Birthdate is based on age at death of 90 years. That would put his birth between 14 jan 1684/85 and 13 jan 1685/86, 10 months before his father's second marriage and 19 months before that second wife should have had her first child. On the face of it, this also puts his mother's death somewhere in the same period. However, age at death in town records does not seem very reliable. A search of records in Portsmouth, NH is needed. Because Richard Uran died after 1771, none of his children or grandchildren were involved in the family deed of 1771.
The first record of Richard Uran is his marriage in Haverhill, MA in 1717. By 1725, he was one of the first settlers of Penacook (Concord), NH. He was in Concord the winter of 1726, and drew lots 6, 8, and 42 in the division of land there. At the time of his second marriage in Newbury, 1742, he was still listed as a resident of Concord. After that marriage, he is believed to have remained in Newbury, and died there in 1776. Some of his children were baptized at Ipswich, but James and Jonathan's baptisms have not been located, possibly because the family was then in Concord.
Essex Co., MA deeds, vol. 119, p. 39, shows Richard Urin and Sarah Urin, spinster, selling land and buildings in Ipswich 11 apr 1752. This transaction needs further study to determine how the land may have been acquired. The later history of this couple needs more investigation. C. C. Whittier missed the record in Newbury of their son Benjamin. Assuming the death record there in 1813 is in fact his, we might expect to find additional deeds or probate records.
The account of his life demonstrates how loosely town boundaries were treated in early records, or else how often families moved from one town to another. The research of C. C. Whittier on the Urann Family of New England was very thorough; however, it is possible that further research will eventually fill in some of the gaps in the wanderings of this family.
Further attention to details of the various land transactions may help establish the death date of his first wife and possibly the second also.
The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire suggests that Richard if not actually the son of John Uran, noting that he is not mentioned in any of the family deeds or divisions, and that he was sued in 1717 at Haverhill for an unpaid board bill incurred in Boston in 1716. However, he does not seem to belong to any other known lineage.
Son Jonathan is accepted here, following C. C. Whittier's suggestion in The Urann Family of New England. No other parentage has been proposed. More information is needed to be sure he really fits.

Royal Uran purchased federal land in what is now Kankakee Co., IL in 1846, adjacent to land owned by his brother Jonathan Uran. The land was then in Will Co., near the town of Bourbonnais. However, Royal does not seem to be present in the 1850 census there. An account in possession of Dick Uran may indicate that Royal was planning to move to Iowa with the McDougall's. He is believed to have died in the vicinity of Rock Island, Illinois, on his way to visit the family of his brother-in-law John McDougall, in Clinton Co., Iowa. But, if this is what happened, was his body really returned to Kankakee Co., where there was a tombstone (now lost) in the Van Meter Cemetery? It would be worthwhile to look for a probate record in Kankakee Co., in case he did not sell his land there prior to heading west.
Eventually, Royal Uran was found in the 1850 census (where the difficult script caused him to be indexed under the surname Wean by Ancestry.com) in Madison Co., Iowa (p. 148), with his wife Mary A. and daughter Cynthia H. There was also a state census enumeration in 1851, listing Royal Uran (but indexed by Ancestry.com as Rogal Uran) heading a household of 5 persons. Notes in the 1915 History of Madison County, Iowa (pp. 52 and 83) place Royal Uran in the county as of 07 jul 1851 (paid $3.75 by the county commissioners for work on a road survey) and 01 oct 1851 (as Secretary of School District 1, South Township, reporting that there were 43 children of school age in his district, but no school).
With this information, we think the story gleaned from earlier accounts needs to be turned on its head. Royal must have traveled from Madison Co., Iowa due east to the Rock Island area to meet the family of his brother-in-law John McDougall, who about that time settled in Clinton Co., Iowa, about 20 miles upstream from the Rock Island area. Royal's widow and daughter evidently traveled back to the Kankakee area, where she married Andrew Purcell in 1853, then returned to Madison Co., Iowa, likely to settle her husband's estate. It was presumably while she was in Illinois that the tombstone for Royal Uran was erected in the Van Meter Cemetery. (The stone was transcribed in the 1920's, but by the 1950's, the stones had been removed as part of a planned residential development, which was supposed to include relocating the burials. However, the burials were never moved, and the cemetery has now turned into a park. The stones were supposed to have been stored in some safe place, but no one alive today knows where.) The obituary of Royal's mother says that she, too, was to be interred at the Van Meter Cemetery (1882), but her marker is actually at the Mound Grove Cemetery, with other members of the Uran family. If her body was moved from Van Meter to Mound Grove at a later date, so that all the Uran burials could be together, why was Royal not moved as well? Or, was the marker simply a memorial, since it would have been extremely unusual to transport a body so far in 1852? Could it be that his body was not recovered and that he was swept away by the Mississippi River? Perhaps some clue to the sequence of events will be found in the probate records, which, however, have still not been located.
[204] named as executor in his father's will, 1843, so presumed to be at least 21 years old at that time. Since Royal's elder brother Jonathan was already in Illinois by then, Royal would have been the oldest son in NY.
[205] According to family history from Dick Uran, Royal died near Rock Island on his way to Iowa 04mar1852.
