod, son of Egrège Jean Pierre Monod, Châtelain de Berolle and Lieutenant de Lavigny. Jaques Monod is identified in this record as the grandfather of the infant Jean Isaac. It is very tempting to identify Isaac, the nephew of Jaques, with Isaac François, but a Jaques Monod seems to have died about 1694.

This may be the late Jaques Monod of Ballens whose sons Isaac, Urbain, Louis, Pierre, and Jean François made a reconnaissance 25 jan 1678 (ACV Fg 159 fol. 66v) with the advice and authorization of their step-mother Susanne Golaz. (Or, perhaps Susanne was the step mother only of the eldest of them, Isaac—the wording is ambiguous on this point.) The baptisms of these sons have not been found, nor has the name of the first wife of Jaques. It is entirely possible that his first marriage and the births of all of his children occurred during the gap in the baptismal records at Bière, 1652-1670.
Perhaps arguing against this interpretation is a statement in the same reconnaissance (still on fol. 66v) that Jaques Monod "leur pere" had made a reconnaissance on 23 dec 1622 for the terrier now identified as ACV Fh 175, but at least some of the sons in 1678 must have been minors under the age of 25, otherwise they would not have been advised by their step-mother. The reconnaissance in question is that of Eg. Jaques Monod with his wife Urbaine Mayor, daughter of Pierre Mayor. This Jaques was the son of Gabriel son of Jaques Monod. However, he cannot be our present Jaques Monod, because Urbaine Mayor, widow of Eg. Jaques Monod, next married Urbain de la Harpe in 1626. No children are presently known for the elder Jaques Monod and Urbaine Mayor, but it seems most likely that the present Jaques must have been his son, and that the passage on fol. 66v should have read "leur grandpère". (Also, we would have expected the passage to read "ledict Jaques Monod", to confirm that he was the same person already mentioned as the father of the four sons. The use of "ledict" at this period is nearly obligatory, even when the meaning would have been prefectly clear without it.) Since there seem to be many omissions and errors in the church records of the parish of Bière, we show the present Jaques as the son of the elder Jaques Monod and his wife Urbaine Mayor, pending further documentation.

He must be the "Discret Jaques Monod notayre, fils d'honneste Gabriel fils de feu Jaques Monod de Ballens" who made a "reconnaissance" 23 dec 1622 in his own name and that of his wife Urbaine daughter of the late Pierre Mayor (ACV FH 175 fol. 102v). Further, his wife Urbaine Mayor had a sister Jeanne, and the same Jaques Monod notary made another "reconnaissance" naming his "belle mère" (mother-in-law) Claudaz Barbey, widow of the late Pierre Mayor 27 dec 1622 (fol. 71).

He is called Jaques Isaac Monod several times, and also at least twice Jaques Gabriel Monod. There is one for a Jaques Isaac (1701), and there are at least two for the combination Jaques Gabriel. He might be the one baptised in 1680, son of Jean Pierre Monod and Louise Monod. However, at the baptism of his daughter Jeanne Françoise 03 jul 1740, one of the sponsors is Jean Monod, grandpère. It seems likely that he was born somewhat later, perhaps around 1700. The likely baptism, then, is for Jaques Isaac, son of Jean Monod and Jeanne Françoise Pelichet, at Ballens, 20 nov 1701.
The only death record that could be his, 03 sep 1765, under the name Jaques Isaac Monod, omits his age but bears a marginal notation, "Invalide du Roi de France". This would have to mean that he had served in the army of France then was hospitalized or pensioned. Did he actually die in France, or did he return to Ballens?
