Catechumen 27 apr 1771 at Bern, where his father was minister. He may well have been the C. V. Dutoit who served as chaplain of a Swiss regiment commanded by Major-General Mey and garrisoned at Mastricht as early as 1786. He was pastor at Vevey and Montreux 1796-1800, Cully 1800-1815, and later (?) at Pully and Vevey (1823 until at least 1834).

Mentioned in a document of Jean Maquelin, notary at Vevey, regarding the heirs of the late François Dutoit of Vevey, 27 feb 1629.
She is probably the Claudine Dutoit of Vevey who married at Moudon 30 apr 1636 to Spectable Jaques Tacheron.
It is not entirely out of the question that she is also the Claudaz du Tey who appears in 1627 (ACV Fo 17, fol. 39) as the widow of Noel Guedon of Vevey, representing her son Anthoine Guedon.

This would seem to be the Claude Dutoit the elder, son of the late Nicod Dutoit, who reaches an agreement with Claude son of the late Pierre Dutoit 05 oct 1511 (Michel Frossard, notary at Moudon), regarding payment of costs for the marriage of Pierre's niece Perissone Dutoit, daughter of the late Jacob Dutoit. If so, we suppose that Nicod's father Vuillerme was perhaps another brother of Jacob. The dispute about the cost of the wedding was not definitively settled at that time, however, as we find documents concerning it as late as 1538!
If he is indeed Claude the elder of that period, he was also the one who represented the Dutoit family along with Pierre son of the late Nicod Dutoit in a complaint against Jacob d'Estavayer, prothonotary of the church of St. Etienne in Moudon regarding ownership of the "disme" of Chavannes, a feudal tax that was still claimed by some of the Dutoit family two centuries later. As both Claude and Pierre were children of Nicod, it is possible that it was only the descendants of Nicod, or perhaps of his father Vuilleme, who were entitled to the proceeds of this "disme". The ultimate origin of the "disme" has not been discovered, but there are several documents over a period of almost three centuries describing its operation. By the end of the 17th Century at part of the "disme" was also owned by the Demont family of Chavannes, but the individual shares had become so diluted by the increase of the descendants that they were referred to as "particules".

Mentioned as a witness, son of Jacobus, in a reconnaissance in ACV Fn 27, fol. 20, 1459.
Documents of Jean Jaquier (or Jaqueri), notary at Moudon, 04 may 1559, mention a number of transactions between members of the Dutoit clan. Those that refer to the late Claude Dutoit, a figure of the distant past, are possibly confusing, but seem to indicate that he had a son Maurice who had died recently, a living son Claude, and a living son Jaques. If the references to Jaques son of the late Claude all refer to the same man, the one that gives the late Claude's father's name as Pierre would thus establish his parentage. However, there are better sources.
Claude's testament was recorded by Rodolphe Demont, notary at Moudon, 24 mar 1524. It names his wife Antonia, sons Maurice and Claude, and daughters as follows:
That he had two daughters named Françoise (Francesia or Francesca, in Latin) is confirmed through several sources. This situation alerts us to the possibility that Claude had two wives, and one other indication of this situation has surfaced so far, the parentage of Nicolletus, son of this Claude and Johanneta Mestraulx of Villars-le-Terroir. We show Nicolletus as a child of the first wife, leaving the others as the children of the second wife, for lack of additional information.
He is identified in the testament as the son of the late Jacobus Detecto, parish of St. Maurice of Mollens (modern Morlens). He leaves bequests to that parish as well as the religious community of St. Claire in Vevey. He asks to be buried in the tomb of his predecessors at the church of St. Maurice of Morlens.
The same Claude is probably not the Claude Dutoit of Chavannes who appears in the marriage contract of Louis de Costel alias Bellaz to Guillemette daughter of Claude Girard of Blessens. That Claude Dutoit is listed as the maternal uncle of Guillemette. However, we have not figured out whether the relationship is through that Claude or his wife (not mentioned in that document, however -- 10 apr 1524, Rodolphe Demont, notary).
In 1522, Claude appears with his son Maurice to record a settlement with Antoine Lombard of Morlens on behalf of his daughter Isabelle, "ad opus eiusdem Mauricii, videlicet de per super Defloracionem suis corporis dicte Ysabella sibi per dictum Mauricium facta..." A few months later, in January 1522/23, Maurice married Anteine, daughter of Jean Trolliet of Seigneux. (Documents of Michel Frossard, notary at Moudon).

