Brothers Jacobus and Roletus Dutoit are mentioned several times as early as 1446 in the surviving records of Jean Saly senior, notary at Moudon. While it is possible to fit another generation in the line of descent, it seems most likely that the late Jacob Dutoit mentioned in the early 1500's is the same one who appears in the records of Saly. (He is mentioned around 1500 mainly as the deceased ancestor of various members of the family.)
The terrier ACV Fn 27 contains several interesting reconnaissances (1459-1461) for Jacobus and his brother Roletus, sons of the late Nycodus de Tecto, as well as one (fol. 5, 10 feb 1459) identifying the Nycodus who had married Francesia de Curia as the son of Jacobus, and thus the grandson of the elder Nycodus.

Mentioned (as an adult) in 1300 (P Cerjat (I) B 1377 as a neighboring land holder. This document, dated October, 1300, involves a sale by Jaquetus de Vercellis of Moudon to Johannes, Anselmus, and Humbertus de Costel, brothers. The date is certain (and not rendered defective by the accidental omission of additional words such as decimo sexto that would change the year from 1300 to 1316, etc.), because Jaquetus de Vercellis and a certain Francisus Sarragin mentioned in the text are known to have been active at Moudon around this time (various citations in the inventory of the ACV).
The same de Costel brothers are mentioned P Cerjat (I) B 1359, dated in 1354, in the history of a sale by Thomas de Glana (who had succeeded to some of the properties held by de Vercellis) to two brothers Johannodus and Murissetus de Costel (sons of Bersetus de Costel), which they paid for with money from the dowries of their wives. ( A later reconnaissance is P Loys 210, dated July 5, 1366.)
The later documents mentions various conditions probably from an intermediate date, involving clearing and cultivating the land; the two texts need to be compared side by side to work out some difficulties of the script and spelling.
ACV P Cerjat (I) B 590, dated 15 jan 1347, describes this family: Jordana his widow, their two sons Aubertus and Johannes, and Perretus, also deceased, brother of the late Johannes de Tecto, as well as Beatrix, wife of Aubertus de Tecto. All of those still living may be assumed to have reached the age of majority. The same family is described in 1343 as well (P Cerjat (I) B 1071): Johannes had died, and his widow Jordana and his eldest son Aubertus are mentioned, but not his son Johannes, presumably because he was still under the age of majority.
Is this the same Johannes de Tecto mentioned (as an adult) in 1300 (P Cerjat (I) B 1377)? The question depends on assessing when he died, and the ages of the other parties mentioned. Certainly the sons of the present Johannes should have been born before 1322. Moreover, Perretus, brother of the present Johannes, was also dead by 1347, but he was probably the Perretus de Tecto who also had the alias Grant (=Grand) in 1337 (P Cerjat (I) B 572). This Perretus was still alive in 1343 (P Cerjat (I) B 1071).
ACV P Loys 625, dated in 1344, involves two sons of possibly a different Johannes de Tecto who was already deceased: Jaquetus and Cono. Without further evidence, the most plausible solution seems to be to treat that Johannes as a separate person form the present Johannes, and to equate him with the one cited in 1300.

The evidence for Johannes or Johannetus as a son of Perretus de Tecto is indirect, but appears to be the only way his grand-daughter Jaqueta de Botens could be a "niece" (in fact, a grand-niece) of Stephanus de Tecto, as required by several documents (ACV P Cerjat (I) B 269, 270 (both in 1360), and 366 (dated in 1395). There are many mentions of one or more Johannes de Tecto in the 14th Century that lack any indication of possible relationships. It remains to be seen whether any of them can be connected with this particular Johannes through the associated properties mentioned in the individual transactions.

Apparently under the age of majority (actually identified as the "minor" brother of Perrodus de Tecto in the terrier ACV Ab 6, fol. 30v, the volume dated 1358-1361).
One goal of the analysis of the records from the 14th Century is to establish the identity of the Johannodus de Tecto who was the father of Nycodus de Tecto, by 1403 the only Dutoit head of household in Chavannes (Fn 9, fol. 1), apart from the branch known as Culart. In the preceding terrier, Fn 8 (fol. 28), there is a bit more information: here, Nychodus filius Johannodi dou Teyt is acting also for his niece Anthonia. The next earlier terrier, Fn 5, fol. 3v (1379), provides additional information: Johannodus is here acting for his absent nephew and niece, Roletus and Johanneta, children of Perrodus de Tecto dictus Balma. As a result of these citations, it is clear that the Johannodus de Tecto of the late 14th Century was the son of Coanerius or Cono de Tecto. The other Johannodus, son of Jaquetus or Jacobus, disappears from the records and apparently left no male descendants.

