NY Gen. & Biog. Soc. Haven MSS have Betsey Snyder b. 17 apr 1760 in Holland, d. 06 nov 1835 at Middleport, NY, m. Nathaniel Haven b. 19 oct 1766 in Hopkinton, MA and d. 08 aug 1847 at Middleport, NY (later annotation "or Williamsport"), with children Fanny Wells Haven b. 19 jun 1781, Sally Smith Haven b. 04 oct 1789, Polly Flagg Haven 07 dec 1793, Samuel Townsend Haven 18 oct 1791 (Brattleboro, VT, or Pawlet VT according to "Mrs. Crane"), Betsey Haven 09 feb 1796, Allen Haven 06 mar 1798, bringing the Uran line down to about 1903. Sources are not explicitly listed, however.

An entirely different view of this family is obtained from Windham County, VT Probate Records, Marlboro District, vol. 1 p. 42, where the following appears:

"At a Court of Probate holden in and for the District aforesaid, present the same Judge -- 1st April 1785 -- Upon Application made to the said Court by Elizabeth Snider of Brattleborough the said Elizabeth is appointed Guardian of the Person and Estate of her Daughter Fanny Snider an Infant aged about four years, until the said Fanny shall arrive at the age of fourteen years -- the said Elizabeth is bound in £20 for the faithful performance of said Trust." This is standard language for the appointment of a guardian for a minor child whose father had died. The expected next step would be for Fanny herself to select a guardian when she reached the age of 14.

Evidently, this is the same Elizabeth Snider, future wife of Nathaniel Haven, with daughter Fanny Wells Snider from an earlier marriage. Unfortunately, the probate records do not seem to contain any other references to the Snider family, nor do we find an appointment of a guardian in 1795 when Fanny had reached the age of 14. In light of this information, it becomes easier to explain the absence of Fanny in the 1790 census, where the Nathaniel Haven household in Brattleboro, Vermont lacks one female: she may have been staying with other relatives. Deeds and other records of Brattleboro, if they still exist, may help to clarify this story. One possibility that can be checked is that Mr. Snider might have died during the Revolutionary War. It is likely both were born in NH or MA, or else moved into the area from NY. Descendants of William James Uran, son of Sally Smith Haven Uran, indicate Betsey lived "at Schneider somewhere in NY before the marriage." However, this could be misinterpretation of a passage found in another version, "Betsy Snider of Schneider somewhere in New York", likely intended as "Betsy Snider OR Schnieder."

Correspondence of Louisa W. (Haven) Edgerton to Allen Clark Haven, 1868, contained in the Haven MSS collection, includes a family record listing Betsey Snider b. Holland. But a later biographical sketch of Louisa (Portrait & Biographical Album of Jackson County, Iowa, 1889) shows Elizabeth was "of German descent". It is possible from this that Louisa believed her grandmother Betsey had been born in Holland to a German family, but it is also possible that the story itself had already become extremely muddled. The source of the family record, according to Louisa's letter, was the Nathaniel Haven family bible, at that time in the possession of Louisa's aunt, Polly Flagg (Haven) Williams. No further record of the bible itself has been found. Later correspondence of Dwight Craig Haven with Polly Williams' adopted daughter, Mrs. Mary M. Compton is also preserved in the Haven MSS, and is consistent with the earlier correspondence. At least it is clear that the Uran family, as well as other descendants, understood that Betsey Snider was the wife of Nathanial Haven, and thus their ancestor.

The name Snider is almost unknown in Vermont and New Hampshire records of that period. It is possible they came from New York, where the name is common, as is suggested by the 1880 census listing for Sally (Haven) Uran, showing parents b. Vermont and New York (however, her father's birth is recorded in Hopkinton, MA, not Vermont). The name Snyder/Schneider is most common in the records of the Dutch Reformed churches of the Hudson Valley. The surviving registers of these churches have been extracted, so it may be possible to locate Fanny's baptism. It is also quite likely that she was named after one of her grandmothers or another relative, so Elizabeth's maiden name may have been Wells.