Documents recorded by Claude de Place, notary at Lutry (ACV DI 48/7 and 48/11, date 13 may 1576 and 21 feb 1578) relate to a settlement between François DuTey and his nephew Claude DuTey regarding property at Cully of which Claude DuTey son of Antoine Dutey of Palézieux owned a half interest ("reconnaissance" of 15 may 1501, copy signed by Egrège George Ansel). The document of 1578 further reports that on 28 aug 1545, recorded by notary Henri Perriard, a "partage" was executed among the heirs of the same Claude DuTey. The heirs were Perrod du Tey of Vuarmarens, parish of Morlens, in his own name as well as in the capacity as guardian and administrators for Jean, Claude, and Jeannette, the sons and daughter of the late Claude du Tey his brother, for two thirds of the late Claude's estate, and Jean du Tey, brother of Perrod and the late Claude for the other third. The estate included property that had come to them by inheritance from "Uldriette", the mother of the three brothers, and the "partage" specified that some property went to the surviving brothers Jean and Perrod only, and not to the heirs of the late Claude. By 1576, François, heir of Perrod, held this property, and his "nephew" Claude duTey claimed that he should inherit part of it. The question was settled in favor of François when he produced the earlier documents mentioned above. Exactly how the younger Claude is related to François is not immediately clear, but the rest of this family can be reconstructed with reasonable certainty. The mention of Vuarmarens in the parish of Morlens assures us that we are in fact dealing with the Dutoit clan, but how this branch relates to the Dutoit family noted at Palézieu circa 1560 is still murky. The documents give us hope that the problem can be resolved through the "terriers" of Cully.

There are many appearances in early notarial records at Moudon, as the son of the late Claude and brother of the late Maurice Dutoit. A marriage contract recorded by Humbert Demierre 05 jan 1567 has his (Claude's) daughter Jeanne marrying François Gauly (?) the elder, which helps to establish his dates. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that this is the same Claude DuToict whose son Balthazard appears in 1576 sharing a 1/2 interest with Jaques son of the late Mauris Dutoit (cited by Jaques Richard, notary, 30 may 1599). Other documents (1599, 1602) recorded by Jaques Richard, notary at Moudon, identify Balthazard as the brother-in-law of François Gauley, and refer to a partage recorded by another notary in 1576, between Balthazard for himself and the other children of (the late) Claude Dutoit (1/2 interest), and Jaques Dutoit for himself and the other children of (the late) Maurice Dutoit (the other 1/2 interest). However, we have not yet established who Claude married, or which baptisms pertain to his children.
Somewhere among the many Claude Dutoit's, mentions of Claude son of the late Pierre in documents that also mention Maurice son of Claude are evidently referring to another man. One possibility is that the other Claude was the son of Pierre son of Nicod brother of Guy.
Among the fragmentary notarial records of Vevey, there is a section of a register belonging to Clement Butty (DS 106/113) that contains a reference on 21 apr 1593 to Thomas and Jaques Dutoit of Chavannes-sur-Moudon, tuteurs of Jeanne de Boloz. We recognize her as the Jeanne du Bouloz who married André Dutoit, son of Claude Dutoit "le jeune", in 1594. It is not entirely clear if Claude "le jeune" was still living at that date, but as André was baptised in 1569, it is clear that "Claude son of Claude" is not the same man as "Claude le jeune", whose children would have been born as early as the 1540's. And he can hardly have been "le jeune" if he was born around 1515! (It seems quite likely that Thomas and Jaques arranged the marriage with one of their close relatives in order to consolidate her estate with that of their own family, and that Claude Dutoit "le jeune", father of André Dutoit, is most likely a sibling or cousin of Thomas and Jaques.)
We see in another record of Henri Garrod, notary at Corsier, 15 dec 1574, Pierre son of the late Humbert Perrod of Chardonne in the parish of Corsier selling to Claude son of the late Claude DuThey of Chavannes sus Mouldon, vineyards at Chardonne. Thus, Claude may be one of the first of his family to branch out to the area around Vevey.
Claude son of the late Claude DuTey of Chavannes also acquired citizenship at Chesalles-sur-Moudon in 1560, though we have no evidence that he or any of his children actually lived there (document cited in the inventory of the communal archives of Chesalles-sur-Moudon, and a copy at the ACV examined by Anne Bohy).
The terriers of Moudon appear to give additional information about this Claude. By 10 jun 1593 (ACV Fn 131 fol. 3v), Claude du Tey de Vuarmarens had died, and his son Jehan du Tey made a "reconnaissance" jointly with his "beau-frère" Antoine Frossard, who had married Anne, daughter of Gervais Gervais, mercier and resident of Moudon. The text reveals that the mother of Anne Gervais was Claudaz, daughter of François Demont. Claudaz was also the mother of Jehan du Tey, making Anne the step-sister of Jehan. Anne and Jehan had inherited the property in question from their mother. The next reconnaissance (fol. 4v) concerns Egrege "Baptizard" (=Balthazard) du Tey filz de feuz Claude du Tey, but for property that he purchased from Pierre Demont. The simplest explanation for this is that Balthazard and Jehan were both sons of the same Claude du Tey, but they had different mothers. Under this hypothesis, since Claudaz Demont survived Claude du Tey, she must have been his second (or even third) wife, but whether Claude was her first or second husband is yet clear. We should be able to resolve this issue of chronology from the terriers, which contain several other mentions of Gervais Gervais. Therefore, we at first interpreted this Jean Dutoit as the son of the present Claude by his second wife Claudaz Demont.
However, the records of the notary Jaques Jaquery (Jaqueri, Jaquier) of Moudon (ACV DL 53/1 fol. 30v) suggested that we had conflated two families here. On 15 mar 1559, Claude Demont (the name of his late father is left blank) sells to Claude Duthey son of the late François Duthey of Vuarmarens, the 1/4 part of land belonging to him at Moudon dessous Sainte Catherine, which was owned jointly as follows: 1/2 to François Demont and the heirs of Pierre Demont, 1/4 to the seller, Claude Demont, and the remaining 1/4 to Bernard Demont. The heirs of Pierre Demont are evidently those listed as such on fols. 47-48 of the same register: Pierre, Benoyte, Abel, Jean, and the late Catherine who was the wife of Jean Burgade, minister at Granges. As a result of these discoveries, we are forced to separate the two families.
Given the mentions of a Claude du Tey somehow involved in this lineage in a terrier for the chateau d'Oron (Fo 17, several mentions), it appears at least one wife of this Claude Dutoit has now been identified. She was Agnes, daughter of Claude Demierre of Montet. However, the citations in this terrier do not mention any children of Agnes, and it may be that she was not the mother of the known children of this Claude du Tey. Instead, the terrier indicates that Claude and Agnes had made a previous reconnaissance, likely in the last half of the 16th Century, property that had previously been held by Pierre and Claude Demierre (perhaps brothers?), but by the present time, 1627, the property was held by the Demierres, suggesting that it had not been passed by hereditary succession to the Dutoit family. For these reasons, we show Agnes as a second wife of the present Claude, and do not place her as the mother of his known children.