According to the terrier ACV Ab 6 (1358-1361, fol. 26v), son of Jaquetus de Tecto. Apparently the same man is called Johannodus in the same terrier, fol. 30v, which also mentions that he has inherited property from his mother Nycola.
If he is in fact the Johannodus de Tecto mentioned in some later records (e.g., the terrier Fk 2, first section, fol. 117, from 1386), he was succeeded by a son Anthonius de Tecto, a different person from the Anthonius Cular who was at least occasionally recognized as a Dutoit, descending from his grandfather Ansermus de Tecto. Until evidence to the contrary is discovered, Anthonius son of Johannodus is placed here.
However, personal names were used very flexibly at this time, and it is possible that another (?) "Johannodus" is in fact a son of Cono de Tecto and his wife Perrissona (P Loys 1192). The sources may be confused: P Loys 1192 (1348) has Perrissona appearing with her children Perrissona and Johannodus (both clearly written, and with a later mention of a son Perrodus), while P Loys 1047 (1347) mentions unnamed children of whom his widow Perrussona is acting as guardian, plus a daughter Johanneta and a son Perrodus (the latter by Cono's first wife, who is not named, and both apparently old enough that they are not under guardianship). P Loys 356 (1345), during Cono's lifetime, names his wife as Perrusseta. It is possible that the document of 1348 has misstated the names of the children, Perrissona and Johannodus instead of Johanneta and Perrodus!
As a result of these citations, it is clear that the Johannodus de Tecto of the late 14th Century was the son of Coanerius or Cono de Tecto. The other Johannodus, son of Jaquetus or Jacobus, disappears from the records and apparently left no male descendants.

The Dutoit family must have been in Chavannes-sur-Moudon prior to the development of surnames. A document preserved at the archives of Moudon, dated 31 aug 1356, involves a sale by Estienne Dutoit son of Pierre (or Perrod) Dutoit dit D'Ogo of Chavannes. Estienne was a merchant who resided at Estavayer. There is, however, a 100-year gap between him and the earliest connected genealogy we have been able to assemble for this family. Even earlier mentions are found in the collection of documents from the Cerjat family (ACV P Cerjat (I)). The earliest one discovered so far is dated 23 nov 1343, a sale by Nicod Dutoit and Jordanne widow of Jean Dutoit (who was the uncle of Nicod) to Nicollete, widow of Perrod Arma, all of Chavannes-sur-Moudon.
In early documents, the surname is most often rendered in Latin as De Tecto, a literal translation of "du toit". In the old script, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the small letters "c" and "t", so it is possible that some names such as "De Tetto" (Johannes De Tetto, salt merchant and citizen of Lausanne, mentioned in the testament of his widow Guillermette, 05 feb 1407, AVL PT 14/47) might also be read as De Tecto.
There is very clear evidence for his sons Jacobus and Roletus in the terriers (e.g., Fn 323, dates in 1493, where Jacobus had been succeeded by his son Petrus, and Roletus by his sons Guido and Nycodus). The evidence for the other children needs to be reviewed carefully, as it is possible that they belong to a later generation, or to a different Nycodus. The evidence for the son Johannes seems strong, as his only son Petrus had died before the terrier Fn 27 (1459), leaving no sons, so that his properties descended through Agnes, daughter of Petrus, who married twice. There is much less evidence for a son Petrus, and the dates are in question. Much more investigation is needed in the terriers and other documents from the 14th and 15th Centuries.
This Nycodus has now been identified as the son of Johannodus son of Cono de Tecto.
By about 1400 (terrier Fn 9, for example) , this Nicodus, son of Johannodus, is the only Dutoit head of household in Chavannes-sur-Moudon, and in fact, apparently the only male using the name de Tecto or Dutoit at that time. All the other branches of this family had "daughtered out" or had died out altogether. All the later Dutoit appear to be his descendants, unless there were some branches not mentioned at the end of the 14th Century who were living elsewhere and who later returned to Chavannes.
By 1459 (Fn 27), there were two Dutoit heads of household at Chavannes: Jacobus and Roletus. However, there are additional Dutoit who are mentioned in that terrier, namely Vuilliermus and Nycodus de Tecto, who appeared as witnesses to a reconnaissance. Jacobus and Roletus are identified (fols. 2-2v) as brothers, sons of Nicodus.

