The family name is usually spelled Knobel, Knobele, or Knobler in the church records at Bière, but the records of the German-speaking congregation at Aubonne usually say Knubel. The origins of the Knobel or Knubel families mentioned in the neighboring parishes are given as either Zweisimmen or Sankt Stephan, in the area near Saanen, in the Canton of Bern.

At Bière, we found very little information about the family in the church records. Possibly the best clue is a burial record 20 oct 1778 for Anthoine Knobele of "Saint Stephe", age about 90 years. That would put his birth date about 1688, old enough to be the father or even the grandfather of Anne Marie. Her burial record calls her Jeanne Marie Knobele, and places her birth date about 1727. There is also a burial record for a Jean Knobel, 01 dec 1791, age about 65, thus born about 1726.
