He is no. 14 in the Burnand genealogy, which makes him the son of his father's first wife, Marguerite Wurstemberger. This is quite illogical, because the marriage of Baltazard Burnand to his second wife, Benoite Dutoit, is found at Vevey, clearly dated 1634. In fact, we have not located any contemporary source for this supposed first marriage. The Burnand genealogy says Jaques François was "secrétaire communal et baillival à Moudon", but we have not confirmed this.

He is no. 117 in the Burnand genealogy. By 1765, he was engaged in commerce in London, according to his father's testament probated in Moudon, which calls him Paul. He is assumed to be the Paul Burnand who appears in various directories of London as a financier as late as 1790. The division of his father's estate in Moudon also refers to him as Paul, living in London. He was represented on this occasion by his uncle Paul Isaac Burnand (1781). He is the founder of the English branch of the Burnand family.
Jackie Settle has pointed out an inconsistency in the evidence relating to the English branch of the Burnand family. The will of his daughter Catherine Marie clearly states that her mother was already a widow in 1809, even though the Burnand genealogy gives him a death date in 1816. This problem needs to be reviewed. Apart from this, however, there are many lines of evidence that place Jaques Olivier Paul in London and that call him Paul.

Cited as Johannes Bournens of Echallens, and dead soon after 1529, so that his son Charles was raised by his maternal grandparents at Moudon. The Burnand genealogy (Recueil des généalogies vaudoises 1:255-294, 1923) cites a "livre de famille" dating from the period 1792-1822, which gives the father of Jean as Philibert "Burnandi", of Echallens. Jean is no. 2 in this genealogy.