There are numerous mentions of the Claude Dutoit, son of Pierre, who married Anteine Veyre. Could he be the same Claude Dutoit who was the "brother" of Nicod, Pierre, Jean, François, and Guillaume Dutoit, five brothers, who in 1568 divided property that they held jointly (ACV DL 53/2 fol. 69v ff, partage by the five brothers)? The problem is compounded by a significant discrepancy in the records concerning these five brothers. The partage of 1568 says they are sons of Nicod, and at least some records from other notaries concur, but the church records and one marriage contract say they are sons of Pierre! The fact that the five brothers owned significant property jointly, to the exclusion of their other "brother" Claude, could suggest that Claude was the son of a different wife of their father. Unfortunately, not even one wife of this Pierre (or Nicod?) seems to be named in the records of the notaries. Another interpretation is that Claude had simply died by 1568: one mention on fol. 72v of the partage says that adjacent property is held by the children of this Claude, a situation that could have arisen if had already died, but which could equally well mean that the children held property from their deceased mother or that they had inherited from someone else.
[14663] Date of contract, originally stated as 1538 but assumed to be Old Style, Rodolphe Demont, notary at Moudon.

The alias Telley or Tellay that appears in a few records concerning Claude Dutoit is taken to mean that he is the son of the Antoine Dutoit who married Françoise Telley. In the 16th Century, those aliases we have been able to fathom often derive from the maternal surname.

Still alive as late as 1555. A document of Claude Blanc, notary at Oron, notes Claude has died by 17 nov 1556 and has left children. So far, we have not been able to assign any of the various children of "the late Claude Dutoit" to this man, because there seem to have been more than one "late" Claude at that point.
However, one of the children might be the Jehan son of the late Claude Duthey who made a "reconnaissance" 22 mar 1592 for his cousin Anthoine son of Loys Duthey, bourgeois de Vevey (ACV Fn 347 fol. 76). This Jehan son of the late Claude made another reconnaissance in his own name 14 oct 1593 (fol. 91).

Under this hypothesis, since Claudaz Demont survived Claude du Tey, she must have been his second (or even third) wife, but whether Claude was her first or second husband is not yet clear. We should be able to resolve this issue of chronology from the terriers, which contain several other mentions of Gervais Gervais. Therefore, we interpreted this Jean Dutoit as the son of Claude by his second wife Claudaz Demont.
However, the records of the notary Jaques Jaquery (Jaqueri, Jaquier) of Moudon (ACV DL 53/1 fol. 30v) suggest that we had conflated two families here. As a result of these discoveries, we are forced to separate the two families. It is not clear whether this Claude Dutoit ever held property at Chavannes.
