Once we realized that Henri de Mandrot's account of the Bégoz family (Recueil des généalogies vaudoises, 1912) had combined two separate Gabriels (the notary and the cordonnier who were contemporaries in the 1570's), it became clear that there must be at least one more Gabriel. The cordonnier is named as the son of Etienne, son of Pierre, in the terrier for the property formerly owned by the Confrérie du Saint Esprit of Aubonne, 1578, and the document was recorded by the notary Gabriel Bégoz, thus proving that there were two men of the same name. De Mandrot says that the Gabriel who was a minor in 1531, and was later Vidomne de Morges circa 1546 left two sons, Gabriel and Jean Jaques. In fact, the citations provided by de Mandrot suggest that Gabriel died in 1546, but he also states that "en 1548 il rend des comptes de son vidomnat, au nom des nobles de Menthon". This seems illogical, and may be a misinterpretation of the original documents, which are not further identified. In 1546, Noble Marie de Gilliet or Gilliez, guardian of the children of Gabriel Bégoz, appeared before the city council of Morges to nominate François Mandrot as the next Vidomne of Morges, and the phraseology seems to presume that Gabriel had died. But if he left sons Gabriel and Jean Jaques, it does not seem possible that Jean Jaques could have survived until 1645 (as stated by de Mandrot), and we have already seen that de Mandrot has wrongly identified the son Gabriel with the cordonnier. (Louis de Charrière later surmised that Gabriel Bégoz must have had some other reason for giving up the vidomnat of Morges, as accounts were submitted in his name for 1546, 1547, and 1548. But that does not explain why Marie de Gilliet would be identified as guardian of his children in 1546, when those children would seem to have no interest in the proceedings. Based on the other citations, it is barely possible that the accounts for those years could have been prepared by Gabriel the son. Gabriel the father could have married before age 25 (thus still technically a minor in 1531, but already married and with a son Gabriel born about 1528. The son would then have to become a notary, following in his father's footsteps, at the age of about 18-20. Both of these contingencies are possible; the requirement that a notary should have reached the age of 25 was not established until 1762 by Their Excellencies of Bern. Further research in the terriers should eventually clarify this confusing situation.

The church registers at Vufflens-le-Château contain a "Rolle de Familles" dated 20 dec 1619. That list includes Lorent Convers, his wife Gabrielle Bégoz, and her daughter Olivière Billard, suggesting a previous marriage. The rest of the entry is somewhat ambiguous, but mentions Anne Marie Girouz (grand-daughter, but of whom?) and Jean Pierre Billard.

It is very likely that the order of the wives, from secondary sources, is wrong. Judith Elizabeth Barbille Asperlin, listed as the first wife, is almost certainly the Elizabeth Barbille Asperlin who married Gabriel Monod before 1671. If she married Gabriel Monod as the widow of Isaac François Bégoz, Louise Forel must have been the first wife of Bégoz, not the second. Judith is listed as the mother of the first two children listed here; the baptism of the third child has not been located.
Another problem is the death date of Isaac François Bégoz. If he died in 1687, then Judith Elizabeth Barbille Asperlin could not be the wife of Gabriel Monod. Was there another Elizabeth Barbille Asperlin? Or were there two men named Isaac François Bégoz, perhaps cousins?