First mentioned as a son of Perretus de Tecto in ACV P Cerjat (I) B 1071, dated 23 nov 1343. A possible additional reference to this Nicolaus is found in Cerjat (I) B 590, dated 15 jan 1347, by which time a certain adjacent property was held by the heirs of the late Nycholaus de Tecto. No other members of this family called Nicolaus or Nicodus have been found in the surviving records during this period.

ACV P Cerjat (I) B 1071, dated 23 nov 1343, describes this family as well as that of his brother Johannes: Perretus had died, leaving sons Nycolaus (with wife Roleta) and Perrodus (with wife Mermeta); Johannes had died, leaving widow Jordana, and a son Aubertus. The other son of the late Johannes, also called Johannes, is not mentioned here, but appears only a few years later in B 590, an thus likely had not yet reached the age of majority in 1343. There is no mention of a widow of Perretus, so his wife likely was already dead by 1343. In 1344, there is mention of property held by his unnamed children (P Cerjat (I) B 1456).
In other transactions, Perretus de Tecto has a son Stephanus, although these transactions do not mention his siblings. The same Perretus, or a different one? Also, the late father of likely the same Stephanus is called Petrus (B 1464, dated in 1346). Absent other evidence, it seems most likely that there was one Stephanus, whose father was the present Perretus, and that this Stephanus had already taken his share of the inheritance, and so was not a party to further transactions involving the estate of Perretus. However, the available documents need to be reviewed in order to establish whether any evidence exists that would invalidate this conclusion.
In the terrier Fn 310, a compilation of bequests and other title for the Hospitale Pauperum Beate Marie Virginis de Melduno, one item (fol. 291v), dated in 1356, concerns 2/3 of a house in Moudon that had been donated for the benefit of the hospital by the Dutoit family (although the actual donation, fol. 290, is by Vuilliermus dictus May de Chavanes supra Meldunum—was he also a Dutoit, known under an alias?), the lease of which had been recently purchased from Stephanus son of the late Perretus de Tecto dictus de Ogo of Chavannes-sur-Moudon. Stephanus at this time was a merchant living in Romont,

According to the terrier ACV Ab 6 (1358-1361, fol. 26v), son of Coanerius de Tecto. Coanerius is presumably the same Coanodus de Tecto (Ab 6, fol. 30v), father of Perrodus, and in this instance, Perrodus is acting also for his younger ("minor") brother Johannes, who is absent. Is Coanerius / Coanodus the same person as Cono de Tecto in other records?
In the same terrier, the section for Chavannes-sur-Moudon ends with a list of the heads of families, all of whom owe a set of feudal taxes for the privilege of residing within the fief. The names recognizable as pertaining to the Dutoit family are: Roletus Cular, Johannes (likely the one also called Johannodus) de Tecto, Perrodus de Balma, and Clemens de Tecto. All of the other Dutoits mentioned in this section can be presumed to reside with someone else. However, the implication is that Perrodus de Balma (elsewhere de la Baume or similar; Baumaz or similar is a toponym in the area, possibly where this Perrodus resided at some point) is the present Perrodus, as the other one known to have resided at Chavannes in the recent past had been murdered.
By 1386, there is at least one mention of property held by the heirs of Perrodus Bouma (Fk 2, fol. 118v). Earlier, in 1363, he made a donation to the Hospitale Pauperum Beate Marie Virginis de Melduno (Fn 310, fol. 292v).
That this is the Perrodus who was known by the alias Bauma seems to be confirmed in P Cerjat (I) B 262, dated in 1360, as it involves a cense or debt owed by Perrodus dictus de la Bauma filius quondam Cononis dou Teil, and Johannodus filius quondam Jacobi dou Teil.
By 1403 (Fn 9, fol. 8), his children Roletus and Johanneta de Tecto dicti de Balma (again, confirming that de Tecto and de Balma are the same family) are mentioned as previous land holders, a certain property of theirs now held by Nycodus de Tecto filius quondam Johannodi de Tecto — possibly a clue as to the identity of this Johannodus, although it is equally possible that Nycodus had simply purchased the property, and was not a close relative of the de Balma branch.