Brattleboro is in Windham Co., which was formed in 1781 from Bennington Co. If Elizabeth's husband died about the time Fanny was born, or even some months before she was born (the fact that Elizabeth was appointed guardian in 1785, however, suggests, that her husband had died more recently), probate proceedings might be found in Bennington Co. rather than Windham Co. It is also possible that he died in New York during the Revolutionary War and that his widow returned to live with relatives in Brattleboro for the duration of the hostilities. These scenarios suggest new directions for research. However, it is also the case that the court system in Vermont was still in a very rudimentary state of development at that time. The earliest records may not have survived at all.

Elizabeth Snider is also mentioned in the probate records of the Westminster District of Windham Co. She was granted a payment of £45 from the estate of Samuel Wells in January, 1795, the estate having been in probate since 27 dec 1786, after an act was passed by the General Assembly of Vermont allowing his estate to be probated in that district, even though he had died elsewhere. He was a Loyalist, and there are many sources for information on his family, though none show a daughter who could be our Elizabeth, and in any case, the payment was for her "account" (money owed to her, the circumstances not stated for her or for the vast majority of the claimants of the estate). His will was dated 28 oct 1784 with a codicil of that same date. It does not mention Elizabeth. A great many people were owed money from his estate, apparently because he was speculating in land and had entered into many transactions that were not completely paid off at the time of his death. He also was involved in commercial ventures, so many of his debts probably were business expenses. In spite of the generalized nature of the debts, the fact that her daughter's middle name was Wells suggests that Elizabeth may have been a close relative of the loyalist Samuel Wells. Samuel was also a lower-level judge in the area, as well as a member of the New York Colonial Assembly, and a supporter of the claim that New York was pursuing on territory held by Vermont. The amount of money involved suggests that Elizabeth had resources of her own. Is it possible that she made her claim against the estate in 1786, at that time still under the name Elizabeth Snider, and when the payment of her claim was finally approved, the record maintained her previous name, even though she was by now the wife of Nathaniel Haven and mother of three more children. However, no probate documents for the estate of Samuel Wells other than those in the first volume or the probate record have been located.

That there was a connection between the Wells family and other Loyalist families is well established, as this extract shows: History of the Eastern Township, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, Civil and Descriptive, (Mrs. C. M. Day, printed by John Lovell, St. Nicholas Street, 1869, East Farnham, pp. 272-273): "the warrant of survey for a tract of land lying within the district of Montreal, bounded north by Granby, east by Brome, south by Dunham and Stanbridge, and west by the seigniors, was issued August 27th, 1798. The tract was erected into a township named Farnham and granted in part to Samuel Gale, Oliver Wells, Samuel Wells, Robert Wells, Richard Wells, Micah Townsend, Ephraim Nash, Nathaniel Church, David Wells, Rueben Church, Abraham Cuyler, Cornelius Cuyler, Jacob Glen Cuyler, John Jones, James Sutherland, Alexander Schut, John Goudy jun; John Mebris, Amaziah Howe, William Mathews, William Sutherland, John Steele and Charles St. Ours. Active among the class of persons known as U.E. Loyalists was Col. Samuel Wells of Brattleborough, Vt. He was of English origin, though a native of Deerfield in the Province of Massachusetts, and removed to Brattleborough then in the Province of New Hampshire, while yet the population of those grants was very sparse. Being a person of decided character and considerable means, his position enabled him to exercise a good degree of influence so long as the authority under which he acted as judge, justice of the peace, and chief militia officer of the section, was recognized by the people; and when policy which governs the conduct of many men, would have dictated an opposite course of action, Col. Wells evinced a most uncompromising loyalty. Though strongly opposed to the popular cause, he had yet sufficient skill and influence to avert the confiscation of his property; yet it was not always possible to escape the odium attached to the name of a loyalist, or the punishments often meted out to such. Col. Wells' principles were firmly maintained till the last of his life, and the opening sentence in his will shows conclusively that his submission to the ruling powers, was absolute necessity. He never acknowledged the newly constituted government, but passed his time in retirement till after the peace, of '83 when his mortal career ended at his residence in Brattleborough, in the 55th year of his age. He died deeply insolvent, as the firmness with which he had adhered to the cause of his Royal Master during the revolutionary struggle, had subjected him to repeated and severe loses."

