An Anthoine Monod is noted as brother of late Claude Monod, 1594. Also, 1570, are noted his brother Jaques Monod, and their sister-in-law Pernon, widow of Claude Monod and wife of Bastian de la Pierraz. A sister Thievennaz married Christophle son of Jaques de Geneve in 1570. In 1573, an Anthoine appears with Humbert Mayor as coadministrators for estate of Francois Monod, with Pierre Saudan l'ancien as tuteur of the heirs. Note document of 13 dec 1590, Anthoine Mayor (presumably the notary who died about 1595) to Gabriel son of late Anthoine Monod, and another to Gabriel son of late Jaques Monod.
The problem is that the three brothers Anthoine, Jaques, and Claude might just as well be children of Pierre son of Claude Monod. The evidence from the terriers is confusing and inconsistent.

As of 1584, there were two men identified as Claude Monod le jeune in the area around Bière. Both of these Claude Monods, both called "le jeune", appear in documents dated 23 jan 1584 in the records of the notary Claude Mayor (ACV DB 26). One was Claude, son of the late Claude Monod, married to Claudaz, daughter of the late Pierre Saudan (contract dated 24 dec? 1584; Pierre Saudan also had a son Bastian). The other was Claude, son of the late Pierre Monod—this Claude's sister Pernon had married Leonard Barbey. A few pages later, 09 aug 1584, we find what appears to be a sale by Claude Monod le jeune son of the late Pierre Monod, with his wife Gabrielle Barbey, selling to Michel Bodaz.
Since the wife of this Claude just two years later is called Louise Sodin (Saudan), we think Claudaz and Louise are the same person. However, it is not yet clear if she was the only wife of Claude. The same couple, this time called Claude Monod l'eysné and Louise Sodan, sold property that Louise had obtained by a partage (DB 26/6 fol. 15v, 04 sep 1586). Whoever this Claude may be, there seems to be no ambiguity about a transaction of 05 jan 1590 (DB 26/7 fol. 28), in which "Claude Monod le jeune fils de Pierre Monod procureur et charge ayant des hoyrs de feuz Claude Monod son frere l'eysné" sells property to Jaques Barbey de Ballens. A further transaction (fol. 30) removes any doubt: "Jean Jaques fils de Claude Monod l'eysné de Ballens" is assisted by "Claude Mono son oncle" de Ballens in a sale of property en la Byollete to Lyonnard Barbey.
A possible explanation, or else even more confusion regarding the two Claude Monods, both "le jeune", is implied in documents of the same notary from January, 1590, where we find a transaction in which Claude Monod son of Pierre is acting for the heirs of his brother Claude. Among the heirs is a son Jean Jaques Monod. Another document clearly says that Jean Jaques is the son of the late Claude Monod, and that he is advised by his uncle Claude Monod. We might suppose that Pierre Monod had, perhaps by two different wives, two sons named Claude. They would be known as Claude the elder and Claude the younger. This situation is not frequently encountered, but it does happen in this period. The first Claude must have married and produced a son Claude, who would thus be, but in a different sense, also Claude the younger. It is not yet clear if this is the explanation, or if there are still more Claudes whose records have become entangled.
After the death of his father, some records suggest that his uncle Claude Monod may have been called "Claude Monod l'eysné", instead of "Claude Monod le jeune filz de feu Pierre Monod". This transformation is logical, but potentially confusing. Or, was there yet another Claude Monod in Ballens? (See DB 26/5 fols. 79-89.)

While it appears that a Claude Monod belongs here, as the brother of Anthoine and Jaques, there is still considerable uncertainty about which of the various Claudes he is. Were the brothers Anthoine and Jaques, who settled with the third husband of the widow of the late brother Claude Monod in 1570, sons of Thivent Monod, apparently the same person as the Stephanus Cigoen alias Monod of earlier records? Some of the terriers suggest this solution, but there are so many inconsistencies in the terriers of the last half of the 16th Century on this point as to defy interpretation.
The best evidence is that Anthoine and Jaques Monod, brothers, made a settlement 21 jan 1570 regarding the marriage of their late brother Claude to Pernon, who next married Jaques de Genève and then Bastian de la Pierraz. On 27 nov 1570, Christophle son of Jaques de Genève, with his wife Thievennaz daughter of the late Claude Monod, received full payment for a donation to her marriage contract by Jaques Monod (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/1 fols. 118v and 148v). With the plausible assumption that the parties are in fact the same, it would seem that Claude Monod had a daughter Thievennaz by his first wife Pernon who had reached marriageable age by 1570, at about the same time that Pernon herself married Jaques de Genève. Thievenaz then married her step-brother Christophle de Genève, and her uncle Jaques Monod made a donation for her dowry. This scenario puts the marriage of Claude Monod about 1552, about right for the dates of his father Stephanus Cigoen alias Monod.

