There is doubt about her children. The last, Ethel, is on the 1900 census, supposedly born May, 1897, age 13, born in Kansas, her parents born in Vermont, and indicated as a sister of the head of the household, Homer Maxwell. Assuming the year is in error due to faulty arithmetic, and her actual date of birth is 1887, we note that Minerva would have been over 57 years old at the time. Further, the same census, for 1900 (Butte, Silver Bow Co., Montana, Ward 7, ED 122), says she was the mother of five children, of whom four are living, presumably the indicated siblings living this this household (Homer, George, Albert, and Ethel). Ethel was supposed to have been born in Kansas.

Apparently, an alternate lineage has this Nathaniel marrying Abigail Rice, daughter of Jason Rice and Abigail Clark, and then producing the 2 children now attributed to this Nathaniel's father and Abigail Clark, widow of Jason Rice. This would seem to make this Nathaniel too young for marriage.

Several references to Nathaniel Haven or Havens in Dummerston, VT vicinity. His father Ebenezer was there as early as 1770 (blacksmith). A Nathaniel on tax lists of Brattleboro, possibly land owner in Jamaica, VT cir. 1785. 1790 census has a Nathaniel in Brattleboro (+ wife, 1 daughter), this noted in Haven MSS for Nathaniel #162, even though the same MSS claim that Samuel son of Nathaniel #178 and Betsey Snyder, was born in Brattleboro in 1791. Thus, confusion exists within the Haven MSS. The confusion would be resolved if Nathaniel #178 and #162 are actually the same person. The children attributed to Nathaniel #162 do not seem plausible in light of the census reading, but perhaps Nathaniel #162 had already removed from VT.
Revolutionary War pension application for Nathaniel Haven, Unadilla, Otsego Co., NY, 25 jan 1833, shows he was born in Hopkinton, MA in 1756, and served at Dummerston, VT and in the Boston area during the war. He says he remained in VT for a few years after the war, and had been in NY approximately 48 years at the time he applied. The pension file jacket gives death date but no place of death. The file contains correspondence of Dwight C. Haven, thus showing where he got some of the information in the Haven MSS.
The 1800 census of Pawlet, VT shows 2 additional males and 2 additional females. There are no other Haven/Havens in Pawlet records (vital records, church records, deeds) during this period. Haven MSS records the following children of #162: Abigail, Loma, Polly, Anne, Rachel, Phebe, Sylvanus, Ebenezer (b. 02 apr 1794, Delaware Co., NY). It is most unlikely that these are the children of #162 and widow Eunice Farr, who already had a grown son, William Farr, by the time she married Nathaniel, both because of her apparent age and because about 6 of these children should have been on the 1790 census. However, a Nathaniel with all these children has not been found on any 1790 census.
A petition of 25 dec 1781, State Papers of Vermont, vol. 5, p. 247 shows "Ebnezer Haven" and "nethanel haven" among petitioners asking that vacant land in Dummerston held by the prioprietors be made available for public sale at a fair price.
The LDS Ancestral File shows a possible solution to the problem of origins of the information about the Uran family in the Haven MSS. On the face of it, the annotations suggest that the source was a Mrs. Crane. The Ancestral File shows a Samuel T. Haven, son of Nathaniel Haven and Elizabeth Snyder, whose second daughter Mary Ann Haven b. 07 oct 1824 Moriah, Essex Co., NY, m. Samuel Newell Crane. They raised a family in Maquoketa, Jackson Co., IA, including a son Charles Delano Crane. The Mrs. Crane could therefore be either Mary Ann Haven (our Sally Haven Uran could be her aunt) or the wife of Charles Crane (our Sally Haven Uran could be her husband's great aunt). The MSS do not show clearly how much information came from Mrs. Crane, and how much from other sources. It is possible the compiler simply added information where he thought it fit, so the MSS do not necessarily reflect the understanding of the contributors. The possibility that our Haven family moved to Moriah, NY should be investigated, because the Josiah Lowell family also moved there from Pawlet, VT. The presence of a Nathaniel Haven in Moriah in 1810-1820 would be helpful, since we could probably tell from his age which of the contending Nathaniels he is. A further complication is that Nathaniel #162 must have crossed paths with the Uran family in Otsego Co., NY. Thus, BOTH of the Nathaniels have geographic connections with the Urans!

