He is usually known as Monod in the terriers after about 1580, and often as Mayor alias Monod prior to that. This François Mayor "autrement Monnod" had died before 1570, leaving daughters Claude and Genon, whose guardian was Pierre son of the late Nicolas Saudan (reconnaissance of 15 jun 1570 in a terrier attributed to Egrèges Dunant and Tripod, cited 24 dec 1622 in a later terrier ACV Fh 175 fol. 24). We think we found the daughter Genon cited in a document recorded by the notary Claude Mayor 13 oct 1583, a sale by Lyonnard Bachellard of Pampigny with his wife Genon, daughter of the late François Monod of Ballens, to Humbert Mayor.
The details of the chain of ownership reported in the terrier Fh 175 have not been worked out. However, the parcels for which the reconnaissance of 24 dec 1622 were made have a suggestive history. They were owned in 1622 by Jean François son of the late Tivent Monnod of Ballens. The title descended in two parts, the first from Antoine, Claude, and Tivent Monnod, brothers (1570, but there are several different versions, supposedly all paraphrases from the same reconnaissance), and before that by Claude (or Pierre) son of Mondet Mayor. The second part was from Pierre son of the late Nicod Saudan acting as guardian of Claude and Genon, daughters of the late François Mayor "autrement Monnod", and before that by Pierre son of the (same?) late Mondet Mayor. Did the descendants of this "Mondet Mayor" become the Monod family of Ballens? The family name Monod is supposed to have derived from the given name Aymon or Aymonet, and it seems likely that "Mondet" also comes from the same source.
The fact that the guardian of his children was Pierre Saudan is suggestive. Could François have been another son of the Pierre Monod who had two sons named Claude? Bearing on this question is a settlement recorded 06 nov 1582 by Claude Mayor, notary at Ballens (ACV DB 26/3, fol. 84v, and also in the corresponding minutaire DB 26/5 fol. 52v)), in which Lyonnard Bachellard of Pampigny with his wife Jenon Monod request payment from Claude Saudans her uncle and formerly her guardian. The arbiters were Louis Mayor, François Baudat, Jean Monod, and the notary himself, Claude Mayor. Claude Saudans was required to convey property and money to Bachellard and his wife. The simplest explanation is that François Monod had married a daughter of Nicod Saudan.
This François is apparently the son of an elder Franciscus Mayor alias Monod who was a son of Mondetus Mayor. The widow of the elder Franciscus was the subject of a "reconnaissance" 04 mar 1531 (Fg 52, fol. 167 ff): "Johanneta uxor Francisci Mayor alias Monod a patria absentis tanquam tutris et administratris Francisci Monod pupilli eorumdem Francisci et Johannete conjugum filii et Reymondus Poncyn des Vufflens Castro veluti tutor et administrator Petri et Johannete Monod pupillorum etiam fratrum filiorum quondam Johannis Mayor alias Monod dez Ballens..., de bonis et recognitione Petri Mayor filii quondam Mondeti Mayor dez Ballens ipsorum pupillorum germanorum quondam patrui per eiumdem Petrum Mayor patruum in manibus et extentis Aymoneti Pollens..." (the reference to Aymoneti Pollens is the terrier Fj 5). The reconnaissance of 1531 tells us ("pupillorum germanorum") that the younger François and the two children of the late Johannes Mayor alias Monod were first cousins, and that their paternal uncle ("patruum") was Petrus Mayor son of Mondetus Mayor.
Pierre Saudan "l'ancien" was still the guardian of the daughters of François Monod 06 feb 1573, when he sold property with the consent of Humbet Mayor and Antoine Monod, coadministrateurs (DB 26/4, fol. 59v).
The other daughter, Claude, may have been the one who married Henry son of the late Claudon de la Crousa of Chastel, at Essertines (parish of Gimel), 02 dec 1576. Her father is listed as François Monod of Ballens (though not listed as deceased), and there does not seem to be another man of this name from Ballens at this era. While the sequence of baptisms in the church records of Gimel is difficult to follow because of damage to the original registers, a large number of incomplete entries, and an astonishing number of "dit" names, we found no further record of Henry and Claude. Their absence in the settlement of 1582 suggests that they must have died by then.

Name is spelled Monnon in baptismal record of 1599, apparently identical to Monner in 1597, as same sponsor appears, Guillaume Rommain or Romanin of Ballens. A different Gabriel is noted as son of Jaques Monoux in 1601, in the same record naming the wife and baptising daughter Urbaine. It is now clear that here were two Gabriels at this time. The other one is dit Roguin or some similar name; it is not certain that the distinction was always observed, however!
The parentage of the Gabriel whose son was Elie Monod is confirmed in the terrier ACV FH 175 (fol. 61, 18 nov 1622).