Was the Claude l'aisné who was the son of Pierre the same person as the late Claude Monod of the 1560's and 70's? At first, this idea seemed plausible. However, we find Claude Monod l'eysné and Claude Monod le jeusne appearing together 29 aug 1582 at the marriage of Abraham son of Pierre Convers to Hennarde or Lyennarde daughter of the late Pierre Barbey (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/3 fol. 72v). This second Claude Monod seems to have died by 23 jan 1584: an exchange of property at Ballens was recorded by the same notary (fol. 91v) between Claude Monod le jeune son of the late Claude Monod de Ballens, and Lyonnard Barbey for his wife Pernon daughter of the late Pierre Monod of Ballens, a transaction that also mentions Claude Monod le jeune son of the late Pierre Monod.
A Claude Monod who had married Pernon was dead before 21 jan 1570 (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/1 fol. 118v), when his brothers Antoine and Jaques of Ballens settled the prior marriage contract for Pernon with her new husband, Bastian de la Pierraz of Reverolle. In between, she had married Jaques DeGeneve, who promptly died. But the parentage of these three brothers is not mentioned directly. There are several citations in the terriers that seem to refer to these brothers, but they disagree as to the relationships. So far, nothing has been located that would require more than one Thivent Monod at Ballens in the 1580's.
The most obvious solution would be that the earlier Claude Monod and his brothers Antoine and Jaques were the sons of the earlier Thivent Monod, who was already dead by 1570. The evidence so far discovered is contradictory. More terriers will be examined in hopes of locating additional evidence. From the records of the notary Claude Mayor, we have to conclude that there were two Antoines, one whose brother Claude had died before 1570, and the other whose brother Claude "the elder" was alive as late as 1582.
Thus, for the moment, we still show the present Claude as the person called "Claude Monod l'aisné" to distinguish him from his younger brother "Claude Monod le jeune" (both sons of Pierre) and from his son also called "Claude Monod le jeune". Claude the elder, son of Pierre, is stated to be the late father of Jean Jaques Monod, still a minor, on 27 jan 1590 (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/7 fol. 30).

He is the Claude Monod le jeune son of the late Pierre Monod who appears in several documents of the notary Claude Mayor in 1584, at least once with his sister Pernon, wife of Leonard Barbey, and at least once with his wife Gabrielle Barbey. The other Claude le jeune cited in the same group of records, and in some cases on the same dates, is Claude Monod le jeune son of the late Claude Monod, with his wife Claudaz, daughter of the late Pierre Saudan (her brother was Bastian Saudan).
Gabrielle, widow of Claude Monod of Ballens, appears at a baptism 06 aug 1598. She also appears in a transaction of 15 mar 1599, apparently as a widow, in a sale of property to Gabriel son of Antoine Monod. The sellers in this transaction (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/8 fol. 101) are described as "Thivent Monod, Lyonnard Barbey, Gabriel fils de Jaques Monod, et Gabrielle Barbey", with the further stipulation that Thivent is acting for "des enfans de Claude son frere", and that Gabrielle is acting "de ses enfans". The property was at Ballens, en la Vy d'Aubonne, held jointly by the sellers ("indivise entre lesdits vendeurs"), adjacent to Emé Lambert on three sides and to "des Mayor" de joux, sold for 15 florins. While it is not certain whether Thivent was acting for the children of his brother Claude the elder or of his other brother Claude the younger, this transaction certainly alerts to two or more unknown children of Claude Monod the younger and Gabrielle Barbie, who would have been baptised during the gap in the church records from about 1584 to 1597. (It does, however, seem more likely that Thivent was acting for the children of Claude the elder, since the children of Claude the younger would not seem to need two representatives! How were the sellers related? The two Claudes, and therefore also Thivent, were sons of the late Pierre Monod. Lyonnard Barbey had married (1583) Pernon Monod, daughter of the same Pierre Monod. If they owned the property jointly, it may be that they represented all of the heirs of this Pierre Monod. Therefore, was Gabriel son of Jaques Monod another such heir? And was the buyer, Gabriel son of Antoine Monod, yet another heir? If this were true, it would tie disparate branches of the Monod family together, but there is still not enough evidence to support this conclusion.)
After considering the many relationships that are stated or implied in the records of the notary Claude Mayor, it became apparent that one possible explanation is that Pierre had two> sons named Claude. The first, Claude the elder, died, leaving sons Claude the younger and Jean Jaques. The second, also called Claude Monod the younger, but for a different reason, was still alive when he advised his nephew Jean Jaques, son of the late Claude Monod, 27 jan 1590—if we have correctly deciphered and intrepreted this notary's sometimes difficult hand (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/7, fol. 30). Another transaction (fol. 28) dated 05 jan 1590 makes the case even more explicitly: "Claude Monod le jeusne filz de Pierre Monod, procureur et charge ayant des hoyrs de feuz Claude Monod son frere l'eysné" sells property to Jaques Barbey.
In addition to several of these documents that would be difficult to interpret any other way, there appears to be one in which this conclusion is stated explicitly, though not as clearly as we might wish. In the minutaire of Claude Mayor identified as ACV DB 26/5, fol. 2v, there is a settlement between two parties. These parties, who had instituted a legal process, were "Bernard Salliet agissant tant a son nom que de Alexandre son nepveux d'une part, et Claude Monod l'eysné et Claude Monod le Jeusne de Ballens d'aultre part." The document reports that Bernard Salliet "demandoyt audits Monod restitution du mariage de feue Marguerite Sallier seur dudit Bernard feue femme de feuz Pierre Monod pere desdits Claude Monod" The settlement amounted to 25 florins to be paid to Bernard. The word transcribed as "desdits" is written "desd", with the usual downward stroke at the end indicating "dit" or "dits". The fact that it is clearly spelled "des" rather than "de" means literally that Pierre Monod was the father of both Claude the younger and Claude the elder.
The restitution of the marriage settlement should have occurred because the wife died before producing a child. Therefore, we conclude that Marguerite Salliet or Sallier was not the mother of the children of Pierre Monod. Moreover, the nephew Alexandre was most likely the child of a prior marriage of Marguerite.
Of the children of Claude Monod and Gabrielle Barbie, nothing further is known; they may well have died before reaching adulthood.