Two different men called Perrodus de Tecto are mentioned in the terrier ACV Ab 6 (dates estimated 1358-1361). One of them, apparently this one, was the father of two daughters, Johanneta and Perrussona, still living and apparently still unmarried (fol. 26v). Their father had been murdered (fol. 27) by Johannes Morel, who was now a fugitive. The other Perrodus is stated (fol. 26v) to be the son of Coanerius de Tecto. It is possible that "Coanerius" is the same person elsewhere called Cono de Tecto, but more study is needed.
Johannes Morel is also called (Ab 6, fol. 27) Johannes Morel de Costel. In other words, he was a member of the de Costel family, apparently the son of the late Moretus de Costel who is also mentioned several times in Ab 6. There are several other examples in Ab 6 where a father's name is used in this way, a sort of alias or qualifier preceding the family name.
Also in Ab 6 (fol. 30), there is a puzzling entry for "Beatrix filia Mermeti Clerici, Johanneta et Perrussona eius sorores filie quondam Perrodi de Tecto". Taken literally, Beatrix would be a half sister of Johanneta and Perrussona, such that the mother of Beatrix was also the mother of the other two women. It is also entirely possible that the passage should read "eius soror", in which case the difficulty disappears. No evidence pertaining to this question has yet been located.
The significant point here, however, is that the line of this Perrodus had "daughtered out" with his death; there were no more Dutoit from this line.
Another view of the family is found in P Cerjat ((I) B 1071, dated 23 nov 1343, in which Perretus de Tecto is deceased, and his son Nycholaus (with his wife Roleta) participate in a sale to Nycholeta, widow of Perrodus Arma of Moudon, and her sons Anthonius and Jaquetus, with Perrodus, brother of Nycholaus, and Mermeta, wife of this Perrodus, acting as securities.

In the terrier ACV Fn 9, fol. 10 (the volume is dated approximately 1403-1406), Richardus Grinjos of Montet made a reconnaissance as administrator for his daughters Beatrix, Jaqueta, and Anthonia by his late wife Perrussona, daughter of the late Clemens de Tecto. There are a number of references to properties that this Beatrix holds in her own name, separately from her sisters, so she may already have been married. In the same terrier, fols. 198v-200, there is additional information about the Grinjos family: Richardus had a brother Nycodus, and they were the sons of Johannes Grinjo of Montet.

ACV Fn 5, fols. 3 and 3v (dates in 1379) mentions Roletus and Johanneta, children of Perrodus de Tecto dicti Balma, and these children are the nephews of Johannodus de Tecto, who would therefore likely be a brother of this Perrodus.

Cited in ACV P Cerjat (I) B 584 (1345), son of the late Anselmus de Tecto. ACV P Cerjat (I) B 585 (1345) also deals with the same Roletus de Tecto, but there is a later notation on the verso that calls him Roletus Cular, and mentions also his son Anthonius Cular, thus establishing that Roletus de Tecto and Roletus Cular are the same person.
The terrier Ab 6 (1358-1361), in the section for Chavannes-sur-Moudon (fols. 25-31), there is a reconnaissance by Roletus Cular filius Ansermeti de Tecto (fol. 26v), in which the identity of his wife is revealed, Beatrix filia Auberti de Costel. Further, a joint reconnaissance on the same page states that seven diverse members of the Dutoit family hold a certain property, the cense on which is payable to the heirs of Anthonius Cornuti. These seven are presumably the surviving heirs of a group of related families, as follows: Roletus son of Ansermus, Perrodus son of Coanerius, Johannes son of Jaquetus, Clemens son of Williermus, Johanneta and her sister Perrussona daughters of another Perrodus who had been murderred (fol. 27) by Johannes Morel who was now a fugitive, and Broyseta (=Brusseta) daughter of Vyonetus de Tecto.
Other sources that need to be added to the early genealogy of the de Tecto family include ACV Fn 5 (in progress), ACV Fn 8, ACV Fn 9, ACV Fn 27. Also many items still to be transcribed in P Loys and some in IB and PP 637.
His son Anthonius Cular, with his wife Johanneta, made a reconnaissance 11 nov 1382 (P Cerjat (I) B 1219) for a group of properties that had been recognized on 28 mar 1362 (P Cerjat (I) B 1190) by Roletus Cular and his wife Beatrix, strongly implying that Roletus had died by 1382, and his son Anthonius had succeeded to all of his estate.
A different Roletus, son of Perretus dictus Balma, is mentioned in Fn 5, fols. 3 and 3v (dated in 1379). Apart from these references, nothing is known about him.
In the terrier Fn 311, for the charitable hospital of Moudon, fol. 12, there is a reconnaissance or bequest from Johannes filius quondam Anthonii Cular, dated 05 jun 1430, and an additional item for an obligation "de legato quondam Johannete relicte Muriseti de Costel advuncule sue" (a legacy from the late Johanneta widow of Murisetus de Costel his aunt). Johanneta was apparently not a sister of the wife of Roletus, Beatrix daughter of Aubuertus de Costel. In order to be the aunt of Johannes, then, Johanneta would most likely be a sister of Anthonius, and that scenario is accepted here.

