"Paraphe" or notarial signature of Estienne Favre, 1577
(ACV Fh 161, Chapelles d'Aubonne)
Entries in the church register at Gimel specify Estienne Favre's association with Gimel. He served as a Commissaire (designation of a notary who compiles "terriers" or "reconnaissances" of land ownership), and in the course of these duties he is described repeatedly as the son of Jaques Favre of Gimel.
The earliest mention of his death that has come to our attention is a transaction recorded by Claude Mayor, notary at Ballens, dated 24 feb 1600, in which a parcel of land at Gimel "prez Monthoux" is noted as being adjacent to property of the heirs of the late Estienne Favre.
He is credited with a number of terriers, but these are in different hands, with different spellings, organization, syntax, etc. It is possible, however, that he really was responsible for most of these, but employed a number of clerks to prepare the documents. The terrier that appears to give the most information about him, and which is also credited to him in spite of the absence of any evidence beyond the small label glued at a later date to the spine of the volume, is identified as ACV Fh 34. This terrier enumerates an enormous number of properties at Gimel for which Estienne and his brother François owed annual "censes", "pensions", etc. to the Baron of Aubonne, and in the course of which many relationships are revealed.
Documents of Jean Barral, notary at Morges, note at least one transaction dated 01 oct 1600 between Discret David Favre of Rolle acting for himself as well as his brothers (not named), heirs of the late Ege. Estienne Favre, notary and bourgeois of Aubonne, to Ege. Gabriel Tripod. The realization that Estienne's second wife was the widow of the elder Gabriel Tripod makes this transaction especially intriguing. Further, David Favre seems to have married to a Pernette Tripod. Perhaps this was a double wedding, where a widow and her daughter married a widowed father and his son.
The terrier Fh 205 is described in the inventories of the ACV as the work of Pierre and Gabriel Tripod, brothers, commissaires, and of Pierre and Etienne Favre, from Gimel, notaries. But who was this Pierre Favre? The terrier dates from 1558. It is possible that Pierre was another brother who died soon after, leaving no heirs. So far, no other mention of this Pierre has been found, but it would be logical to look for him in the terriers of the districts of Aubonne and Morges about this time.
[2933] A later hand has added "des deux frères" above this marriage, apparently on the assumption the Estienne Favre was the br A later hand has added "des deux frères" above this marriage, apparently on the assumption the Estienne Favre was the brother of the groom in the next marriage, François son of the late Jaques .... (conceivably the name says Fabvre!).

The terrier prepared by Estienne Favre in 1583 (ACV Fh 38, especially fol. 44v-50v) for the Noble de Martine family identifies Jaques Favre, father of Estienne, as a maréchal of Gimel who purchased property there in the years 1543-1550. There is no mention of his origins, his wife, or other relatives. A number of people in this community are revealed in the same terrier to have come from Faucigny or the Tarentaise. A related terrier (ACV Fh 34), although it runs to 552 pages, seems to contain no dates whatever, but it gives additional details on Jaques Favre and his sons.
However, the terrier Fh 18 (fol. 6v, dated 15 dec 1552, itself an annotated copy of Fh 17, fol. 3v), a volume of "reconnaissances" relating to holdings of the noble de la Porte family at Gimel circa 1550, with later annotations, shows that Jaques Favre was in fact the son of Pierre de Genève of Gimel. The document describes the holdings of "Jaques filz de Pierre de Genève aultrement Favre de Gimel". In the margin at the top of the document is a later notation similar to those on other reconnaissances in this volume, describing the later history of the property. In this case, the notation is conclusive: "Ledit Jaques Favre est decedé et a laissé Discret Estienne et Legier Favre, ledict Legier a vendu sa portion audict Estienne Favre lequel est decedé et a laissé Discret David Michel et Bernard ses enfans ... par indivis". This inscription makes explicit what we had already guessed from Fh 34 and Fh 38, that Légier Favre must have sold his share of his father's estate to his brothers Estienne and François. Reading between the lines here, François must not have left descendants.
The only surviving pages of the terrier Fg 273 are the répertoire, and even that is probably incomplete. The fragment is believed to date from about 1540-1542 (perhaps on the basis of dated citations of it in later terriers?). The commissaire appears to have been Egrège Jehan Poupuz of Rolle. In spite of its present condition, the répertoire is a useful inventory of the landowners circa 1540. Among others, the list includes at Gimel "Jaques filz de feu Pierre de Genefve alias Billiard mareschal".
Other records note that Pierre Vacherand, grandfather of Jaques de Genève alias Favre, was himself a maréchal. Jaques must have learned his trade from his grandfather.
Jaques was presumably still alive in 1564, according to an "abergement" of that year, a lease of property to "Jaques Geneve dit Favre", at Gimel (ACV IB, layette 297B, 9711er — this document has not yet been examined, and some dates from the "Inventaire Blanc" have been found to be incorrect when compared with the documents themselves). The same series (IB, layette 297B, 973) contains a similar document, whereby the same Pierre Quisard purchased proper "es Closes" from François Billiard in 1565. As a result of a revision of the cataloguing of the Inventaire Blanc, these two documents are now identified as ACV IB B 971/1 and 973; neither one has been examined.
