Bible records indicate middle initial is H, but Zumwalt family record has middle name as Kindle, also used as the middle name of son Daniel. This is accepted tentatively, though it is possible someone misread H for K, and leapt to the conclusion that it stood for Kindle. Zumwalt family information from Sheila Williamson, Tacoma, WA, from various published sources. The primary sources have not been located yet.
The detailed account by her eldest daughter Nancy does not give her a middle name at all. The name Kindle or Kendall appears somewhat later in collateral lines, but there is no other suggestion of Kindle or Kendall ancestry in the Smith family.
[6047] According to funeral notice in Sacramento Bee, 21nov1896. This source lists her middle initial as "K", notes age as 85 years, 5 months, 3 days.
[14953] marriage book 3, p. 234, and marriage license book 3, dated 16jun1830. The latter source indicated name is Jacob Zumwalt, Jr. Permission dated 16jun1830 by Reuben Smith for his dau. Susannah to marry Jacob Zumwalt.

Ulysses Simpson Smith, 84, retired farmer and long time Tulare resident, died yesterday, January 21, 1951, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ellen Watkins, 515 South P Street, Tulare.
Born October 2, 1866 in Londale, McLean County, Illinois to Dr. W. T. F. and Elizabeth Ann (Anderson) Smith. Smith came west when he was 18, after completing school in Chicago. He began ranching in the Tulare area and homesteaded land between Fomosa and what is now McFarland.
Smith raised grain and horses and used to race his horses on a track belonging to his uncle, Knute Anderson.
His father was Dr. William T. F. Smith, who came to Tulare as a physician for the Southern Pacific railroad and founded Smith's college in Tulare. It later became a part of the University of Southern California.
Smith was formerly a member of the Methodist Church, which was started here by his father, and the Modern Woodmen lodge.
Surviving are five sons and five daughters. They are Harvey Smith, Lathrop; Clarence Smith, Visalia; Forest Smith, Huntington Park; Harold Smith, Manteca; Russell Smith, Bakersfield; Mrs. Eva Thomas, Visalia; Mrs. Ellen Watkins and Mrs. Hazel Stevens, Tulare; Mrs. Rosalind Osborne, Exeter, and Mrs. Edna Wiggin, Manteca. There are also 29 grandchildren. Grandchildren living in Tulare include, Gene Smith, Bob Smith, George Smith, Jim Smith, Raymond Smith, Harold Smith, Thomas Smith, Edith Ann Osborne, Ralph Watkins and Mrs. Charles Burns.