Which Gabriel Monod was the one who married Elizabeth Barbille Asperlin before 1671? Whoever he was, he had a sister Jeanne Monod (they appear together as sponsors at a baptism in 1671, immediately before the baptism of Gabriel, son of Gabriel Monod and Elizabeth Barbille Asperlin). In all probability, he was either the present Gabriel, born in 1640, son of Félix, or else the Gabriel born in 1634, son of Augustin.
Information on the web site of the Société Genevoise de Généalogie says the present Gabriel, son of Félix Monod and Anne DeMonterjeau (a reading not supported by any of the various spellings of her name in the church records of Bière, unless we read "Montariod" as "Montarjod"), married first Marie Crinsoz, and second, Elizabeth d'Asperlin. This is certainly possible, but no sources are given. The same web site identifies Marie Crinsoz as the daughter of Antoine Crinsoz and Anne LeMarlet, a couple that baptised many children at Apples.
Based on the statement that Marie Crinsoz brought the fief of Froideville into the Monod family as part of her marriage settlement, and that Gabriel Monod "de Froideville" was the son of Félix, we resolve the question posed above, but so far without any primary sources. However, a transaction involving various parcels of land in the commune of Ballens, 02 mar 1736 (M. C. Mayor, notary of Aubonne), along with other documents in the registers of the same notary, show that Gabriel Monod, Capitaine, was Seigneur de Froideville and Conseigneur de Ballens and Yens, sharing the title to the latter two with his brother Isaac Monod. We have found one other mention of an Isaac who was the son of Félix Monod, but the reference more likely applies to the next generation, the sons of the present Gabriel. The other Gabriel, son of Augustin, did have a brother Isaac, baptised 11 jun 1639, with the full names of both parents specified. Thus, it is possible that the parentage of Gabriel Monod "de Froideville", as given here and in the published sources, many need to be revised. A necessary condition for resolving this and other questions is to establish the death dates and the specific titles that apply at each generation.
The Crinsoz genealogy does not supply any dates for Marie Crinsoz, but it does suggest that Gabriel Monod was a widower when he married her.
Even more confusion is added by the marriage at Cheseaux (ACV EB 25/3 p. 202) of "Monsieur Moineaus Seigneur de Ballens et Elizabet Dessaussure"... "au mois de Mars de l'année 1694 le 18 ou 19." If there was any doubt that the marriage involved Gabriel Monod, it is removed by the list of sponsors for the baptism of Gabriel, son of Gabriel Monod and Susanne "de Prelaz" 12 apr 1711 at Mollens. The sponsors included Gabriel Monod, Seigneur de Ballens, and Demoiselle Jeanne Elise de Saussure his wife. What is the correct order of the marriages of Gabriel Monod? If the middle Gabriel (born in 1671, son of the elder Gabriel and Elizabeth Asperlin) was already "Seigneur de Froideville" in 1711, then the marriage to Marie Crinsoz must already have been in the past, so that Marie would have to be the second wife, between Elizabeth Asperlin (before 1671) and Elizabeth de Saussure (1694). If we find Marie Crinsoz in any record after 1694, it must either be a different Marie, or else the Gabriel who married her was not the same Gabriel who married Elizabeth de Saussure.
Marie Crinsoz does indeed appear between 1671 and 1694. In 1692, she appears as a sponsor for a baptism at Ballens, as "Marie Crinsoz Dame de Ballens". From this we can deduce that her husband had become "seigneur de Ballens" by this date (or perhaps, co-seigneur).
A number of secondary sources say that Gabriel died in 1725, but no direct evidence has so far been discovered.
He was apparently the Gabriel Monodus, Ballensis, listed as a student at the Académie de Lausanne in 1655. He seems to have had a brother Jaques, with whom he appeared before a notary 01 may 1680 (ACV DB 27). François Dumur, who prepared a research report on the Monod family in 1971 (ACV Dossier Monod), suggested that this Jaques is the one who was a student at the Académie de Lausanne in 1674 (thus likely born around 1660), and also Juge Consistorial in 1704. Jaques died before 02 apr 1704, since on that date, Gabriel Monod, seigneur de Ballens, appeared in his own name and as heir of the late Madame Marie Crinsoz dame de Ballens and of his (late) brother Mr. le Juge Monod (ACV DK 76, minutaire).

His marriage to Susanne Crousaz de Prélaz is mentioned in many secondary sources. However, he seems to have married first to Anne Etiennaz Asperlin, unless the "Gabriel Monod de Froideville" intended in the record of the baptism for their son David Samuel refers to the father of the present Gabriel. The marriage record does not specify parentage or titles.
The baptism of the next son, yet another Gabriel, son of Gabriel Monod Seigneur de Froideville and Damoiselle Susanne de Prélaz, is far more detailed, and rules out the possibility that the Gabriel who married Anne Etiennaz Asperlin is the father of the present Gabriel:
A hint about the parentage of Anne Etiennaz is contained in the following minute recorded 27 aug 1709 by the notary Daniel Marmet (ACV DK 69/12): "Vertueux & Provide Gabriel Monod Seigneur de Froideville scachant etc. a admodié pour neuf années à la St. Martin commenceant... à honnorable Rodolph Zseller (?) du Cebetal (Siebethal) à present demeurant Valet sur la Montagne de Leurs Excellences du Chasteau d'Aubonne... assavoir deux granges & possessions qui en dependent appellées Les Granges des Rappes, procedées de feu Monsieur de Balaigue, situs sus Espalinges, que ledit Seigneur a d'heritage de feu Madame sa femme..." Monsieur de Ballaigues was most likely the father of Anne Etiennaz. The record does not pertain to Gabriel's father, who was Seigneur de Ballens but not Seigneur de Froideville.
The same property at Les Râpes, or part of it, figures in a lettre de bourgeoisie admitting Gabriel Monod, Seigneur de Froideville, to citizenship in Lausanne:
(AVL D 441/1 fol. 154v-155v:)

Apparently listed as Jean Gabriel Monod with wife Jeanne Guion of Ballens 22 sep 1611. A "Rynard" (?) Monnon, daughter (?) of Gabriel, baptised 15 feb 1599, may be another of his children. This child probably does not belong to the other Gabriel Monod, who had baptised a son Guillaume on 21 jan 1599. "Rynard" was probably not a twin of Guillaume, because twins were almost always baptised on the same day.