Information on the descendants of this family from Haven MSS at the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society seems to have come from a Mrs. Crane. It takes the family of Jonathan Uran and Sally Haven down to about 1903, with marriage dates but lacking most spouses' names. While the Uran family information is genuine, the identification of Sally's parents seems problematic. For example, both the 1790 and 1800 censuses would have to be in error, as they show only 1 daughter born before 1790, but 2 daughters appear in the family record, which was copied from the Nathaniel Haven family bible in 1868.
While it is clear that Nathaniel and most of his children are associated with Moriah, New York, we have no direct evidence linking this family to Clark Haven. The marriage record of Nathaniel Haven and Elizabeth Snyder has not been found. There are many other Haven families in Moriah and neighboring towns, none yet identified. Even the birth date recorded in the Haven MSS is problematic; it comes from the Nathaniel Haven family bible (copied in 1868 by Louisa Edgerton, his grand-daughter), but the record in Hopkinton, Massachusetts is a baptism, so the date cannot be matched exactly. The best evidence at this time for parentage is that one daughter was named Polly Flagg Haven, apparently after her grandmother, the wife of Clark Haven.
Regarding the problem of the origins of Elizabeth Snyder, she is mentioned at least twice in the probate records in Windham Co., Vermont, but apparently nowhere else. She is not on the 1793 tax list of Brattleboro, but her (second) husband is among those added to the "second list" dated 15 may 1793 (along with Calvin Church and several others, this district assigned to Stephen Bennet). The tax lists for 1793 are in the collections of the Brattleboro Historical Society (Joann H. Nichols, 2000, "Brattleboro, Vermont, Tax Lists 1793", Vermont Genealogy 5:145-155).
The reason for the concern about Betsey Snyder is that her daughter Fanny was born in 1781, a date supported by several independent sources, and thus Nathaniel himself was only 14 years 8 months old when Fanny was born. It does not seem likely that Nathaniel would have fathered a child before he had reached the age of 14. It seems far more likely, at least to us, that Betsey was an attractive young widow who happened to have a young daughter when she married Nathaniel, about six years her junior, around 1788. The alternative to this scenario is that there must have been two women named Betsey Snider in Brattleboro, one a widow, the other the wife of Nathaniel Haven, both of whom had a daughter Fanny born in 1781. And, as the name Snider, under any spelling, is almost unknown in this part of Vermont, the two Betsey's would have to be related by marriage if not by blood.
[153] Later notation in Haven MSS at NY Gen. & Biog. Soc. says "or Williamsport". Letter of Louisa W. Edgerton, 1868, says "summer of 1847", at Middleport.
[14401] Presence of widow Elizabeth Snider and her daughter Fanny Snider in Brattleboro, 1785, suggests place and time.

This must have been the daughter with whom Nathaniel Haven lived after leaving Moriah, NY. Polly, named after her grandmother Mary Flagg Haven. Polly had no children other than an adopted daughter, Mrs. Mary Compton, according to the Haven MSS. See account of Louisa W. Edgerton, daughter of Samuel T. Haven, in Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson Co., Iowa (1889), p. 492-493, which differs in some details from Haven MSS: Mrs. Louisa W. Edgerton is a noble representative of the pioneer women of Jackson County, who, in the early days of its settlement, encourages and aided their fathers, husbands, and brothers in their great task of developing the resources of the country, the making of a great commonwealth, and in the building up of society on firm foundations of industry, intelligence, and morality. She was one of the pioneer educators of the country, and as such deserves special mention in this Biographical Album. She is the widow of Jerome C. Edgerton, who gave up his life for his country in the late war. She is a revered resident of Maquoketa, occupying a pleasant home on West Platte street. Mrs. Edgerton was born about 1820, in Moriah, Essex Co., N. Y., where her grandfather, Nathaniel Haven, was a pioneer, having removed to that place from Brattleboro, Vt., when his son, Samuel T., father of Mrs. Edgerton, was eighteen years of age. The elder Haven bought a tract of timber land, and cleared a farm, on which he lived several years, afterward removing to Middleport, Niagara County, where he died at the home of a daughter. His wife, Elizabeth Snyder, of German descent, died on the home farm at Moriah..."