Is there any possibility that Betsey/Elizabeth was an unrecorded daughter of Samuel Wells? A publication under the auspices of Vermont Historical Magazine by Henry Burnham, 1880, Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont: Early History with Biographical Sketches of some of its Citizens (Brattleboro: D. Leonard) includes an account of Samuel Wells (p. 64), including the statement that he and his wife Hannah Sheldon had 13 children, of whom two died in infancy. Of the 11 who survived to adulthood, the account further notes that his (six) daughters married Samuel Gale (husband of Rebecca Wells), Ephraim Nash (husband of Hannah Wells), Micah Townsend (husband of Mary Wells, who was born 25 apr 1760, thus apparently ruling out any possiblity Betsey Snyder was her sister, unless Betsey was her twin — and besides, Mary had another sister Elizabeth, born and soon died in 1765), Jonathan Gorton, Nathaniel Church (husband of Calista Wells), and Ephraim Stimpson. Who were the wives of Jonathan Gorton and Ephraim Stimpson? There was also a Dr. Henry Wells, not related to Samuel, in early Brattleboro, but he was married to Hannah Stout in 1764, seemingly too late to have been the father of Betsey, and left the area for Montague, Massachusetts in 1781. Also in Brattleboro, but unrelated, was a Reverend William Wells, born in 1744, married in 1771. None of these provide a logical path to Betsey. Whether there are further records of the settlement of the estate of Col. Samuel Wells, such as accounts that might explain the claim of Elizabeth Snider or connect her in any way to Nathaniel Haven, has not been established. The available digitized images on FamilySearch.org have so far not yielded any information. The probate packets are gradually being digitized on FamilySearch.org but as yet not including any packets earlier than the 1880's.

There are many account of Samuel Wells and his children, but it appears his surviving sons Oliver, Robert, and Richard obtained land in Canada and removed there, taking with them any information about their descendancy. A son Samuel Jr. apparently remained in Brattleboro, his wife was Electa Sheldon, a relative of his mother. However, the Sheldon family (sheldonfamily.org) has traced their descendants. Oliver's wife was Lucy Whipple, their children recorded 1782-1795 at Brattleboro and 1798-1803 at Farnham, Canada. There seem to be no other possible sources of the name Fanny Wells in this kindred. Therefore, it seems most likely that Fanny Wells must have been associated with some other branch of the Wells family of Deerfield, MA, or else with an entirely different Wells family. The last possibility seems unlikely, as the name Townsend (Mary Wells b. 1760 married Micah Townsend, the family removed to Canada with the other Wells descendants) appears among Betsey's children by Nathaniel Haven. However, none of the brothers of Samuel Wells Sr. seem to have left descendants, and none of the Wells family recorded in George Sheldon's History of Deerfield, Massachusetts (1895-1896) leads to a likely candidate for the elusive Fanny Wells.

The guardianship might have been terminated or altered in some way after Fanny reached the age of 14, or possibly even earlier. Could there be some trace of it elsewhere? It is not certain when the Nathaniel Haven family moved from Brattleboro, but the next known records of the family are Allen J. Haven's birth in 1798 (supposed to be in Brattleboro, but no record actually found there) and Sally's marriage in Pawlet, VT in 1807. In fact, the death notice of Allen "Havens" appeared in the Oshkosh Northwestern, Friday, August 24, 1883, indicating that he died at Omro, WI on August 23, 1883, and that he was born in Essex Co., NY in March 1798 — in other words, the family may have moved to Moriah earlier than the Haven MSS indicated, although that leaves the problem of how Sally met Jonathan Uran and married in Pawlet..

[151] Haven MSS have birthplace as "Holland", LDS Ancestral File has "Germany", and Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson Co., Iowa (1889) has "of German descent". The last seems incontrovertible and is also the earliest source.

[14401] Presence of widow Elizabeth Snider and her daughter Fanny Snider in Brattleboro, 1785, suggests place and time.