Some records make him the son of Perretus, but at least one concerns a Stephanus son of Petrus de Tecto. The working hypothesis is that there was one Stephanus, son of Perretus.
ACV P Loys 213, dated in 1342, concerns Stephanus de Tecto, originally from Chavannes-sur-Moudon, but now living in Moudon, a wigmaker (pellipparius), but does not name his father. P Loys 578, in 1346, makes the connection, Stephanus the wigmaker is the son of the late Perretus de Tecto. At that time, 1346, Stephanus held part of a house at Chavannes, located "en Palliere", between the houses of Clemens de Tecto and Roletus de Tecto (alias Cular), and he sold this portion to Beatris, daughter of the late Aubertus de Costel (she is named elsewhere as the wife of Roletus de Tecto alias Cular). It is not made clear in this transaction whether the adjacent "houses" were in fact separate structures, and not parts of the same house, or who held any other "parts" of the house in question.
By 1356, Stephanus was living in Romont, and had recently sold his (2/3 ?) interest in a house in Moudon to Uldriodus Marion of Chavannes (Fn 310, fol. 291v). Another transaction in Fn 310 (fols. 290) concerns the donation of the same house (or part of a house) in Moudon to the charitable hospital in 1329. These two transactions raise a number of questions. The original donation to the hospital was made by Vuilliermus dictus May de Chavanes supra Meldunum in 1329, as a pious donation, but the transaction of 1356, apparently for the same cense and the same part of the same house, says it was donated by "those of the Dutoit family" (illi de Tecto). Further complicating the story, there is a mention in Fn 313 of property held by Dominus Vuilliermus Mayo, a priest, but the dated items concerning this priest are in the 1390's, not the same Vuilliermus of 1329. However, given the flexibility of names and spellings in the 14th Century, it is likely that the Vuilliermus dictus May of 1329 was also known with spellings such as Mei, Meios, Mejoz, etc. Elsewhere in Fn 310, Vuilliermus May is noted as a resident of Chavannes in 1325, and there was still a Mejoz family there in Chavannes in 1357.
No mention of Stephanus has been found later than about 1360, and nothing is known about him in Romont or Estavayer, although the great bulk of material concerning these cities in the AEF has not been indexed in a way that would facilitate a systematic search. There is no suggestion in the material examined so far that Stephanus left descendants.
There is also a document from 1360 (P Cerjat (I) B 269), in which certain properties are held jointly by Roletus Cular, Clemens de Tecto, and with Stephanus de Tecto and his niece Jaqueta "for half of 4 sols and 1 denier", but without any explanation of whether Stephanus and his niece hold the other half, or whether some other party holds the second half. P Cerjat (I) B 270, with the same date, concerns another share of the same properties, but does not clarify the circumstances. The solution appears to be found in P Cerjat (I) B 366, dated in 1395, concerning the same properties, and specifying that they were now held a securities (in effect, a secured loan or mortgage) from Johannes Barat and his wife Jaqueta, daughter of Girardus de Botens. Thus, Jaqueta, niece of Stephanus de Tecto, must be the daughter of Brusseta de Tecto, daughter of Johannes or Johannetus de Tecto, and wife of Girardus de Botens, and from the other evidence about this Brusseta, Jaqueta would in fact be the grand-niece of Stephanus. The words used to state relationships of this type are sometimes imprecise in this linguistic tradition, and in fact the Latin neptis, which in Medieval documents generally means niece, means grand-daughter or, by extension, a female descendant, in Classical Latin. The lack of an appropriate vocabulary is apparently at the root of some vague statements of relationships in these documents.
If the discussion to this point is close to being correct, it will be necessary to give Stephanus a brother Johannes or Johannetus. It has already been inferred from other evidence that Stephanus had brothers Nicolaus and Perrodus, and that Stephanus presumably had already settled either with his father or with his brothers to take his inheritance separately. The same could have been done by other siblings, and we suppose that to be the explanation for the lack of a clear citation of a Johannes son of Perretus; he had already separated his properties from the rest of the paternal inheritance.
P Loys 578, dated 12 mar 1346 concerns the sale of a part of a house, or perhaps one of a row of three houses, at Chavanes supra Meldunum, "en Palliere", of which Clemens de Tecto, Stephanus de Tecto, and Roletus de Tecto each hold a part, that of Stephanus being between the other two. Stephanus here sells his part to Beatrix filia quondam Auberti de Costel, elsewhere identified as the wife of Roletus (Culard) de Tecto.
